What is the Russian Cup?

The Russian Cup is the top cup competition in Russia, a 97-team knockout made up of both professional and amateur sides.

All ties are one-legged, and the final takes place in May, traditionally in Moscow but more recently dotted around the country. CSKA Moscow are the competition’s most successful side, with seven titles, closely followed by local rival Lokomotiv Moscow who hold six.

The final is ordinarily tense, with eight since the turn of the century seeing only one goal or fewer in normal time.

Why we love the Russian Cup

Though only one side from Russia’s second division – Terek Grozny – has ever won the trophy, the cup is relatively competitive, with only CSKA Moscow managing to win back to back competitions since the turn of the century.

Travel time in Russian competitions is, of course, a big factor given the country’s size. The weather is also something to consider, with conditions often difficult which suits the smaller clubs.

As with the Russian league, the cup is a tactical affair, and Russian football more widely is on the cusp of either becoming interesting or remaining relatively droll.
