Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Hannover 96 and Wehen Wiesbaden.
Despite losing against Jahn Regensburg earlier this week, I quite like where Hannover 96 are at. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt from that game as it was a rather rusty affair between two teams that haven’t kicked a ball in weeks. That, factored in with the blizzard which took place in the first half, made it into a disappointingly low-scoring game. Hannover 96 gave Jahn Regensburg plenty to think about though, which was encouraging.
Now, if Hannover 96 can repeat that today, they should win this game convincingly. Hannover 96 being better than Wehen Wiesbaden is not something new. Them proving it, however, is another matter. They’ve been awful since they got relegated from the Bundesliga, making all of the mistakes under the sun, which is why they’re closer to relegation from the Bundesliga 2 rather than vying for promotion.
Still, what I saw from Hannover 96 in Regensburg was encouraging. They played on the front foot, making chances regularly, They forced their opponents back, time and time again. All they need is a bit more nous in front of goal. That’s why they’ve made cracking signings though. I mean, Swedish battering ram Guidetti playing at this level? Former Brondby midfielder Kaiser? These two players are going to make a significant improvement to the Hannover 96 attack.
No, I don’t trust Hannover 96 defensively. They make too many mistakes, for starters, and their defenders are often left too isolated by their midfield. However, I trust their attacking approach a lot more now that they’ve got an attack that could and should win them matches from deploying such a style. That method has worked plenty of times in the past for Bundesliga 2 clubs but Hannover 96 thought they could do it this season without good attackers – even after selling Bebou! Now they’ve woken up and smelt the coffee, I expect a lot more beans in their display, if you’ll pardon the pew.
Wehen Wiesbaden – I like them, but I fear for them at this level. They’ve not got what it takes to play Bundesliga 2 football. The desire is there, the attacking football is good, and they’ve got some old hands in their squad too. However, they play like a group of kids – too eager to attack, even at silly times. They fell into most traps against Erzgebirge Aue mid-week but managed to hang on for three points with ten men. Had they been facing a team that were more used to playing on the front foot, I doubt they’d have held out.
That’s just it – Wehen Wiesbaden are naive. Sometimes that can be a good thing, as it grants them the power to launch fearless attacks. However, once that gets a bit old, it becomes a negative because teams know you’ll make mistakes, and can wait until you do. Wehen Wiesbaden don’t have the quality to get away with playing the style they do, to be frank. I like them, and I love their energy, but there can be no acceptable excuses for good teams failing to beat this side – and Hannover 96 are a good team.
Therefore, assuming Hannover 96 play their newbies, I’m on the home win here as my main tip. My second tip is for Guidetti to score at any time.
Verdict: Hannover 96 to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 51/50.
Verdict 2: Guidetti to score at any time at 13/8.
