Liverpool vs Chelsea

Free

Saturday was pretty terrible, eh? Sorry to all those who followed my tips – pretty poor showing, in my opinion. Sundays are usually better though so let’s see how we fare today.

Today’s featured game is the English Premier League clash between Liverpool and Chelsea. These two sides used to participate in what is known as “Super Sunday” in England whereby Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool all face each other. However, that idea has been quashed so far this season, most probably because Liverpool are pretty terrible and that is actually my main motivation for this bet today.

Sixteenth in the English Premier League table after ten rounds of fixtures, Liverpool look far from impressive under new manager Roy Hodgson. I have a lot of respect for their vastly experienced and able manager but this is not his ship to save – the wounds are too deep within this club. The financial saga surrounding the club may finally be at an end but now the problems that face this club are even more glaringly obvious than before with a distinct lack of quality in their squad. Liverpool are boringly predictable and incredibly impotent with star striker Fernando Torres misfiring and as a result, this two-man team looks very average indeed. Liverpool are unbeaten in four games so they do bring some good momentum into this game. However, their form really does flatter them, in my opinion. Their first game was a dreary 0-0 draw at SSC Napoli in a game of few chances, the second was an emphatic win against a Blackburn Rovers side missing both starting centre-backs, the third was an extremely fortunate 0-1 victory at Bolton Wanderers despite barely carving out a chance in the game, and their 3-1 win at home to Napoli a few days ago stemmed entirely from defensive capitulation by the Italians. Liverpool simply are not playing well and it’s no surprise that Hodgson praised Gerrard in light of his display against Napoli because Gerrard is the only player in this side currently playing well enough to wear the shirt. Torres isn’t scoring goals and the rest either aren’t good enough or aren’t playing well enough so Liverpool look really suspect at the moment – they’ve just not faced the right opponents to exploit that fact of late.

However, reigning champions Chelsea really should be able to break Liverpool’s momentum in half today, even if they only produce a half-assed display. Chelsea are light years ahead of Liverpool in terms of experience, ability, and composure so they should make it count here. They won here last year in a crucial encounter for the league title which was particularly notable for the “accidental” back pass from Steven Gerrard to give Chelsea a goal which ironically left Manchester United with very little chance of winning the title. Chelsea didn’t play particularly well in that game but they still won the game fairly easily although how easy Liverpool made it for them is still open to debate. Chelsea impressively won at Blackburn Rovers in their last away game, which is a nightmare venue for any Premier League side, and a 4-1 drubbing of Spartak Moscow mid-week without getting out of second gear emphasised just why Chelsea are the feared opponent that they are – they take their chances. Chelsea’s actual squad depth is somewhat abysmal, to be honest with you – I simply have a great deal of respect for their first-team. Their youngsters aren’t anywhere near good enough and they’ll struggle in years to come without heavy investment but their current starting eleven is excellent with a good combination of experience, pace, and ability. Chelsea outclass their opponents in every area of the field and although they’re still missing a few players due to injury, I’ll be beyond surprised if they don’t win this one today.

This game used to be a big game but it just isn’t anymore. Liverpool are nothing more than a name in the history books nowadays whereas Chelsea are one of England’s two leading lights in European and domestic football and I expect the gulf in class to show today. Chelsea are more than good enough to keep Liverpool out so if they edge in front then I fully expect them to win. To me, odds of evens on the away win reflect Liverpool’s past far more than their present so the value is in the away win today.

Verdict: Chelsea to win at evens.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Sydney FC vs Newcastle Jets – home win at 4/5.

A-League giants Sydney have been dormant for a good portion of the current season and linger disastrously in last place with just one win in twelve games due to shambolic defending and ineffective finishing. However, the hosts are beginning to wake up a little now and are unbeaten in two games following an emphatic 0-3 win at Perth Glory and a 1-1 draw at home to in-form Brisbane Roar. Indeed, Sydney have only lost at home to in-form Adelaide United this season so the form chart can be a tad deceptive. It’s true that Sydney aren’t scoring enough goals and that sides are taking points off them by being able to equalise without fear of conceding again but this game is different today. Sydney bring momentum into the game and they’re facing a Newcastle Jets side that simply don’t score goals so the opportunity is at hand for Sydney to win their first home game of the campaign. The Jets lost at home to newly-promoted Melbourne Heart last match so things aren’t good in their camp at the moment. They’re a very defensive side and it’s not hard to see why as they simply don’t score enough goals to counter sides that score against them. Nonetheless, this negative attitude has cost them severely this season with three defeats and two draws from five away games. Newcastle have failed to find the net in three of those games and given that they’ve lost five out of their last six games at Sydney, three of them without even scoring, things don’t look particularly good for the visitors. What I will say for the Jets is that they don’t concede easily so Sydney are up against it today. Nonetheless, the hosts are the better side and if they were in-form then they’d easily be closer to 1/2 than they are today so I think there’s value in the home win today in what should be a rather boring and low-scoring affair.

