Today’s free tip is in the Brazilian Serie A encounter between Atletico Goianiense and Corinthians.

I can’t really pretend to understand how appointing Mancini as  manager was a progressive step for Corinthians. Very little of what they do nowadays is progressive anyway, but they did change things up for this season only to abandon the project of attacking football just halfway through the season. Now they want to go back to their defensive ways again. It’s sad, and it won’t endear them any more to the Brazilian public that detest them, but I suppose you could argue that it does suit their squad more. Or rather, it used to. Their defence is still capable of playing in that setup, but their midfield concerns me a lot on that front as they lack controllers.

Still, if there’s one game it should benefit Corinthians in, this Mancini appointment, it’s tonight’s match against Atletico Goianiense. Remember that they’re facing the club that they brought Mancini in from. He had Atletico Goianiense playing so well in just three months that Corinthians moved to appoint him. He knows the home team well enough by now, as well as the pitch itself, and that should be more than enough of a booster for tonight’s visitors. They already have the better team; having that advantage too is a big boost.

I didn’t catch the Corinthians Copa do Brasil draw against America Mineiro mid-week but the outcome didn’t surprise me; breaking teams down remains a problem area for them. However, I did catch their game against Internacional at weekend, and I thought they were excellent. Corinthians were fresh, hungry, closing down, tracking runners – everything they hadn’t been doing for ages. I suspect it’s more of a new manager bounce than anything; it’s hard for me to believe that Corinthians will do anything but revert back into their slovenly approach, given time. For now though, I like where they’re.

Yes, breaking Atletico Goianiense down is going to be problematic for them because they don’t commit enough men forward, they don’t play adventurously enough, and they’re now without their best striker, Jo. However, with their performance last weekend in mind, I believe that Corinthians can not only control this game, but almost entirely nullify the attacking threat of their hosts, which is limited to begin with. With ninety minutes to play, and most of the ball guaranteed to be in their possession, I have to believe that Luan, Boselli etc. can manage at least something between them, and if they do, Corinthians should be able to hold it.

I certainly wouldn’t back the visitors tonight without draw no bet cover, for clarity. A draw is quite possible here, given the negative football that both teams play. For a change though, I don’t really see Corinthians losing it, not whilst they’ve got this energy about them that their new manager has brought to the table. They’ve got enough individual talent in the final third to edge this encounter, and given their perilous Serie A league placing, I think it’s fair to say that they absolutely need to.

So, what can we expect from Atletico Goianiense? Well, they finally decided who their new manager would be, which is Dorita, whose sole experience of management in Serie A was a a caretaker boss of Bahia back in 2011. Since then, he’s been working with lower league teams CRB and Votuporanguense, and I’ve described it as such in a very generous fashion, given that he’s spent no more than four months in either job. It’s an interesting appointment; I’ll give Atletico Goianiense that. Unsurprisingly, the impact on the team since his arrival has been negative.

Fair play, though – they’ve had some tough games, Atletico Goianiense. Palmeiras, slick Coritiba, and a double-header against Internacional? Yikes! As per usual, they’ve not struggled to apply themselves well in those games, Atletico Goianiense, but they’ve certainly shown how much they relied on Mancini’s organisation during that period because they keep conceding without response. During those four games, they’ve only bagged twice, and both were at the end of the match, one of which was a penalty. It’s not very convincing, is it?

In general, the way to deal with this team is to work as hard as they do, if not moreso. They’ve got speed, aggression, and experience – but not quality. If you deny them of their tenacity advantage, then they’re generally there for the taking, Atletico Goianiense, just as both Palmeiras and Internacional have proved lately, as well as Coritiba. There really isn’t anything for Corinthians to fear here with the proviso that they’re organised and motivated. Marking Hyuri isn’t too hard, and he’s not clinical anyway, and isolating Vargas from his teammates will always work. If I can see it, I’m sure their former manager can, so again, Corinthians have no acceptable excuses for failing to anticipate every single thing that their hosts do here.

Therefore, even without Jo available to the away team, backing Corinthians to win with draw no bet cover at 9/10 appeals to me greatly.

Verdict: Corinthians to win with draw no bet at 9/10.
