Remembering some of the biggest moments of the 2023/24 Premier League season

The start of the new football season brings fresh optimism for fans around the country. Whether you are a die-hard fan or looking to make a first bet on Premier League football, the 2024/25 campaign is just around the corner, as Manchester City look to lift the title for the fifth year in a row.

Indeed, the battle for the title is split between Pep Guardiola’s men and Arsenal, with the Gunners running City close last time out but narrowly falling short at the final few hurdles.

Last season was a rollercoaster of emotion at both ends of the table, with Sheffield United, Burnley, and plucky underdogs Luton Town ultimately relegated to the Championship despite some valiant efforts to survive.

As we prepare for the new season, let’s reflect on 2023/24 and look at some of the best moments from an entertaining nine months.

Garnacho’s bicycle kick

While Manchester United suffered their worst league finish in Premier League history in eighth, there were some enjoyable moments for the Red Devils, namely Alejandro Garnacho’s bicycle kick goal away to Everton in November.

The Argentia international’s acrobatics won the Goal of the Season award as United cruised to a 3-0 victory at Goodison Park, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial sealing all three points. Even the wet Merseyside weather couldn’t dampen the away end’s spirits after such a fantastic goal.

Tottenham’s chaotic capitulation against Chelsea

For the first few weeks of the season, it looked as if Tottenham Hotspur could be a genuine title contender. Ange Postecoglou’s first few weeks in England were defined by plenty of goals and some entertaining wins as Spurs shot to the top of the table. However, injuries and red cards ultimately derailed their campaign, with a 4-1 loss at home to Chelsea a catalyst for disaster.

The game perfectly encapsulated ‘Ange ball’. Even with nine men on the pitch, Spurs were relentless in their pursuit of attacking Chelsea, who were unlucky not to score more in a game that saw five goals ruled out due to VAR decisions.

Neal Maupay’s darts celebration

The Premier League has had a number of pantomime villains over the years, with Brentford’s Neal Maupay renowned for winding opposition players with his antics.

The Frenchman opened the scoring for the Bees away to Tottenham in January and proceeded to mimic James Maddison’s darts celebration alongside Ivan Toney.

Maddison was unhappy with Maupay – the two later clashing and exchanging blows via social media, with Spurs ultimately coming from behind to win 3-2 on the night.

Glasner gets the Eagles soaring

When Roy Hodgson was sacked as Crystal Palace manager in February, the Eagles fans must have been relieved to see some fresh ideas from new boss Oliver Glasner. However, few could have expected the Austrian to hit the ground running like he did.

Suddenly, Palace became a free-scoring machine, with critical cogs like Michael Olise, Ebere Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta – who went on a remarkable goalscoring run to finish on 16 strikes – helping the south London outfit finish in the top half of the table.

Selhurst Park had always been a fortress, but away from home, Palace were equally as ruthless, with a winning streak that saw them beat the likes of West Ham United, Liverpool, Manchester United, and hammer Aston Villa 5-0 on the final day of the season.

They will certainly be a side to watch this season, even with the departure of Olise, who joined Bayern Munich for £50 million.
