Today’s free tip is in the Brazilian Serie A encounter between Gremio and Corinthians.

Scolari was just getting his teeth into the Gremio role when Flamengo came along earlier this week and hammered them in the Copa do Brasil. That’s not a pleasure that is exclusively reserved for Gremio, to be fair – Flamengo pound on most Brazilian teams nowadays. Still, it’s shattered the fragile confidence of a struggling team, and now they’re hosting a rejuvenated Corinthians side. Suffice to say that I don’t like their chances.

A draw’s not impossible, obviously. These two teams are quite similar in general, and both defend first, and attack later. However, based on the way things are right now, I favour Corinthians. Gremio look stronger in defence – and Kannemann’s return from injury is not a coincidence on that front. They’re still grafting hard enough, and Scolari knows what he’s doing by now. Gremio will most likely come good to avoid the drop in due course. I’m still not convinced by them, though.

Gremio’s stars like Douglas Costa and Lucas Silva are letting them down. New signing Borja already has three in four, which is handy, but too many are passengers in this squad. If they all worked as intelligently and tirelessly as Diego Souza, Gremio would be in a far better place than they are right now. Because they don’t though, Gremio are struggling. I can’t see them hurting Corinthians here without being unpredictable, and most of their unpredictable players just aren’t interested right now. Therefore, barring inspired displays from newbies, I don’t think we’ll see a home win here.

Corinthians look very dangerous right now, which is nice. They’re the masters of turning up when it really doesn’t matter anymore, it seems. They’ve made two excellent captures in midfield lately, bringing Renato August and Giuliano back to Brazil, both of which are far too good for this level. Such players allow them to retain their usual cautious stance whilst also hurting teams because the range and precision of passing has improved immeasurably, not to mention Giuliano’s runs forward cause teams problems.

Now Cornithians are looking to sign Willian from Arsenal, which would be another terrific capture for them. Roger Guedes returned early from his sojourn to China too, although I doubt he will play here. All of those players supporting Luan and Jo? Corinthians would find winning games a lot easier than they currently do, although it’d still be utterly tragic that they don’t attack as much as they’re capable of. Nonetheless, better players have made Corinthians better at winning matches, hence being unbeaten in three, having won their last two games in a row.

Beating Ceara and Atletico Paranaense may look unimpressive on paper but they’re the kind of teams that Corinthians always struggle with because they always want it more than the Sao Paulo heavyweights. This renewed quality in the Corinthians squad has made it so they’re taking their chances better though, and that naturally makes them more confident. That in turn makes the team more effective all round, and with no real pressure because of their poor start to this campaign, it’s an ideal time to trust the visitors to do what they always should be capable of.

For me, Corinthians should not be underdogs here, hence my interest.

Verdict: Corinthians to win with draw no bet at evens.
