Today’s free tip is in the Serie A encounter between Sampdoria and Frosinone in Genoa.

At this moment in time, Sampdoria looks good. With only one win in five games, you could be forgiven for scoffing at that comment but it’s perfectly true. Sampdoria has had hard games of late, including Juventus away, SSC Napoli away, and in-form ACF Fiorentina away, not to mention AC Milan at home. Other than at San Paolo last time out, I think Giampaolo’s men have given good accounts of themselves in each of those games but, as you’d expect, Sampdoria simply isn’t on the level of such sides.

However, if they continue to play the way they have been then beating Frosinone should not be a complication. Sampdoria has a fine blend of what it takes to win games in Serie A in the sense that they possess creative players, good goal-scorers, and a lot of hard-working individuals. I can’t say that I trust their defence completely because they don’t do a lot to inspire confidence there. When it comes to breaking teams down and finding the net, though, Sampdoria excel.

Lately, Sampdoria has added proven poacher Gabbiadini to their ranks. I think that’s a smart move for them as they’re the kind of club that likes to sign players and sell them on for profit, and Gabbiadini definitely has more to offer than he’s shown at Southampton in recent times. His arrival should give classy Quagliarella more room to drift, which is what he’s very good at, and with the skill of Defrel in the mixer too, Sampdoria should not struggle for goals. I like the energy, industry, and good passing of their midfielders, specifically Praet, Ramirez, and Linetty. They’ve also got a good controller in Ekdal, a wildly lunging “defensive” midfielder in Barreto, and good wide threats in Jankto and Saponara if required. Bluntly put, there aren’t many teams in Serie A that will be able to keep Sampdoria out, and Frosinone should not be able to prove otherwise today.

The visitors have done well since getting promoted though, all things considered. This is an extremely limited squad of players so the fact they rallied after a dismal start and picked up some decent points from October to December was impressive. However, at the very core, Frosinone is not good enough to stay up, and I’ve not seen enough good transfer activity from them last month to suggest that they can turn the tide. I can’t fault their work-rate but if they’re not scoring goals, they’re not going to win games.

Now, Sampdoria sometimes piss about in their back four, which can give Frosinone opportunities. They don’t have a clinical striker, though, no matter how impressive the potential of Pinamonti is. I don’t see anywhere near enough natural creativity in their midfield either so it’s more than just one problem that faces Frosinone. Last season, Paganini played a big role for Frosinone in terms of creativity but he’s been out all season long, which doesn’t help. I do like the cohesion and tenacity in this squad but there’s nothing else there for Serie A teams to worry about, which is why I think Sampdoria will ultimately outscore their opponents today.

To me, it makes sense to back Sampdoria to beat the -1 Asian Handicap.

Verdict: Sampdoria to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 22/25.
