Today’s free tip is in the Swiss Super League derby between Lausanne Sport and Servette.
Derby or not, I can only see one winner here. Lausanne Sport have improved slightly in recent times but they’re a long way short of the required level of a Super League team, at least on the pitch. Casanova was a poor appointment, and it’s showing. I mean, Borenovic may have made errors whilst in charge but he learnt and fixed them. He got sacked for that. Casanova is not learning from any of his mistakes, and he doesn’t know Swiss football – but he still has a job? It’s time for Lausanne Sport to start accepting that relegation is a mere formality now, and to get a new manager in that will prepare them for a promotion push next season.
For now, they’re left without a defence and without any kind of attack. Grippo and Kone are still injured, who are their best two centre-backs by a long way. They don’t seem to want to play Pollero, their only natural striker in the continued absence of Turkes, and instead field Amdouni and Spielmann in some way or another, both of which are inside forwards – not strikers. Subsequently, the only way this team truly hurts teams is if they’re allowed to counter – and even then they’re not clinical. Servette have some daft moments at the back, it’s true, but they’re not going to make this easy for their rivals so I don’t see many counters happening for Lausanne Sport, which should make them sitting ducks.
Servette lost Schalk during the international break. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t regard that as a problem because he was never that good. However, he’d been playing really well as an inside forward with Bedia leading the line – and now he’s gone. I think it’ll be quite telling for Oberlin if he doesn’t get that starting berth because he’s the best equipped to do it – if he stays injury-free and consistent. Knowing Geiger though, I suspect it’ll be Rodelin because he simply trusts him more – and I don’t blame him.
The rest of the squad is fine though, really. They’re not missing any of note other than Fofana, who has been out all season. Douline is getting a run in the team ahead of Cespedes at the moment, which isn’t a pragmatic long-term switch but it can be beneficial in the short-term. They’re very slick on the ball, Servette, and very good at creating chances. Imeri is getting back to his best too. The only problem I have with the Geneva outfit is if Bedia doesn’t play because they don’t have a recognisable striker in that instance, and they miss it. They miss chances too. Still, all the indications from the Servette camp are that he’ll play, and that’s good enough for me.
Therefore, backing Servette to win at 19/20 appeals to me greatly. They’re in a far better place mentally, have an attack, and are playing well.
Verdict: Servette to win at 19/20.
