Today’s free tip is in the Norwegian Eliteserien encounter between Bodo/Glimt and Viking Stavanger.

On the back of yet another win for surprise title hopefuls Bodo/Glimt, I’m finding it really hard to doubt them against Viking Stavanger today. Away from home, I tend to find that they give too many opportunities away, which was certainly the case in Drammen last time out. However, at home, Bodo/Glimt tend to be very impressive indeed. What’s quite remarkable about that is that it’s true even in the more average seasons where they possess lesser quality. The travel time to get to the Aspmyra Stadion plays a part, of course, but there’s more to it than that. Taking on such a hard-working, energetic team with good support behind them is really very challenging. That’s even truer now that Bodo/Glimt actually have a good squad.

It’s taken very solid tactical displays from Brann Bergen and Sarpsborg 08 to avoid defeat when they’ve travelled to the Aspmyra Stadion. No other team has had the quality nor the organisation to do it – Bodo/Glimt have beaten everyone else, inclusive of Rosenborg BK, Odd, Stromsgodset, Lillestrom, and table-toppers Molde FK themselves, and few home games have gone by where they’ve scored less than two goals. It’s been impossible to contain them, really – they’re too good in the final third.

You see, what’s being skirted over with these fantastic statistics of Bodo/Glimt’s is that they’re not dominating teams, per se. They’re working harder than most but they’re also giving away lots of chances. The difference between Bodo/Glimt and other teams is that they’re taking their chances with an incredibly impressive level of consistency. It’s not as if one player is carrying them, either. Lajouni, Zinckernagel, Herrem, Saltnes, and Konradsen have all chipped in with goals. That said, if I was forced to pick one player, it’d have to be wonderkid Evjen. He’s remarkably composed in front of goal for his age, and rumours have it that English clubs are already scouting him. Anyway, the point is that everyone is on the same page, pulling in the same direction, and the results are there for all to see. This is a very impressive outfit because they aren’t afraid to attack, and they’re good when they do.

Can Viking Stavanger match the goals of their hosts today? I doubt it. They’ve got some good options in Hoiland, Thorsvedt, Torsteinbo, and Bytyqi, and I am really looking forward to seeing Kallman whenever he’s drafted in because he was excellent at Inter Turku. However, what Viking Stavanger lack is a spine to the team, and it’s really hurting them. Scoring goals isn’t going to get them anywhere whilst their defending is as poor as it is. They can hold their own against reasonable mid-table teams and lower, but good teams seldom leave games against them without bagging at least two or three goals. Bodo/Glimt themselves won 4-3 in Stavanger not long back!

Just two teams in the Eliteserien have conceded more goals on the road than Viking Stavanger this season, which is disheartening for the visitors, considering that they’re facing one of the prolific teams in the division. Heads have dropped a little of late too, which is far from ideal. I just can’t see any positives for Viking Stavanger here. This is a tough away game at any time, let alone when things aren’t going your way and the quality gap favours the home team.

Football is football; anything can happen, I suppose. However, if logic is play any part in this fixture, Bodo/Glimt will win it by a number of goals, hence the below tip.

Verdict: Bodo/Glimt to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 83/100.
