Athletic Club de Bilbao vs Almeria

Free

Today has a lot of games that I don’t like in the vast majority of the major leagues, most notably in Italy and Greece, so there aren’t many games I like. If you decide to try your hand at the likes of Serie A and the Super League then good luck to you because I certainly won’t be due to some very dubious results of late.

Today’s featured game is the Primera Liga game between Athletic Club de Bilbao anad Almeria. Both sides have played well of late but only Athletic have something left to play for with Almeria having prematurely staved off the threat of relegation this season from a realistic perspective although mathematically it’s still possible.

Athletic have been as strong as ever at home this season with nine wins in fourteen home games. They average scoring nearly two goals per home game and opposing sides often find trips to the Basque country naturally intimidating. Athletic lost their last match 4-1 at Barcelona, a result that can be understood even if it did flatter the hosts on that occasion. Athletic are unbeaten in their last seven home games in the Primera Liga, failing to win only once during that run despite hosting giants Real Madrid and rivals Osasuna. Athletic’s last home game was an epic encounter at home to semi-rivals Racing Santander 4-3. Athletic’s determination and potency impressed me during that game although their lack of defensive ability was as evident as ever, unfortunately.

Athletic actually have a very real chance of gaining a UEFA Champions League place for next season if you look at their remaining fixtures. They’ve got tough away games with Valencia, Real Madrid, and Osasuna remaining from which they’ll be lucky to take three points despite a convincing head-to-head record against Valencia and the class difference between themselves and Osasuna. However, they’ve got five home games left that are very much games that they can win, starting tonight, and they know. Caparros knows it and I expect to see his side highly motivated for the challenge as they can gain a valuable monetary boost and then finally sign the likes of Xabi Prieto to improve their squad – maybe even Joseba Llorente!

Visitors Almeria have been so much better in the second of half of this campaign in comparison to the first half of this campaign. They’ve only lost three games since January but it’s key to note that all three were on the road against giants Valencia CF, Sevilla CF, and also on their last trip to the Basque country to face Osasuna. Unfortunately for Almeria, two of those two defeats have been their last two away games in quick succession and the minnows have failed to score in either game so they look set to struggle against a potent Athletic side. I respect Almeria a lot for their battling displays and their strong home support but they’ve already lost nine out of fifteen away games this season and were annihlated 4-1 at home by Athletic earlier this season so I wouldn’t be surprised to see them blown away again tonight.

There should be plenty of cards in this game between two battling, physical sides. However, Almeria have looked shaky in recent times on the road and it’s understandable after such a great run of form that has pushed them to all but certain safety now. Their small squad is starting to look stretched whereas hosts Athletic are at virtually full-strength for this game and have been magnificent at home so I expect a solid home win tonight, particularly with Athletic having more motivation to win this game.

Incidentally, I’m sure it’s also not escaped the notice of the players or the fans that Almeria manager Juanma Lillo coached Real Sociedad last season – just food for thought…

Verdict: Athletic Club de Bilbao to win at 4/5.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Lanus vs Rosario Central – home win at 10/11.

Lanus have already won four out of six home games in the Primera Division this season and are finally establuishing a consistent run of form with four consecutive Primera Division wins. They’ve conceded just once during that run and have taken some strong momentum as a result of this form. Lanus have been some way from potent during this run but they’re in a frame of mind whereby they manage to score enough goals to win the game currently. When luck is on your side, it’s on your side, basically. It’s refreshing to see Lanus beginning to emulate their heroics in the Apertura this year. Lanus are flying high at the moment and it’d take a braver man than me to go against their workmanlike but effective displays of late.

Visitors Rosario Central have struggled this season, hence their position near the bottom of the Primera Division table. The predominant reason behind their lack of progress is that they’re not scoring goals as they’ve only lost six out of thirteen games despite being third from bottom in the table. Only San Lorenzo de Almagro and Atletico Tucuman have scored less goals than Rosario Central this season and Rosario are beginning to suffer because of this record. At the start of this campaign they were drawing instead of losing but they’ve now lost three out of their last five games, scoring in just two of those games. Rosario are lookine demoralised because of it and if Lanus get the first goal then I can’t see goal-shy Rosario breaking the Lanus defence to equalise.

Lanus won this fixture last season so they’re certainly capable of doing the same again. Lanus have to score the first goal as that should shatter a firm Rosario resistance as I can’t see the hosts scoring tonight. Either way, the odds are surprising as Lanus should be at least 4/6 for this game in my opinion.

Verdict: Lanus to win at 10/11.

Austria Vienna vs Sturm Graz – home win at 10/11.