Verdict: Sydney FC to win at 4/5.

Wiener Neustadt vs Salzburg – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

I was tempted to take the away win here as Salzburg begin to look their old selves again but decided against it on the basis that they had a tough game with Juventus in Turin mid-week. However, over 2.5 goals at 4/5 looks good to me for this one when you consider that three out of the last four meetings between these two clubs has gone over 2.5 goals!

Aside from that – let’s also remember that Wiener Neustadt cannot defend. They admirably attack throughout and generally obtain respectable results due to their ability to score goals. Wiener Neustadt’s games have an average of three goals per game and with an average of nearly two goals scored per home game and an average of a goal conceded per home game, it’s hard to see the hosts not doing their fair share in steering this game towards over 2.5 goals. They’ve actually been rather boring of late with rather well-marshalled displays seeing them involved in low-scoring games. However, they’re going to have to be at their best against reigning champions Salzburg today and I think they’re going to need at least two goals to claim a draw at the very least here so I expect Wiener Neustadt to do what they do best and attack Salzburg.

However, Salzburg are beginning to look their untouchable selves again and that’s always dangerous. They’ve only won twice in five consecutive games, it’s true, but when you consider that two of those games were against Juventus and one was against title rivals Rapid Vienna, then you can begin to understand and perhaps even respect those results. Salzburg aren’t as dangerous now as they were when Marc Janko led the line but Salzburg still boast dangerous attacking options in the form of Zarate, Wallner, and Boghossian, not to mention the support that the afore-mentioned get from midfielders Svento and Jantscher! Salzburg are playing good football ahead of this clash and they’ve beaten a decent Wacker Innsbruck twice in recent times so they do bring momentum into this game too and thus I expect a good display from them.

Tiredness may be a factor for the visitors today and if it is when Wiener will attack and punish them for it. However, both sides’ business is scoring goals and with both sides tending to play open football, over 2.5 goals really should be priced shorter than it is here so my value call for this game is over 2.5 goals.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Avai vs Botafogo – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Both sides need the points. Avai aren’t playing well but Botafogo are. Botafogo aren’t very good travellers, generally speaking, and Avai are good at home, generally speaking. However, roles are reversed currently with Botafogo travelling well and Avai suffering wherever they play. It’ll take a bolder man than me to enter the 1×2 market for this one but with four out of Avai’s last six home games in Serie A having gone over 2.5 goals and Botafogo having scored in seven out of their last eight away games, you have to feel that over 2.5 goals is a very realistic possibility here. Two out of the last three meetings between these clubs have gone over 2.5 goals and with the stakes high for this one, I expect goals galore in this game too.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Slavia Sofia vs Levski Sofia – home win with draw no bet at 6/4.

Slavia Sofia are one of the older clubs in the Bulgarian A PFG but their neighbours CSKA Sofia, Levski Sofia, and Lokomotiv Sofia all tend to outshine them domestically nowadays. However, they do compete well in derbies via hard work and good organisation as they can’t compete with the likes of today’s opponents Levski on a quality freont. Slavia’s good tactical approach tends to work well for them too as wins against CSKA Sofia and Lokomotiv Plovdiv already this season can prove. Slavia are not an easy side to score against, simply put, and although Levski are the bigger and better side, I don’t see the visitors having it all their own way tonight.

Levski may have a terrific head-to-head record against local rivals Slavia Sofia but they’ve not got a good recent record in all competitions with three defeats and one draw in their past four games. A defeat in France against LOSC Lille started the rot and was then complimented by a key defeat in a heated game with title rivals Litex Lovech, which was then followed by a surprise defeat at home to a decent Lokomotiv Plovdiv side. Levski played well in their 2-2 draw at home to LOSC Lille mid-week but again, they’re not winning games and as a result they don’t have much momentum nor confidence. As if that weren’t enough, however, Levski miss key striker Dembele and key midfielder Tasevski for this game. I don’t mind backing Levski if only one of their creative midfielders is out but if they’re missing star striker Dembele then they look like they did last season – predictable – and they’re then unreliable. Therefore, I think Levski are in for a very long game against Slavia today and I’d be surprised to see them win the game.

