Are Barca Favourites for Next Season’s La Liga?

Barcelona is always one of the heavyweights of not just Spanish football but European games too. With recent changes to the team, does this mean that they won’t be favourites in the coming year? Let’s take a closer look at what we can expect.

Lionel Messi’s Departure

One of the biggest factors that might affect the performance of Barcelona in the future is the departure of their star player Lionel Messi. The Argentinian is one of the best players in the world and he was a key part of the line-up at Barca for many years.

His decision to leave was a shock to many, and resulted in many other teams jostling for the chance to pick him up. Big English Premier League teams like Chelsea were attempting to make offers for him, but he ultimately went to PSG. Should PSG and Barca meet in any future European fixtures, it will no doubt result in quite the clash.

When it comes to the Spanish team, there is no denying that their heart and soul has vanished. Though the team has many other top players who will continue to deliver stellar results for them throughout the season and beyond, there is no denying that the presence of Lionel Messi will be missed.

The Threat of the Super League

A big factor that will hang over Barca in this season’s La Liga will be their insistence in staying in the Super League. This is a decision that was condemned by fans everywhere and resulted in many of the teams who were initially signed up to instead trying to withdraw.

An Analogy to Poker

The model might seem interesting but it simply doesn’t work. Just imagine if we sat down to watch the same players trying games at a site like GGPoker at ggpoker.co.uk? Even though we can regularly see the same players in the finals of the Grand Slams, the journeys there can often be full of twists and turns. For this reason, the threat of the Super League is something that could affect Barca in this coming La Liga – not through the players but through the fans themselves.

Other Teams

Of course, one also has to consider the other teams that Barcelona will have to face in the coming season. Though Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have both lost key players too, they are in a great position to take on Barca. The rivalry between the three is well-documented and should result in some great plays as the season plays out.

One can never discount the other Spanish teams too. Sevilla, Villarreal, and Real Sociedad are also fantastic contenders who might be able to deliver a surprising result that unseats one of the top three. It is not the first time that such a result has happened, and it would certainly shake up La Liga a little. With Messi now gone from Barca, there is a chance that they will not be able to perform as they once did. This could leave the door open for one of the other teams in Spain to claim the title.

Barcelona is still a powerhouse of European football, and we can definitely expect them to do well come the new season. Will they continue to perform to the level that they have done so when Messi was on their team? That remains to be seen. What we might see, however, is a more closely fought La Liga than we have seen in previous years. Whether you consider yourself a fan of Barcelona or not, if you follow La Liga you should keep your eyes on their progress.
