Today’s free tip is in the Turkish Super Lig encounter between Trabzonspor and BB Erzurumspor.

At long last, Trabzonspor have gotten themselves a new manager – Avci. The fans of the Black Sea club have every right to be excited, too – Avci is a very good manager. As far as I am concerned, he’s proved it in both of his most recent jobs but was unlucky enough to be saddled with a very average Besiktas JK last time around, who are not known for their patience. He built something very special at Istanbul BB, and was in the process of building something at Besiktas JK when he was axed. I think Trabzonspor is a club he can succeed at, given time. He’s got the ability, and Trabzonspor are easily one of Turkey’s best teams, contrary to what the Super Lig table suggests. Let’s wait and see, shall we?

It’s even more apparent for Turkish teams than most others around the globe that a new manager ‘bounce’ takes place. It doesn’t usually matter who it is that has been appointed; the team tends to lift their game. I believe Trabzonspor will be even more motivated by the fact that it’s Avci, to be honest. They’re going to have to tighten up defensively in order to succeed under his rule, but his teams are never short of goals themselves so I believe good times are coming once again to Trabzonspor.

I know they’ve had injury problems this season but being as close to the relegation zone as they currently are is very strange for Trabzonspor. They’ve just not looked interested this season, and have deserved the poor results they’ve picked up. It’s as plain as day to see how much quality is in their squad, though. Afobe, Djaniniy, Ekuban, Omur, Flavio, Baker, and especially Nwakaeme – they all bring something different to the equation. Their defence still looks more geared up toward attacking than defending to me, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing in a very attack-minded Super Lig division. I may not trust Trabzonspor to keep clean sheets – yet – but this squad, when motivated, will outscore most Turkish teams, BB Erzurumspor included.

I think the visitors have performed admirably since being promoted back into the Super Lig. I also thought they were very astute with their pre-season signings, bringing in proven players like Donald, Gomes, and Sadiku, not that the latter has come close to showing what he’s capable of yet. Lithuanian creator Novikovas is in the best form of his life, which helps, and rapid French forward Muhammed has perfected the art of annoying opponents with his runs and tenacity, not that he’s managed to actually learn how to take his chances with any kind of regularity, and that’s me putting it very diplomatically; he’s an awful finisher.

Still, this squad works. They’ve got lots of tricky individuals, and they’re setup very well to be a threat on the break. They’ve not recorded such good results this season by chance; they’ve done it by preparing well, playing to their strengths, and taking their chances. It’s not a team I would advise you to take lightly. There’s more brawn than brains in defence but in this kind of division, that’s not always the worst of ideas. In short, I like what Ozdilek has done. I think they’re going to do well this season, BB Eruzurumspor, especially if they carry on playing as well without the ball as they have been doing.

However, let’s be realistic for just a second here. Forget the league table; they’re facing Trabzonspor away from home. This is a wounded Trabzonspor with a point to prove. There’s boatloads of quality in the Trabzonspor squad, especially in attack, and they will make their ball possession count. Yes, the visitors will have some joy with counterattacks but I’m not convinced they can score enough to avoid defeat here, not with the new manager bounce taken into account.

On paper, and in reality, backing Trabzonspor to beat BB Erzurumspor at 83/100 has to be considered good value here.

Verdict: Trabzonspor to win at 83/100.
