General Information

We aim to give you the best possible information before each game. However, the moment the game starts, anything can happen, ranging from red cards to snow storms to pitch invasions. We can only prepare you for so much; it's up to you to learn how to develop yourself as to know when to jump ship if things aren't going as they should.

Pay attention to the odds provided for each tip. Be aware that the longer the odds are, the less chance there is of it coming in. Don't lean toward backing the bankers containing teams you've heard of or selections at longer odds because you trust the team more or if you see the pound signs flashing before your eyes. Sometimes bankers won't win, try to use the previews to steer you toward the right selection to make rather than taking the quick/lazy way.

Please understand that every single tip has the capacity to win, push, or lose. We aim to find good value bets (probability vs odds) as our focal area.

Sporting Braga vs Torreense

KO: (UK time)

Even with rotation, I can’t see beyond a home for Sporting Braga against part-timers Torreense today. Don’t expect a massacre, though – teams in Portugal seldom take this competition seriously until the end.

Verdict: Sporting Braga to win at 4/25.

Manchester City vs Brighton & Hove Albion

KO: (UK time)

Manchester City are playing very well at the moment. They may not have scored at the time, but their first-half against my beloved Manchester United was the best I’ve seen them play this season; spellbinding at times. They’re easing into their groove at the moment, Manchester City, and hosting an out-of-form Brighton & Hove Albion side bereft of some seriously important players should only result in one outcome tonight.

Verdict: Manchester City to win at 7/50.

Featured game

Holstein Kiel vs Bayern Munich

KO: (UK time)

Something is really starting to alarm me about Bayern Munich. I still class them as the best team in the world but they’re not playing like it, and they haven’t been for a good month or so now.

Could it be fatigue? Possibly. I mean, they’ve played more games than most because of the happenings of 2020, and it’s not a particularly young starting eleven that they have. Something is starting to feel very rotten at the core though, and not only do I not like it, but it makes me uneasy too. They’re still winning games, for the most part, and that’s what counts at the end of the day. They’re not playing well though, which is really strange to see.

What I saw from them against Mainz 05 was terrifying though. Anyone who didn’t see that game could be forgiven for thinking that they just had a sleepy first-half, and woke up in the second-half. Actually, the reality was that Mainz 05 not only went in 2-0 up at the break, but they should have been three up straight after the break. Indeed, you could argue that they should have bagged four in the first-half as Bayern Munich were carved open. Bayern Munich bounced back, and again, it probably looks very impressive but against a team with a shit defence that were without their best defender – Niakhate – that’s the amount of goals they should have scored before Mainz 05 scored. I still thought they rode their luck in that game, Bayern Munich. It was not a polished display, and they didn’t have Mainz 05 hemmed in at any stage. I toyed with opposing them in their last game too, but opted not to – and Borussia Moenchengladbach beat them. They can’t complain; this has been coming for weeks now.

Some Bayern Munich fans have pointed the finger at boss Flick for fielding Alaba and Boateng in the middle of defence, saying that it cannot work, and hasn’t ever worked. I can understand that; Alaba is still a full-back, and Boateng has some serious errors in him. That doesn’t explain why they’re not controlling games though. The Bayern Munich of old would grind on teams until they submitted; this one seems more intent on letting games ride at whatever pace happens to be around. Subsequently, what’s left is a team that isn’t stopping teams from getting at them, and is seldom stopping them from scoring too. I think it’s likely that Bayern Munich will rotate their squad tonight, given that it’s a DFB Pokal encounter, and anyone expecting an easy home game against SC Freiburg at weekend needs to wake up and smell the coffee. No, I expect rotation here ahead of the harder weekend game, and that affords their hosts a chance tonight.

I still think Bayern Munich will do enough to beat Holstein Kiel. I mean, I may not be happy with certain things they’re doing but if they can score five goals without really playing well, opponents should be terrified of them. That’s the beauty of the Bavarians; they really are fucking deadly when they want to be. It’s just something that has crept into their game lately that bothers me though, because there are no signs of it getting better. In fact, I would say that it’s getting worse. Only slightly, but it’s enough to not trust them to win games that they really should win – like tonight’s trip to northern Germany.

Holstein Kiel are having a lot of fun in the Bundesliga 2 this season too. Any Holstein Kiel fan will tell you that it’s never destined to last though. The team is a bit too inconsistent in general, no matter how hard they work. What astounds me about this team is that they’ve reinvented themselves as an all-round team this season. Instead of being the insane attacking team they’ve been known for at this level for a few years now, they’ve become a team that wins by being smart – at both ends of the pitch. They’re still good in attack, and they’ve just gotten that bit better at annoying teams.

I will seldom call any Bundesliga 2 team ‘good’ at defending because not many of them even try to be. Holstein Kiel are the closest to that accolade that they’ve ever been though. What Werner wizardry it is, though! I mean, Ignjovski is seldom fit, and is still a holding midfielder in my eyes. Van den Bergh spends most of his time on the left wing too. It’s truly remarkable. Their attack will always be the danger zone of Holstein Kiel though. Serra has come on well over the past couple of years, Jae-sung has been a revelation, Muhling has been on fire this season, and the addition of Bartels was always going to be a good one. This team is as tenacious as it is confident too, which makes them very annoying for teams to face.

