Today’s free tip is in the UEFA European Championship Qualifier between Faroe Islands and Poland.
I watched the reversal of this fixture, and ended up feeling very sorry for the Faroe Islands. Poland squandered one good chance but other than that, they failed to create meaningful opportunities throughout the contest. Only a dicey penalty award bailed them out, Lewandowski doing what he does best, and he won’t be doing that here as he’s injured. He’s not the only noteworthy player out of their squad, either – Piatek, Zalewski, Linetty, Krychowiak, and Bednarek are all out. As much as I’d have to concede that Poland remain the better team here, if they can win in such a challenging geographical location without the afore-mentioned then I’ll be very impressed.
Poland struggle to perform as a unit, you see. It’s dogged them for years. Occasionally they’ll turn up in a big game from nowhere but it happens no more than once every one or two years, and I don’t see that motivation randomly appearing against their Faroese hosts. There are still some good players in their squad like Grosicki, Zielinski (barely shows up at international level, mind you), Swiderski, and MIlik that means I cannot rule out the away win. Again though, this is not an impressive team, to be frank.
I also believe that Poland are going to try and protect their somewhat suspect back four. They’re lacking experience, not to mention quality centre-backs, so I suspect they’ll play a percentages game here, confident in their capacity to outscore the Faroe Islands. That approach is logical but whether it works or not remains to be seen. You see, the Faroe Islands have improved a lot over the past few years, and I won’t oppose them at home anymore for that reason.
They’re mostly at full-strength, the home team. Long-term absentee Johannesen, Klettskard, Bartalsstovu, and Meinhard Olsen are all out, none of which are really missed. Hallur Hansson is the only one that’s missed but he’s been omitted because of how long he’s been without regular football, although being at KI will improve that situation in due course. Their main players are available, and that should mean that Edmundsson, Vatnhamar, Klaemint Olsen, Hendriksson, Radosavljevic, and Knudsen are in a position to cause Poland problems.
They’re pretty compact at the back too, Faroe Islands. They don’t lose many aerial duels, they’re well-protected by the midfielders in front of them, and they’re tactically savvy. This is a solid group, despite their inexperienced goalkeeper selection, and one that I really don’t expect to lose this game.
Whether Faroe Islands lose it or not though, I have to believe that this is going to be an under 2.5 goals affair.
Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 4/5.
