What is Veikkausliiga?
The Finnish Veikkausliiga (we can’t pronounce it either) is the top tier of Finnish league football, featuring the country’s top 12 sides. The league in its current incarnation was founded in 1990, but Finland’s footballing history stretches back to the beginning of the 20th century.
As the highest of eight tiers of Finnish football, the league operates on a system of promotion and relegation to the Ykkonen (division one).
Between 2009 and 2014 the competition was dominated by Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi – HJK for short – who are considered the nation’s biggest club. With a stadium of 10,770 seats, HJK’s position gives you some idea as to the relatively modest size of football in the Scandinavian country.
In the early years of Finnish football – 1908 to 1930 – the competition was played in a cup format.
Interestingly, though the bootom of the Veikkausliiga is demoted to the Ykkonen, the eleventh-placed side enters into a two-leg play-off with the runner-up of the second tier for a spot in the top flight the following season.

Why we love the Veikkausliiga
Finnish football has become far more competitive in recent years. Following the utter domination of HJK, the 2015 Veikkausliiga was hotly contested between three sides – SJK, RoPS and HJK – with just two points separating first and third.
The 2016 campaign finished with a gap of just four points between first and third, and the lack of runaway winners looks set to continue. Anyone can beat anyone at this level, so full time results are difficult to predict.
The play-off game between the eleventh-placed Veikkausliiga side and the second-placed Ykonnen side is always an exciting affair too, given what’s at stake.