Now, it goes without saying that Bayern Munich are the better team here, and if they failed to progress from this DFB Pokal encounter, it would be a big shock. However, I think that they’ll rotate, and their performances of late have left me cold so I sense an opportunity for Holstein Kiel to cause problems, even if they do go out. Therefore, I’m going to back both teams to score at evens.

Verdict: Both teams to score at evens.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Olympique de Marseille

KO: (UK time)

With Covid-19 having pretty much forced the French FA to play this Super Cup final in a logical location, I think we may see a more ‘normal’ encounter than the usual tripe we bear witness to, which is generally played in boiling hot locations for the sake of extra money. This game will be played at the Bollaert-Delelis in Lens, and the French FA have even ensured that its residents, Racing Club Lens, are away for the next couple of matches as to not have any complaints about the state of the pitch. Clever buggers!

Now, my sole prerequisite for this tip is that Neymar does not start. He’s been named in the squad but, after his injury, I’m hoping he won’t be fit enough to start. I’ve had enough of the Brazilian now, you see. Still a wonderfully gifted footballer, but one that contributes nothing to this team now. It could be a case of him not wanting to play for Tuchel, or having had enough of being in Paris, but whatever the case may be, he’s been more of a hindrance than a help this season. Having all the tricks in the world aren’t of any use if you have to force them out, you know? He doesn’t provide many assists, he doesn’t score many goals, and he even looks less confident in front of goal now. I genuinely don’t know what his role actually is any longer. That could change under Pochettino but until I see proof of it, I want him out of this squad because he just slows everything down and is wholly predictable.

I much prefer the likes of Kean. It makes me laugh to remember when Everton signed him from Juventus, where he played (and impressed!) as a striker, before playing him on the wing. Paris Saint-Germain have since brought him in, and got a lot out of him after including him as part of an attacking trident. He’s looked marvellous, and has honestly embarrassed Neymar with his work ethic and desire to be on the same page as his teammates. With him, Icardi (who returned from injury in the 3-0 win against Stade Brestois), and world-class Mbappe, I think Paris Saint-Germain have a lethal attack – and far more unpredictable plus harder to defend than with Neymar.

On top of that, there’s di Maria to consider. He’s a brilliant player but only when it suits him as he’s a very petulant son of a bitch. Still, there’s little that Argentinians like more than other Argentinians so I think that Pochettino’s arrival will do him some good too. I’m not so sure about Paredes; I’m really not convinced he’s good enough for this level. Still, anything can happen. I think Pochettino will improve the speed of this team; not necessarily in terms of athleticism, but in terms of how quickly they move the ball, and that’s paramount to succeeding with this lazy team. If he can do that, they’ll finally start looking good again.

Perhaps it’s a shade adventurous of me to expect them to manage such tonight, but I am happy to take the risk. You all know Pochettino is a good manager, and you all know how good the Paris Saint-Germain squad is. There are a few weak areas but they can outscore any team in the country on their day. I’d like to think that they’d all want to impress him at the moment too, so with the proviso that Neymar sits on the bench, and there aren’t any bust-ups that result in lots of unnecessary red cards, I anticipate a convincing Paris Saint-Germain display tonight.

Of course, I’ve only been encouraged to back such by their bitter rivals, Olympique de Marseille, who are Ligue 1’s answer to the cringe emote. A massive club, they remain, but a good team, they are not. The only time they look half-decent is when they break play up in midfield and counter at speed because aside from that, they look poor. Really poor, actually, and incapable of keeping teams out, at least of their own making. I just heard that they’re planning to loan Dutch midfielder Strootman to Genoa too, so he’s unlikely to feature tonight. Good call, Olympique de Marseille – cut loose one of your best and most hard-working midfielders!

Still, all will be well because they’ve brought in attack-minded Spanish full-back Lirola – right? Hmm. I think they needed a goal-scorer, at least one more flair player, and a defensive commander more than they needed a full-back but there we go. It wouldn’t be Olympique de Marseille if they made sense! I think that this is a really poor representation of what was once France’s most respected football clubs. They’re incredibly predictable in the final third – barring the brilliant Thauvin, of course – and it’ll take more than a decent Payet display against Montpellier HSC to convince me otherwise. I see a mentally frail team that offer little by way of natural understanding, and certainly lacks any kind of cohesion or structure to contain teams.

Now, Olympique de Marseille might have gotten some joy against the Paris Saint-Germain side seen for the majority of the past couple of years, and indeed, they did beat them 1-0 when the two teams last met. This is different, though – it’s a Pochettino team now. The transformation is not complete; far from it. However, the early signs are encouraging in an attacking perspective, and if they can put their bitter rivals on the back foot early enough in Lens, I think they’ll be comfortable.

I’m taking a risk here, folks, but backing Paris Saint-Germain to beat this predictable Olympique de Marseille side by two goals or more at 27/25 appeals to me.

Verdict: Paris Saint-Germain to beat the -1.5 Asian Handicap at 27/25.

Remaining thoughts

Note

The "remaining thoughts" section is there to be a rough guide in case you want to get involved in games we haven't tipped. It is not there to tell anybody to back specific scorelines, or to guarantee that "2-2" games will go over 2.5 goals, for example. Ian lists what he believes to be the most likely outcome, and this is based on his assessment as to which way each game will develop. However, a "remaining thoughts" game listed with a 2-2 scoreline may have only just edged out a 0-0 scoreline in terms of probability because each game can develop in different ways.
