What is it the Coupe de la Ligue?

Known in English speaking countries as the French League Cup, the Coupe de la Ligue is a yearly knockout competition between the top 42 French football teams.

Founded in 1994, the Coupe de la Ligue differs from the Coupe de France in that it includes only professional clubs from the country’s top three divisions – as opposed to both professional and amateur sides from any French territory.

The winner of the competition is granted entry into the UEFA Europa League, but the competition is not taken quite as seriously as the much larger Coupe de France, much like the League Cup’s relationship with the FA Cup.

The competition has, much like Ligue 1, been dominated by Paris Saint-Germain in recent years. The Parisian giants have won the last three consecutive Coupe de la Ligue trophies and have won an unrivalled six since the birth of the competition.

Why we love it the Coupe de la Ligue

The lack of tradition and amateur teams in the cup means it’s less exciting than France’s premier cup competition. Outside of the top clubs, though, most teams are capable of beating one another so keep bets light.

The 2016/17 Ligue 1 campaign proved more competitive than most expected, with Monaco and Nice challenging PSG for the title. Let’s hope this competitiveness can translate to the Coupe de la Ligue to break the monotony of a vice-like Parisian grip on the trophy.
