This is likely to be a very annoying game for Viktoria Plzen. They don’t like it when teams sit deep against them, which is precisely what relegation-threatened Slovacko will do. A draw is a decent result for the visitors here; they’re not in a position where they are desperate for wins. The same could be said for the home team really. In order to throw away the title, Viktoria Plzen would need to fail to get four points from a possible nine – and Slavia Prague would need to win every game. I don’t see it happening, even if Viktoria Plzen don’t win today. Therefore, I don’t see this game being at enough of a pivotal stage for teams to recklessly commit men forward, which means it should follow at least some logic.
The table-toppers are at their best when afforded space. They like to use their pace to their advantage, especially with a big target man in the middle awaiting good crosses. They’re not afraid to commit men forward, and they tend to cause problems for teams. However, when breaking opponents down, Viktoria Plzen do tend to be the architects of their own downfall. Yes, they generally find a way through, but their attacking nature makes them very suspect on the break. I’ve seen Bohemians 1905 hurt them this season by playing defensively and breaking well. I don’t know why Slovacko can’t do the same today.
As I’ve said before, it’s this time of season that suits Slovacko the best. It requires a tremendous amount of tenacity, belief, and stamina to handle such difficult times, and Slovacko have an abundance of those characteristics. They may not be especially good but they fight more than most and the few good players they do have tend to operate at a level that is far above them. That’s why I take Slovacko seriously during such periods, especially when they’re involved in a relegation battle. I can see them putting in a very focused and organised display today and if they do, they can definitely get something from a game against what has become a bafflingly inconsistent Viktoria Plzen.
Viktoria Plzen are the better side here; no questions asked. However, with Slovacko looking more motivated and consistent at the moment, not to mention their style likely to cause their hosts problems, I’ll try my hand at Slovacko winning with a +1 Asian Handicap here, which would have won for four out of their last six visits.
Verdict: Slovacko to win with a +1 Asian Handicap at 7/5.
