I do feel a bit sorry for Mazatlan this season. They approached it with a good plan, recruiting Aristeguieta as their target man, playmaker Valdivia to run the show, and Sanvezzo to make a nuisance of himself by drifting all over the attack. Two very good players for the Liga MX. The big Venezuelan has done well enough, but the Chilean has barely featured due to injuries, and nor has Sanvezzo, which has lessened the effectiveness of Aristeguieta. Even backup striker Sansores hasn’t been able to do much because the service has been starved. At some point though, this team is going to get going, and when they do, they’ll score goals.

To be fair to Mazatlan, they have tried to play attacking football this season. Without their chief creative threats though, it cannot be considered a surprise that they’ve lost so many games. They’ve needed promising youngster Huerta to carry their midfield this season, which says it all really. Too many new faces and too many key absentees have cost Mazatlan, and it’s meant that they’ve conceded a substantial amount more than they’ve scored.

Ahead of the trip to the capital though, they’re largely back to a full complement here. Young forward Marin is out, and Valdivia is a doubt, but the rest are ready. They’ll get space today too, Mazatlan, because America are always expected to attack and score goals anyway, but especially so under Herrera. Mazatlan could hurt America here for it, just as they did with Pachuca lately, being desperately unlucky to lose 4-3 at the death. They held Tigres UANL to a 1-1 draw at home last time out too. The form guide may not be kind to Mazatlan, but this team is improving, and I think they’ll improve against soulless America tonight too, whether that results in them getting a positive result or not.

America are obviously the better team, and anything but a home win here would be surprising. America like to ‘surprise’ like that though, often baulking under the weight of expectation. They’re only encouraged to attack, America, and that won’t change against inferior Mazatlan. That’s why they score so many goals. They still concede far too many though, even though most of their defensive casualties are now back. It’s their style and complacency that leads to so many chances given away, and I can’t see why we should expect anything else tonight.

Still – the America attack is pretty terrifying. They don’t need to play well in order to score three or four goals. Ibarguen is still out, but Giovani dos Santos is finally back from a lengthy lay-off, and you all know how good he is! Martin has been in decent enough form up front this season, as has Vinas, and highly-rated Paraguayan striker Diaz should not be overlooked either, although he still awaits his first Liga MX goal. Martinez is such a threat too; pretty much good at everything, the Colombian attacker. Then you’ve got Cordova and Sanchez supporting; sometimes even Suarez, because Caseres does the sitting job well enough. It’s an attack that no Liga MX team can justly expect to contain.

America are perceived to be the great entertainers of the Liga MX. I believe that to be true, although comically it’s more because of how inconsistent they are, and how many chances they give away. Still, they do score some wonderful goals, and I refuse to believe Mazatlan can stop them from scoring at least twice tonight; probably more besides.

Therefore, I’m going to back over 3 goals at 49/50.

Verdict: Over 3 goals at 49/50.
