Today’s free tip is in the Swiss Super League encounter between Lausanne Sport and Lugano.

I’m a bit funny with backing a team to win the exact same match twice in a row. I just feel like there won’t be any ‘surprises’ left, if that makes sense. However, with odds off 11/10 available on draw no bet cover, I’ll take my chances because despite Lugano’s struggles, I really don’t see why they’d lose in Lausanne tonight.

As mentioned above, Lugano do have issues. Simply put, they’ve played too many games this season, and they don’t have a big enough squad to cope with such, especially not having already lost Valenzuela for a long time. Mahou has only just come back after a long time out, Aliseda will be out for a while to come (apparently), and the likes of Cimignani, Bottani, and Mai have all picked up knocks on a somewhat regular basis this season. It’s been tough for Croci-Torti to not only navigate an unfamiliar European group stage but also get his team prepared for each match despite having constant personnel issues to overcome. Now he’s got issues with the likes of Celar being out of form, and Sabbatini not being young enough to play as often as he has been.

Underneath it all though, Lugano remain a top four team in Switzerland – of that there can be no debate. Tactically, they’re superb. They’re capable of sitting back, soaking up, and countering, or playing good free-flowing football on the front foot. They’re just not used to being a team that things are expected of, if that makes sense, so there’s the pressure side of things as well as having a big enough squad that has tested them this season. Still, the stadium changes and money behind the scenes will have them ready in the years to come; of that I am certain. For now, they’re not as reliable as they normally would be, and I recognise that.

Nevertheless, it’s yet another fine time to face Lausanne Sport, home or away. Giger was sent off in their meeting earlier this week so Lausanne Sport now find themselves without a recognisable right-back. A report in Switzerland also suggests that the vast majority of Lausanne Sport’s backup players are now injured, which would leave them unable to rotate, and thus give Lugano a distinct fitness advantage. Lugano should control this game either way, really – Lausanne Sport only know how to sit and counter, and I don’t see Lugano allowing them to do that. For me, it should be more about how much damage that Steffen wants to do, and I doubt he’ll be in the most charitable of moods, having watched his beloved FC Basel get pumped by Lausanne Sport 3-0 last weekend. Lugano may have the problems I’ve listed above but they’re still got a greater capacity to rotate than their hosts, and have better individuals too. Again, I just can’t see why they’d lose – and they should really nick it.

No, I don’t expect another 4-0 hammering here. I also don’t expect Lausanne Sport to be down to ten men after two minutes this time (although I wouldn’t complain if it did happen). I also don’t think that the weather will be quite as testing. Still, the harsh reality for Lausanne Sport is that they do need to rotate but they can’t; they have the least depth available in the division, at least when it comes to quality. You all saw what happened to them at the start of the season when they lost one important player – they fell to pieces! The same pattern has continued throughout their campaign so any absentees will hit them hard, which is why they were so glad to have Sanches back midweek.

Still, Lausanne Sport are out of surprises now; everybody in Switzerland knows what they’re about. The only surprise they’ve sprung in recent times was their third kit in the midweek Schweizer Pokal which they did not announce/publicise in any way; their players just trotted out with it on. I’m not really sure that the desired effect was there, not after Giger’s wild challenge saw him dismissed early on, but it at least reminded their fans that they’re not always predictable. I can’t deny that Lausanne Sport are good at home though; they tend to make more of those games in their battle against Super League relegation. I don’t recall opposing them at home this season actually, although that could just be my memory going. It’s not a fixture that any Swiss team should take lightly because they are annoying to beat.

Three games in a week, though? That’s a tall order for Lausanne Sport. I don’t think they can handle it, at least not as well as their opponents tonight. They’ve no right-back (presumably Suzuki will fill in there), they can’t rotate, and they only have one way of playing. If you let them counter then yes, Diabate, Sene, and Kalu will cause problems. If you don’t, then they’re sitting ducks because they’ve nothing else to offer. I respect them but the timing of this fixture is not in their favour. Therefore, I fancy Lugano to pick up another away win in Lausanne, although again I wouldn’t take it without draw no bet cover – neither side are on fire right now, and Lugano are definitely without striker Celar, and possibly Vladi too.

Verdict: Lugano to win with draw no bet at 11/10.
