Schweizer Pokal?
The Schweizer Pokal – known elsewhere as the Swiss Cup – is Switzerland’s primary domestic cup competition, featuring 64 teams both amateur and professional from across the country.
Grasshopper have been by far the competition’s most successful side, a dominance reflected in the Super League performance over the years. The Zürich side boast 19 trophies and 13 runners-up medals, with FC Sion and FC Basel trailing with 13 and 11 respectively. FC Sion, interestingly, have won every Swiss Cup final they have appeared in.
The cup was founded in 1925, and the winner is permitted entry into the following season’s Europa League.
Why we love it
Swiss football is generally entertaining to watch. Teams love to attack and there is a proud tradition in the country of prioritising dazzling attacking displays over solid defending, which makes for good viewing.
The games are generally good-natured, with few aggressive encounters each season, and goals are common with high-scoring games from the first round to the final.
Four different teams have lifted the cup in the past five seasons, and Basel’s dominance in the league hasn’t quite been replicated in what is a less predictable competition.
