DFB Pokal?

The DFB-Pokal is Germany’s second most important footballing competition after the Bundesliga. The 64-team knockout cup is over 80 years old, and features both professional German sides and amateur teams.

The winner of the competition was, until 1999, awarded entry into the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Since it was disbanded, the winner is now granted entry into the UEFA Europa League. When the winner and runner up also qualify through the Bundesliga, the next best placed Bundesliga side without Europa League qualification is granted entry.

Unlike the FA Cup, for example, the DFB-Pokal is seeded so that every professional team faces an amateur team in the first round, with the amateur team traditionally playing at home.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich have historically been by far the most dominant team in the competition. With 18 titles, they have three times that of second-placed Werder Bremen, a superiority reflected in their league performances.

Why we love it the DFB Pokal

The DFB Pokal is a very attack-minded cup, often producing end-to-end games with plenty of goals that are more than value for money.

From 1974 onwards, the cup has included  semi-professional and amateur German teams, leading to some interesting match ups and the occasional huge shock. Hamburger SV’s loss to VfB Eppingen in 1974 was the first time a Bundesliga side had been knocked out by an amateur opponent, in a tie that is often called the “mother of all cup sensations”.

Top teams, hugely imbalanced match ups, giant killings – the DFB Pokal has all the excitement of the FA Cup.