Slavia don’t score many goals so this game does have its risk elements. However, Slavia will work hard and if they go in front then they’ll fight hard to keep it. I don’t rate Levski without Dembele and although that might come back to bite me in the backside, I fancy the home win with draw no bet because I don’t think Levski will score enough goals here to win. Let’s also not forget that Slavia’s manager and the vast majority of their players are ex-Levski Sofia staff too – they’ll be keen to do well in this game!

Verdict: Slavia Sofia to win with draw no bet at 6/4.

Atletico Huila vs Independiente Medellin – lay Atletico Huila at 4/5.

I’ve spoken numerous times about not backing away sides in Colombia and I’ll rarely do so but these odds are ridiculously good. There’s a good reason that Atletico Huila haven’t beaten Independiente Medellin in nine consecutive attempts and it’s because their opponents are better than they are! Independiente aren’t having a good season because they’re not taking their chances well enough – ok, that’s their problem. They’re still not an easy side to beat though! They’ve only lost two away games in the current campaign – one of them was the derby with Atletico Nacional and the other was at potent and talented Once Caldas Manizales – so Independiente are far from a pushover. Huila have played well this season, especially at home, and I’d even argue that they do stand their best chance in years of actually overcoming their superior opponents. However, I still don’t think they’re good enough to warrant 4/5 to beat a better side than they are so my call is to lay the hosts here at 4/5.

Verdict: Lay Atletico Huila at 4/5.

Atletico Nacional de Medellin vs La Equidad Bogota – under 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Atletico Nacional don’t score in Medellin and La Equidad don’t score outside Bogota – enough said?! Atletico Nacional love their low-scoring home wins as they like to dominate play and La Equidad play a more open brand of football that allows for goals to be scored and conceded all over the place but they tend to fail to score on the road a lot more than they’d like. Four out of the last five meetings in Medellin between these two sides has gone under 2.5 goals and with Atletico Nacional’s last two Primera A games having gone under 2.5 goals, you have to feel that under 2.5 goals on this game is rather generously priced at this game whilst the odds remain at 4/5.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Mlada Boleslav vs Slovacko – home win with -1.5 handicap at 7/5.

I’ve no concerns over this game being successful from an attacking perspective but I do have my concerns defensively. Mlada Boleslav are a very talented attacking unit as they showed lately by overcoming league leaders Viktoria Plzen 4-3 and the hosts average scoring over two goals per home game at the moment. However, Mlada don’t pay a great deal of attention to their defence on their own turf and that jeopardises this bet somewhat. It aids my call the Mlada are facing Slovacko, however, as Slovacko are a poor outfit at best, especially away from home. Slovacko don’t attack or defend well on the road, hence their record of six defeats in seven away games, scoring three times but conceding over two goals per away game on average. Slovacko have lost four consecutive games ahead of this one and they’ve only scored in two of those games so times are bad for the relegation-threatened side. Indeed, Slovacko bafflingly managed to lose 7-0 to fellow relegation battlers Brno in recent times so morale is low. Boleslav is not the place to be when you’re low on confidence as numerous sides this season can testify and I think we’ll see it by the final whistle too. Mlada scored enough goals here last season to beat the handicap but their defending let them down in a 3-2 win. Slovacko look even worse in attack on the road this season than they did last season so I’m going to be bold and take the defensively-inept hosts to beat the -1.5 goal handicap as 7/5 looks a bit too generous to overlook.

Verdict: Mlada Boleslav to win with a -1.5 goal handicap at 7/5.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen vs Kaiserslautern – under 2.5 goals at 13/10.

This one speaks for itself, really, as neither side scores many goals. The absence of Kiessling in the Leverkusen camp is more and more apparent as the weeks go by with four consecutive games having gone under 2.5 goals as they aren’t scoring goals. Leverkusen’s defending tends to be solid and reliable but they don’t score many without Kiessling and I think we’ll see more of the same today. Kaiserslautern are struggling following promotion last season, especially away from home as they concede too easily, but I just don’t see where Leverkusen’s goals will come from. Leverkusen may well win this game but there’s no value in those odds, in my opinion. For me, taking under 2.5 goals at 13/10 seems the way forward as it’s rather generously priced, in my humble opinion.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 13/10.