Austria Vienna haven’t lost against Sturm Graz in their last five meetings at either ground. This record shows that Sturm Graz, as ever, are still a little way behind the two Vienna clubs and Salzburg in the Austrian rankings.

Austria Vienna have won ten out of fourteen home games this season and have averaged scoring nearly two goals per game. Only Salzburg have conceded less goals at home than today’s hosts, which has been their predominant strength this season and also in recent games where they’ve gone unbeaten in four games, conceding just once along the way and that was against reigning champions Salzburg. Austria Vienna have won their last three games consecutively 1-0 and hav gained substantial momentum from this run. They’ve got the ability to win this game as have for two years running and their home advantage should ensure it happens although they’ll still need a big performance from experienced playmaker Milenko Acimovic, as ever.

Visitors Sturm Graz won their last away game at SV Kapfenberg in convincing fashion but their previous away game was a 3-0 battering at Salzburg, which again shows the gulf between themselves and the other three sides in the “big four” of Austria. Sturm Graz were disappointing during their 1-1 draw at home to SV Kapfenberg last match and that will have affected their confidence ahead of this game. Sturm Graz have only lost four away games this season but when you consider that those four games were against Salzburg (twice), Rapid Vienna, and today’s hosts Austria Vienna, the gulf becomes a lot clearer to see. It takes a good display from Sturm Graz to take points off the other three sides in the “big four” and they frankly don’t look capable of producing the necessary performance to take anything from this game today.

Although I do class Sturm Graz as part of the “big four” in Austria, I think that the bookies have underestimated Austria Vienna here. The hosts really should be 4/6 for this game so I’ll back them all day long whilst they’re above those odds.

Verdict: Austria Vienna to win at 10/11.

Mlada Boleslav vs Jablonec – home win at 5/4.

This is a fairly risky call given the impressive displays from Jablonec this season and the haphazard displays of Mlada Boleslav. However, Mlada are the bigger of these two sides and the form tables have turned so I feel it’s worth a punt today on the home win.

Mlada Boleslav have won three consecutive games ahead of this encounter and have won some tough games along the way too, winning at Sigma Olomouc and Brno respectively whilst beating a compact Viktoria Plzen comfortably 4-0 in between those two games. Mlada have scored nine times during those three games – an average of three goals per game – so they’re absolutely on fire at the moment. They’ve already won six out of eleven home games in the Gambrinus Liga this season and if their current form continues then I expect that record to get even better as the season goes on.

Jablonec and their limited squad have started to look stretched and it’s no surprise as they’re competing for the Ondrasovka Cup at the same time as the Gambrinus Liga. They’ve only won once on the road in the Gambrinus Liga since returning from the winter break, losing twice against Banik Ostrava and Slovan Liberec respectively. The problem has been for Jablonec that they’ve conceded eight goals during those two defeats which is more than half their away goals conceded in the Gambrinus Liga this season so I think it’s a fair observation to say that they’re not doing enough defensively at the moment. They’ve knocked Teplice out of the cup lately but those two games have clogged up their match schedule and I think we’ll see reprcussions of it today as they face a rejuvenated Mlada Boleslav side.

Mlada Boleslav have had some poor results against Jablonec in recent times but I feel today is the day that they turn that around at generous odds of 5/4 as they’re scoring goals for fun and Jablonec are conceding a lot at the moment.

Verdict: Mlada Boleslav to win at 5/4

Esbjerg vs Midtylland – away win at 13/8.

Esbjerg have been atrocious lately with four defeats in their last five games, drawing the other game 0-0 last match against OB Odense. They’re over-achieved so far this season and it’s beginning to show with Esbjerg managing to score just once during those five games but managing to concede eleven times – over two goals per game on average. Esbjerg won’t be looking forward to this game much either having lost 3-0 at Midtylland earlier this season and having been beaten here 5-0 by Midtylland earlier this season in the Landspokal Cup. I suspect Esbjerg may just get a lesson in quality today as they’re facing a rejuvenated and talented Midtylland side.

Midtylland are in inspired form currently with no defeats in eight games in all competitions. Anyone who follows the Superligaen will tell you that they’ve always been capable of such a run; they’ve simply had a poor season by their standards. However, they’re back in the saddle now with six wins during those eight games, including some impressive wins at the likes of OB Odense along the way. They impressed me immensely by winning their last Superligaen game at SonderjyskE, who are a nightmare side to break down defensively but Midtylland did it and did it well! Midtylland have strong momentum entering this game as a result of such a great run and I expect them to continue that against a demoralised Esbjerg today at what can only be described as very generous odds.

