Ordinarily, you can expect odds to rise on a team when they’re playing domestic football at the weekend following a big European game. That’s happened here – to an extent – but it mystifies me on this occasion.
I mean, I have a lot of respect for Udinese’s fighting spirit. I still maintain that few Serie A sides fight a consistently hard as they do. They try to play good football, they give kids a chance, and they bring players up to have good attitudes. A team like that deserves respect and even adulation to an extent.
However, when it comes to sheer effectiveness, Udinese don’t have any. This is because they’ve not had a good striker on their books since Di Natale hung up his boots, and even he should have hung them up a few years prior. Indeed, he did try to but he was petitioned into coming back because the team needed him so much. Subsequently, Udinese are a team that do not regularly take their chances, which is why I fear that their stay in Serie A will not be for much longer. Time will tell, of course, and you can never write them off because of their fantastic scouting system that allows them to pick up ridiculously talented youngster for small fees. However, at this moment in time, they’re not a team I can take seriously because they will usually concede a goal and as they’re not scoring any, they’re not going to win any games. It’s that simple.
Now, I won’t deny that SS Lazio are incredibly generous sometimes. Just watch the highlights reel from their game against Salzburg mid-week and you’ll see what I mean – sometimes they just give goals away for fun. However, Inzaghi’s boys don’t mind that so much because they know that they can outscore most teams in Italy right now, Udinese included. They’ve got a big second leg with Salzburg coming up next week so rotation is possible here but even that does not bother me. SS Lazio are so strong mentally that it doesn’t matter who plays. This team finds ways to score goals and win games, and an opponent like Udinese does not look capable of preventing such from happening here.
As far as I am concerned, SS Lazio are the far better side and they are a far more consistent team than Udinese too. They know how to win games from difficult positions. They seldom leave a game without scoring. All of these traits makes them a nightmare for goal-shy teams like Udinese so despite SS Lazio’s packed roster, I cannot realistically doubt the away win.
Verdict: SS Lazio to win at 83/100.
