Today’s free tip is in the Danish Superligaen encounter between Lyngby and AGF.
AGF are playing really well at the moment, and Lyngby are playing really badly. That’s the foundation for this tip, simply put. I do think AGF are the better side anyway, but it takes more than that to convince me to get involved, generally speaking. What I’ve seen from AGF of late, bearing in mind that they’re still without Amini, has been very good. They’re playing with an assurance that makes me trust them more than I normally would.
Lyngby, though – they’re playing like they’ve already been relegated! Losing against Vejle, OB, and FC Copenhagen – I can accept all of those occurrences as they’re all better than Lyngby. The manner of those defeats was totally unacceptable though. Lyngby weren’t working hard enough in those games, and made it very easy for their opponents for that reason. Today’s hosts not being good at defending is news to absolutely nobody. However, this team not working hard enough to at least make their opponents sweat is a new and frankly unwelcome sight for them. If this continues, there won’t be a relegation dogfight for them – they’ll automatically go down, because they’re getting nothing right.
Lyngby playing attacking football because they’re better in attack than defence makes sense. I get that, and I am not prepared to criticise them for it. Lots of players have been chipping in with goals for them this season too, which again, I like. Their best forward – Gytkjaer – is ironically one of the players that haven’t bagged in the Superligaen as of yet. Still, they work a lot on their attacking movement in training, and it shows on the pitch too. They play some very neat attacking football, Lyngby, with good one-twos and adventurous passes. I like it.
How their defence is bad as it is though, I just don’t know. They’ve roped Gammelby into helping Hamalainen out in defence now, so I believe this technically the best Lyngby defence that there has been in years – and yet it looks horrendous. There’s not enough cohesion, nowhere near enough protection, and teams are not struggling to score against them because of it. On paper, their three defeats of late are acceptable. In reality, they’ve lost against a newly-promoted side, an Odense team withouts its best attacker, and the most inconsistent, nervous FC Copenhagen side I’ve seen in years. I’m sure Lyngby will improve in due course, but for the present, they’re a team to oppose.
AGF are playing well enough to handicap them here, as I said earlier. Striker Mortensen is in fine fettle, as was to be expected after his years of dominance in Norway, and he’s being well-supported by Olsen, Thorsteinsson, Poulsen etc. Blume has been in good form this season too. Nielsen’s tactics are the main reason for AGF’s success though. No matter how many goals are scored against the Aarhus outfit, they never seem to be fazed, or to doubt that they’ll get back into the game. They’re not particularly good at the back, even after bringing Diks back, but they are good at controlling games – and that’s what matters more.
Under Nielsen, AGF manage to suppress teams really well. Opponents have to deal with this wall of energy and speed in midfield, and they generally can’t. This is a really settled group, so getting the best out of them is quite straightforward, and they’ve got themselves a natural goal-scorer, not to mention the fact that they’ve unearthed wonderkid Erlykke. I may have seen better AGF sides than this – on paper, but this is the most efficient AGF I’ve seen, and I like it. They’re painful to play against, and I expect struggling Lyngby to walk into every trap that has been set for them here.
Therefore, I’m on AGF to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at generous odds.
Verdict: AGF to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 23/20.
