What is the A Lyga?
A Lyga in English literally means The A League, as the name suggests this is the premier league in Lithuanian football. The season usually gets underway in late March or early April, because of the harsh climate there are no games in the winter months.
The A Lyga has a unique format. Top 6 teams go into “Championship Group” and the bottom team gets relegated. The team that finished 7th then competes in relegation/promotion play-off from division below.
The format frequently changes in Lithuania due to severe financial issues for numerous clubs – basically put, at least one club is declared insolvent on an annual basis. Obviously this isn’t great for the sport!
