Today’s free tip is in the Brazilian Serie A encounter between Vasco da Gama and Goias.

Barbieri is living on borrowed time now, isn’t he? Despite Vasco da Gama’s gambles on Teixeira, Bambu, and even securing wonderkid Andrey Santos on loan, they just can’t produce good displays. They look as if they’re still in pre-season mode, if that makes sense – slow, awkward, and predictable. They’ve lost five on the bounce, and are without a win in any competition since mid-April so they’re suddenly red-hot favourites to beat Goias, I don’t know. They may have some superior individuals but that’s literally it, and not many of them are available here.

Bambu is; that’s a plus. Santos, though? Out. Defensive regular Rodriguez is with the Uruguayan national team. Numerous others are out, and it’s not all that clear if Galarza will make it back from international duty with Paraguay in time to play, nor indeed what condition he’s in should he play. These are big problems for a team that already has…well, big problems. They’re low on confidence, can’t keep teams out, and aren’t threatening enough. Again, why they’re odds-on to win here, I don’t know.

Goias themselves are nothing special, of course. Their problem is scoring goals, although they did bag two against Fluminense last time out, not that it was enough to prevent Armando Evangelista being appointed as their new manager the following day. A new manager ‘bounce’ here would be most opportune for us but we’ll have to wait and see on that front.

What Goias lack in individual quality, they make up for in togetherness. Goal-scoring is a problem for them but they won’t get a better chance to score goals than they will in Rio de Janeiro tonight. Besides, they’re good enough to hold Vasco da Gama at arm’s length here, given the hosts’ absentees/likely absentees. I can’t say with 100% surety that Goias will get something here but with the above in mind, I’m sure you can understand why I think that the home win is priced too short.

Although by no means a banker, I like odds of 103/100 on Goias getting something from this game; it’s a fine time to face sleeping giants Vasco da Gama!

Verdict: Goias to win with a +0.5 Asian Handicap at 103/100.
