What is the Europa League?
The Europa League might be secondary to the illustrious Champions League, but it’s by no means a throwaway competition.
Those eliminated from the Champions League early and those that marginally fail to qualify during their domestic seasons are put into a 48-team group stage (following preliminary qualification rounds).
The 32-team knockout phase includes eight third-placed teams from the Champions League’s group stage, a system which means some very strong sides are often drafted into the competition for the knockout rounds.
The winner of the competition is granted entry into the following season’s Champions League. For teams competing in hyper-competitive domestic leagues, or leagues in which the top two or three are almost predetermined, Europa League success offers an alternative route into Europe’s most prestigious competition.

Why we love the Europa League
The strength of the top European leagues means that, despite not qualifying for the Champions League, teams in the competition are remarkably strong.
The likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool have all represented the Premier League at the competition in recent years and, though not all big sides actually want to be in the competition, winning it is profitable.
The latter stages are particularly entertaining. Despite Sevilla winning the competition three years in a row from the 2012-13 campaign to the 2015-16 season, the number of realistic potential winners is far higher than that of the Champions League or many European domestic leagues.
