Today’s free tip is in the German Bundesliga 2 encounter between Dynamo Dresden and Nurnberg.

The odds for this game confuse me a little. I know Dynamo Dresden usually attract a good level of home support but Nurnberg don’t look like the kind of team to be rattled by it right now. Over the past two years, hell yes – they’d have fallen apart in minutes. Now, though? I don’t see it.

No Bundesliga 2 team has surprised me more than Nurnberg this season by the way they’ve acclimatised to things, despite losing some good players. They seem more unified now, and the lads they’ve brought in have done excellently. Schindler has sorted their defence out, a regular midfield diamond has stopped them from being overrun as easily as they were, Daehli makes things happen for them better than others have (except perhaps Hack, but they’re different kinds of players), and they’ve got a new weapon that nobody knows what to do against – Shuranov. This is suddenly a well-balanced, consistent team.

Entertaining? God, no – not at all! Nurnberg have taken great delight in sapping all of the fun out of football this season. Still, I think that their fans would find an agreeable outcome if it saw them promoted at the end of the road, which when compared to nearly being relegated for two seasons in a row, is certainly preferable. I actually feel like Nurnberg control games now. What happens is what they want to happen, and that’s a healthy way to play football, whether it appeases footballing romantics like myself or not.

They may not create as many chances as they’re capable of, Nurnberg, but they do create better chances – and they convert more of them too. As I said above, Shuranov is a wildcard; nobody knows how to cope with his speed and dribbling. If that should fail, big Schaffler is there to play more direct football. With Dovedan and Templemann especially effective at supporting attacks, lots of goals from set pieces, and a midfield that knows how to protect the back four, everything feels very efficient and smooth at Nurnberg right now. They may not win in Dresden today, but I don’t have a reason to believe that they’d lose.

They’ve certainly been better at home than on the road this season, Dynamo Dresden. They’ve done a lot better than I thought they would, given the squad they returned to the Bundesliga 2 with, which is ironically a lot worse than the squad they were relegated from it with. This one is a lot more close-knit though. You can almost see the Jahn Regensburg-esque togetherness and belief in each game, and I like that. If you’re going to play in a tough division without top players, then the next best thing is to have everybody on the same page – and Dynamo Dresden have that.

Not just that, but they’ve found a good goal-scorer in Daferner. They’re not going to be able to keep him, but for now he’s theirs. Morschel, Kade, and Akoto have also impressed. It’s all about the collective effort at this club though. As a unit, they’ve become annoying to deal with. They’ve got a good spread of speed and height, and lots of willing fighters. Without having anything special to call upon, they’ve still felled some pretty big trees already this season. Clearly, if you underestimate them, you’re in trouble.

Nurnberg haven’t underestimated any team this season though. They’ve gone all the way with each of them, toe-to-toe, giving little away. Dynamo Dresden have thrived this season by capitalising upon other teams’ mistakes. Well, Nurnberg don’t make many, if any. That’s why I don’t see this game ending in a home win. A draw is possible, sure, but the way Nurnberg find ways to score, even without creating a lot of chances, makes me think they’ll nick it.

Therefore, with draw no bet odds of 4/5 available on the away win, I’ve been tempted enough to get involved.

Verdict: Nurnberg to win with draw no bet at 4/5.
