Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Eintracht Braunschweig and Paderborn 07.
Earlier in the season, I thought Paderborn would be prime candidates to return to the Bundesliga this season. They were relegated with a strong squad, but you wouldn’t know it from their displays. They had the whole Mamba situation going on, no designated route to goal, and they just didn’t seem to be working as hard, which I find hard to say because this is usually a seriously tenacious team. Remember that they were promoted twice in two years to reach the Bundesliga.
Whichever way you paint it, this season has not been one to remember for them. That’s why they’re now languishing midtable, accepting promotion as being impossible, and relegation being incredibly improbable. I still think it’s a good team at its very core, and that it shouldn’t take more than a signing or two to kickstart them next season, but for now this is a Paderborn team that I don’t trust. They’ve generally not done well lately, often losing mental battles, and I believe their lack of motivation is what has done that.
I watched them against Bochum last time out though, and they were good. It was like rolling the clock back to last season, you know? The energy, the timing of the runs, the speed – they had Bochum on toast for long periods of that second-half. Beating a top dog like that should really be a platform for Paderborn to build upon tonight – but I doubt it. See, teams flinging themselves at Paderborn suits them. They’re a natural counter attacking team. They’re not going to have that type of game today though, as Bochum were pushing for promotion so had to win. Do Braunschweig need to win here? I don’t think they do, actually.
A win would be beneficial for the home team, of course, and I think that they’ll get it, but the good work they’ve already done in 2021 means that they can actually afford the odd draw. As opposed to where they were at the end of 2020, they’re now very much in control of their own destiny, and full credit must go to them for turning things around. They’ve made intelligent signings, slotted them in marvellously, and now they’re picking up points regularly, In fact, I’ll go a step further than that – only top teams have beaten them in 2021. You know, the ones that were pushing for promotion, or the ones with superior attacks. Nobody else has actually beaten them in this calendar year.
With Behrendt at the back, they look a lot more solid. With Ji up front, they now have a far greater attacking impetus. Kobylanski has discovered some form, and Nikolaou is back today too. Even Abdullahi got on the scoresheet last time out in their dominant 4-0 win against fellow strugglers Osnabruck. They’ve looked incredibly organised and mature, Braunschweig, not to mention measured. They’ve gone from being rubbing rags to controlling games – and that kind of team should not lose at home against Paderborn, to be frank.
Only three teams have scored against Braunschweig at home in 2021, which should tell you how much they’ve improved. I think they’ll take great delight in this fixture – not because Paderborn are crap, but because the adventurous nature of their opponents should play right into their hands on a bumpy pitch. Therefore, despite the visitors correctly being priced as favourites, I believe there’s value to be found in backing the home team with draw no bet cover as they’ve got the patience and tactical acumen to win it; Paderborn need chaos too much.
Verdict: Eintracht Braunschweig to win with draw no bet at evens.
