Today’s free tip is in the Swiss Super League encounter between St. Gallen and Lausanne Sport.

All I can tell you about this game is that St. Gallen are playing weirdly well at the moment. If you apply logic to this game, you won’t fancy the home win, and under ordinary circumstances, nor would I.

These are not ordinary circumstances, however. St. Gallen enter this fixture on the back of completely outplaying – and beating – FC Basel away from home, and taking advantage of a lacklustre Young Boys Bern at home, winning 3-1. They done that with 75% of their back four being out, and with star players like Ruiz generally benched. All Zeidler has done is move Fazliji forward, Stillhart back, and introduced the likes of Schmidt and Diarrassouba. Somehow that’s bamboozled the rest of Swiss football, galvanised this massively under-strength group, and they’ve been performing really well!

Honestly, on paper, this is the weakest St. Gallen side of the season to date. However, it’s also the St. Gallen side that looks the most effective and wins the most games so there’s no sense applying any logic to it. Simply smile, nod, and accept that somehow this team is better without its best players. Youan looks inspired after his period on the bench, which is helpful, and their defenders have slotted in well too. I can’t see this lasting forever but for now, the mood at St. Gallen is really positive.

Subsequently, they’re hounding teams more, attempting more intricate moves, scoring more goals, and conceding less. It’s weirdly nice to see. I still don’t understand how it’s working for them because it just doesn’t make sense. Everything is going according to plan for St. Gallen though, which begs the question as to what will happen when Luchinger, Diakite, Stergiou, and Kempter return! It’s a nice problem to have, I suppose. Anyway, if they can outplay both of Switzerland’s top two teams, they can absolutely do the same at home against Lausanne Sport today.

The good news for St. Gallen is that Lausanne Sport appear very concerned about the Grippo situation. Before he played, their defence was atrocious. After he played, they looked rather composed at the back. Before the international break, he picked up an injury. The club haven’t said what it is – just that he’s ‘doubtful’ to feature at Kybunpark. However, in the meantime they’ve gone and signed Kone – another centre-back – on a free transfer, and he’s not joined to sit on the bench, so go figure there. I personally find it a touch distasteful on poor Sow, who has been marvellous for them this season, but now just about makes the bench, but there we are; that’s football. Anyway, I digress; if Grippo fails here, they’re not keeping St. Gallen out.

Borenovic has had to change things a lot this season but the current setup works, at least as well as it can do. They don’t have a striker because George isn’t in the correct shape, something the Serbian has spoken about extensively of late. That, plus the continued absence of Turkes, consistently leads to Lausanne Sport fielding fast midfielders in the striker role, which isn’t ideal because they’re not as clinical. That said, it sure as hell makes Lausanne Sport good at countering!

Despite industrious displays of late, they’re just not scoring enough goals though. They had chances against Lugano and Luzern, especially the latter, but didn’t take them. In other words, unless they’re up against a team that chaotically attacks them, they’re not going to do any damage in exchange. Despite their improvements over the past month or so – and there have been a lot of them – this is still a team that won’t pick up enough points because they’re not clinical finishers. That’s likely to hurt them against an overly confident St. Gallen today too.

At 4/5, I’m all over the home win.

Verdict: St. Gallen to win at 4/5.
