Today’s featured game is the UEFA Europa Conference encounter between HB Torshavn and Buducnost Podgorica.

Mere words alone cannot express how much HB Torshavn disappointed me in the UEFA Champions League this season. Going out against Andorran minnows Inter Club d’Escaldes is one thing, but to do it as they did – wow. I watched that game because I’m a weirdo, and I was waiting for the floodgates to open (as the Andorrans had already scored and sat back) but it never happened. All I saw were a lot of hopeful long balls tossed forward aimlessly, and the Faroese heavyweights barely registered a shot on target in the second-half of that game, let alone find an equaliser. Indeed, I’d argue that they came closer to conceding another on the break than they did to scoring.

So why back them tonight? Well, I will say this much; losing against the Andorran team cost their manager his job, and he was replaced with Germany’s Schindler. He knows the Betrideildin inside out, and although they’ve been on something of a Covid-19 hiatus in the Faroe Islands, the one game he’s managed them for ended 6-0 in their favour against B68 Toftir. He’s in charge of the best team in the country, for clarity. I find it hard to imagine that he can’t make them tick, in other words, and I sure as hell don’t see how he could do a worse job than his predecessor, who was in charge for no more than two months’ worth of football.

I genuinely regard this as the best HB Torshavn team I’ve seen, which is what disappointed me the most about their defeat against Inter Club d’Escaldes. I wanted to know what their limitations were moving forward, not to see them fall against a team that they’re better than! Dahl is a good goal-scorer, Radosavljevic and Przybylski are the stars of the future for them, Justinussen is still an absolute phenomenon, and there’s both quality and experience throughout this squad. I have to believe that this team, now playing at home, will at least draw this game, if not win it.

I also think that they’ve struck gold with who they’ve been paired with because Montenegrin football is in a really bad place at the moment. Buducnost Podgorica were as bad as I’ve ever seen over two legs against HJK of Finland; it wasn’t a mere one-off. Alright, HJK had the better squad but Buducnost Podgorica got everything wrong. I don’t cover Montenegrin football but if they’re the best that Montenegro has to offer – and the league table of last season implies that – then it’s a really sad indictment of Montenegrin football as a whole. They could barely string two passes together, had no clue how to defend, and offered nothing but hopeful punts forward as forms of attacking. HB Torshavn can deal with that, especially at home in a country which arguably has more home geographical advantages than any other in Europe.

For me, the home win with draw no bet is worth taking here.

Verdict: HB Torshavn to win with draw no bet at 53/50.
