Today’s free tip is in the Swiss Challenge League encounter between Chiasso and SC Kriens.
You can normally expect goals in Switzerland’s Challenge League. However, matches between Chiasso and SC Kriens tend to be very hard-fought because the two teams cancel one another out well, usually resulting in low-scoring affairs. I recall watching one such encounter earlier this season in which SC Kriens carved out the better opportunities but Abubakar unusually spurned a lot of them, resulting in the game ending in a stalemate. The Portuguese forward may no longer be there, but a similar encounter is to be expected here.
For starters, it’s the business end of the season, and that means every match is a Cup final to Chiasso, who are trying to beat the drop, as per usual. They’ve got one or two good players but are basically a below average group of part-timers that are participating in a division that is too good for them. They’ve used most of their nine lives to date, and I can’t help but wonder if relegation will finally come for them this season. Time will tell, but if they do go down, they can’t really blame anyone else for it.
I watched their last game, which they won 1-0 against Winterthur. There’s a touch of the ‘can’t be arsed’ about Winterthur at the moment, which I am not accustomed to seeing, but they’ve nothing to play for so they’re not doing enough to win games. Having that approach against Chiasso is fatal. They may not be very good ,the southerners, but they bring a real intensity and conviction to their matches and if you don’t step up to meet it, you won’t win. Winterthur proved it too. Chiasso not only won, but were comfortable in doing so, restricting Winterthur to long balls forward, and in general looking closer to scoring a second than their hosts were to equalising. They’re an annoying team to beat, Chiasso.
SC Kriens are the same, though – just with better quality players. They had to find a solution to Abubakar leaving, given that he was their only genuine goal threat, and they have – by loaning Luan, and bringing Sessolo back to Switzerland after a brief stint in Cyprus. Both are good players at this level, and afford SC Kriens an attacking threat that they didn’t have before. Luan is more direct, using his speed and intelligent runs to cause problems, although his finishing isn’t what it should be. Sessolo is a more natural dribbler and visionary, although he is good in front of goal too.
The problem SC Kriens have had lately though is that both Luan and playmaker Yesilcayir have been injured, meaning that they’ve been very predictable to play against. Luan returns tonight, but Yesilcayir is still out, which means that they’re still annoying to beat but winning games looks a touch beyond them at present. Organisation-wise, they remain one of the Challenge League’s better teams but without an attacking threat, even a game against Chiasso should be far harder than usual. Both teams are very rigid with the shapes they hold, and both are similarly ineffectual in front of goal. I can’t think of much greater fodder than that for a low-scoring game to transpire tonight, hence my interest in the game.
Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 83/100.