Udinese vs Cagliari – home win at 4/5.

No defeats in six games; four clean sheets along the way – are Udinese back in business? I’d say so. They’ve won three consecutive home games (five consecutive games in all competitions both at home and away) so morale is sky-high in the Udine camp currently. They’re scoring goals for fun and with the constant threat in attack of pacey Alexis Sanchez and experienced Antonio Di Natale, Udinese will always look a threat whilst in-form. We all know how good Udinese can be – the problem is that they don’t have a middle-ground, so to speak. They either play very well or very badly and the lack of ability that they have to grind out results when not playing well is quite staggering, really. Nonetheless, that’s not a concern for today as Udinese are playing very well indeed and to be honest, they have enough to make it count today. Cagliari are never good travellers in Serie A and I think that’s indicated quite well by the fact that the only occasions where Cagliari have avoided defeat on the road this season are when their hosts haven’t scored – every time Cagliari have conceded on the road, they’ve lost, basically. Cagliari are offensively sound but defensively a nightmare away from home and an in-form Udinese should be able to exploit that today, especially with Cagliari missing key defender Pisano.

Team news – Cagliari miss Lazzari, Pisano, and Ragatzu whereas Udinese miss Pasquale, Basta, and Ferronetti.

Verdict: Udinese to win at 4/5.

CFR Cluj vs Dinamo Bucharest – over 2.5 goals at 6/5.

I’ve mentioned in recent times about Dinamo Bucharest’s inability to defend and guess what? That’s still not changed; they still can’t defend! The problem is that they’re now facing a side that actually can do them a lot of damage in that area so they should be concerned. CFR’s problem is that they’re not playing well because they don’t score enough goals. That problem may be resolved against a defensively-inept Dinamo Bucharest side today but they’re going to have to score a lot of goals to outscore arguably the most potent side in the division. Cluj are not at their best by any stretch of the imagination and they’ll be disappointed at their humbling against Bayern Munich mid-week after a spirited display in Germany two weeks earlier. Nonetheless, Cluj do have some good attacking threats themselves i.e. Culio, Peralta, Traore etc. so I expect them to do damage today. Three out of Cluj’s last four Liga games have gone over 2.5 goals as they struggle with defensive problems themselves and this fixture has gone over 2.5 goals for two consecutive seasons whilst it’s been played in Cluj. With three out of Dinamo’s last four Liga games having gone over 2.5 goals too and neither side able to defend competently at the moment, this games screams “over 2.5 goals” so that’s my call today at decidedly generous odds of 6/5.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 6/5.

Trabzonspor vs Galatasaray – home win at 23/20.

Galatasaray have been riding their luck for some time but that may finally come back to haunt them today. I’m not sure how they managed to beat Antalyaspor in Hagi’s first game in charge but luck was on their side, seemingly. However, they’re going to need a lot more than luck to beat the best Trabzonspor side in many years and they should really be caught out here. A new manager isn’t going to resolve Galatasaray’s distinct lack of quality and it’s somewhat inevitable with that in mind that Hagi will experience the same problems that his predecessor Rijkaard had – a lack of quality leading to a lack of belief and thus leading to a lack of results. Galatasaray have four good players – Kewell, Turan, Baros, and Neill – and Turan and Baros both miss this game through injury so how are Gala going to get something here? Trabzonspor admittedly miss Glowacki and Teofilo for this game but they’ve still got enough to trouble Galatasaray in this game and even beat them, just as they did here last season. Trabzonspor are a much more complete unit than Galatasaray are, in my opinion, and this is the type of venue where that should count too. Trabzonspor are unbeaten in five games, winning their last four consecutively, so momentum is strong for them currently. The only sides Gala have won at in the Super Lig this season are newly-promoted Bucaspor and relegation-threatened Eskisehirspor so I doubt Trabzonspor will be overly concerned here. There’s enough creativity and ability in favour of the hosts to finally dismantle giants Galatasaray and although Hagi is working on Gala’s leaky defence, I don’t think it’ll change them enough in time to prevent defeat at in-form Trabzonspor so my call is the home win here.

Team news – Gala miss Turan, Baros, and Kurtulus whereas Trabzonspor miss Glowacki and Teofilo.

Verdict: Trabzonspor to win at 23/20.
