Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Holstein Kiel and Jahn Regensburg.

The Holstein Kiel train just keeps rolling on, and I have to say that I love it. They’ve deserved to be promoted for years now, and would make a cracking addition to an already brilliant Bundesliga. Yes, I feared for them when they returned from their Covid-19 break because they looked completely out of sorts. Now, though? They look red-hot once again, and have won three home games on the spin, all of which were done convincingly.

Despite Hamburger SV winning against Nurnberg in emphatic fashion earlier this week, it’s not going to matter if Holstein Kiel just keep winning. Greuther Furth are stumbling, and Hamburger SV are bottlers – but Holstein Kiel have the right mentalities in their squad to embrace this pressure-cooker time. They’re only a solitary win away from Hamburger SV no longer being able to catch them, and a second win would guarantee them promotion. With remaining games against Jahn Regensburg tonight, and then Karlsruher SC away and Darmstadt 98 at home, I’ll be staggered if the northerners don’t manage it.

Please don’t ask me where they’re getting all of this energy from though, because I honestly don’t know. Tonight’s match will be their fifth in fourteen days, which they absolutely do not have the squad for. Still, winning breeds momentum, and that can sometimes act as a handy substitute for stamina. They look a lot more confident now, Holstein Kiel, and they’re almost unplayable at Bundesliga 2 level when they’re like this. Considering that Jahn Regensburg have nothing left to play for this season, I have to believe that the home team will do what is necessary tonight.

No matter what is thrown at them, they always seem to have an answer, the home team. Whether participating in an open match, or having to break teams down, they’ve still found ways through. A team with that kind of mental fortitude is superb at this stage of the season, and I daresay the recent failings of their promotion rivals will only encourage them even more. They’ve got experience, excellent match-winners, and a number of attackers that are performing especially well right now. I just don’t have a reason to doubt this team, folks.

I appreciate that Jahn Regensburg aren’t technically out of the danger zone just yet but in order for them to be sucked into the relegation battle, they’d need either Eintracht Braunschweig or VfL Osnabruck to win both of their remaining matches, neither of which looks very likely right now. Besides, when I watch this team play, I always have the feeling that there’s another level they can reach if they simply pushed for it, just as they did to progress as far as they did in the DFB Pokal this season. Since that run ended, they’ve lost their mojo, which has led to a string of disinterested displays which culminated in a 5-1 hammering in Bochum last time out.

It’s not impossible that they’ll show up tonight, but I doubt it. You need a lot of energy to deal with Holstein Kiel, and Jahn Regensburg haven’t displayed any of it lately. I won’t deny that they have some very good midfielders in their squad that can make the difference here, and I’m specifically looking at Vrenezi, Stolze, Moritz, and George on that front. Furthermore, their only capable striker Albers is in a rich vein of form right now. He has weird spells where he’s either brilliant or atrocious; there’s no middle ground with the Dane. He’s on song right now though, and that could lead to the visitors scoring here.

As a collective though, this team has done nowhere near enough to impress me in 2021. I rate them as a very capable team; the most capable Jahn Regensburg I’ve seen, actually. However, they’ve also been the ones with the least consistency. I know they’ve had problems with injuries at the back this season but the team relinquishes control of games far too easily for my liking, and they’re simply not good enough in attack to allow that, yet have refused to address it.

All in all, I recognise that Jahn Regensburg can be a pesky team to beat, should they wish to be, but Holstein Kiel are on Cloud Nine right now, and are showing no signs whatsoever of coming down. Therefore, I trust in a confident, competent Holstein Kiel victory.

Verdict: Holstein Kiel to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 19/20.
