Euro 2020 Golden Boot Dark Horses

After gruelling domestic league campaigns taking place throughout Europe this season, there are plenty of online tipsters and football experts who are anticipating odds upsets galore this summer at the delayed Euro 2020. This applies not only to the question of which teams will escape the group phases, but also to the players who have their sights set on breaking into the top of the odds lines for the Golden Boot race. Here we go in search of the dark horses with an eye for goal who will be out to stun the continent’s more established names at the European Championships.

Antoine Griezmann – France

Despite having won almost everything there is to win in the game, Antoine Griezmann has had to get used to playing second fiddle to the phenomenon that is Kylian Mbappé.

Having struggled to avoid niggles and injuries for Barcelona this season, Griezmann has returned to something resembling his best form, even if it was too late to rescue Barca’s ailing La Liga push.

However, with a midfield that will provide him goal scoring chances on a plate, as well as a foil such as Mbappé, and it is easy to see how Griezmann could emerge as an early front runner for the Golden Boot award.

Burak Yılmaz – Turkey

Ligue 1 has been one of the most competitive top flights in Europe this season with four teams all locked in battle at the top of the table.

Against all the odds, Lille have been the side leading the way, thanks in large part to their talismanic Turkish striker Burak Yılmaz. If Turkey can make it out of Group A, then Yılmaz will be sure to have notched the majority of their goals.

Moise Kean – Italy

When the PSG squad suffered injuries at the start of their Ligue 1 campaign, this young Italian striker rose to the challenge to notch goal after goal.

Although he played a reduced role towards the backend of the season, Kean could be the driving force behind Italy escaping a weak Group A.

Mason Mount – England

Picking a midfielder for the Golden Boot is always something of a punt, but the way Mason Mount has been threatening goals all season for Chelsea shows that he could be a real menace at this summer’s tournament.

He could well be worth a small bet to notch a hatful of goals with his marauding runs from midfield.