Verdict: Midtylland to win at 13/8.

Randers vs FC Copenhagen – lay FC Copenhagen at 13/10.

Now these are some interesting odds…

It seems that the bookies have decided that Randers’ recent excellent run is nothing more than fortune and that they’re a very poor side. I think this assessment is somewhat harsh on a Randers side that I consider to be good enough to be in the top five in the Superligaen and I’m hoping they demonstrate that today. They’re unbeaten in the seven games that they’ve played since returning from the winter break and have claimed two out of three home wins along the way. FC Copenhagen have only won here once in their last three visits and they certainly won’t relish playing a driven Randers side today.

I don’t need to tell you all how good FC Copenhagen are or how good they can be – their record speaks for itself. However, I don’t envision them having it all their own way today as they’re facing a difficult Randers side so I think 8/15 on the away win is somewhat insulting for Randers and there appears to be value in laying FC Copenhagen today.

Verdict: Lay FC Copenhagen at 13/10.

OB Odense vs Brondby – lay OB Odense at 4/5.

OB Odense should never be considered as strong favourites for any game without quintessential midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba. They simply don’t play well without him and that’s been more than evident lately with some poor results to prove my point. This of course furthers my other point that OB Odense aren’t as good as the majority believe that they are as they’re simply hard-workers with some quality. The loss of Djemba-Djemba is hefty for OB Odense and I don’t see why the game against Brondby should be exempt from their ruling of “We’re playing shit without Djemba-Djemba against anyone” so I suspect they’ll have a tough game today. Brondby have struggled since returning from the winter break and eventually sacked their manager but their replacement has done a decent job thus far. They’ve played well enough to win at SonderjyskE, they were unfortunate to not beat Silkeborg in their 2-2 draw, and they were comfortable in their away win at HB Koge last match so Brondby are playing well on the sly. Underestimating Brondby is foolish at the best of times but the bookies appear to have done so readily today and I can’t quite work out why.

As some final food for thought, consider that OB Odense have hosted Brondby in various competitions over the past two-three years but have never scored against them at home in any of those competitions, losing three times and drawing twice. Then we can see just how the bookies could be making a big mistake here today…

Verdict: Lay OB Odense at 4/5.

Olympique Lyonnais vs LOSC Lille – home win at 4/5.

Victory over Girondins de Bordeaux (well, progression to the next stage at least!) in the UEFA Champions League will have given Lyon a timely morale boost ahead of their final push for the Ligue 1 title that they feel is rightfully theirs. They’ve not been superb this season as their new signings are yet to gel fully but they have been effective as nine wins in fifteen home games in Ligue 1 indicates. Lyon have won their last two Ligue 1 games consecutively, a run which includes a very impressive win at a difficult Stade Rennais despite trailing during that game so it’s yet another priceless result that is sure to have buoyed Lyon ahead of today’s game.

Lille have had a great season but are now struggling with their limited squad size, particularly away from home. They’ve lost twice and drawn once in their last three away games in Ligue 1, losing their most recent game at rivals Valenciennes, so Lille will be a bit demoralised too. They’re a gritty side that are hard to beat but ultimately they don’t travel well and don’t score enough on the road so they should really struggle in this game today, particularly with little momentum to boost them.

Lyon don’t have a good head-to-head record against Lille so do approach with caution. However, Lyon need three points today and they’re playing well enough to get them so the home win at 4/5 should be good value tonight.

Verdict: Olympique Lyonnais to win at 4/5.

Stromsgodset vs Sandefjord – home win at 4/5.

Stromsgodset have made a much-needed good start to the Eliteserien this season with just one defeat in four games, winning twice along the way. They’ve won both home games whilst scoring four times and conceding just once so they’re yet again turning their ground into a fortress. They’ve overcome a difficult Viking Stavanger side here in their last home game which will further boost their confidence ahead of this game so I expect a good display from them again today. Their 3-0 defeat at Rosenborg BK last match wasn’t unexpected as Stromsgodset don’t travel well and Rosenborg BK are fortunate awesome in this division so I don’t expect Stromsgodset to be crying after their result. They’re back in Drammen where they belong for this game and should make it count against their frankly inferior opponents.

Sandefjord enjoy upsetting the odds, as they did so often last season. However, they’re looking a tad predictable this season and have lost their surprise element so I expect them to struggle this year. They’ve already lost their two away games in the Eliteserien this season and have looked incredibly unreliable in defence where they’ve already leaked seven goals during those four games so Sandefjord should struggle against what I can only describe as a potent Stromsgodset side today. Sandefjord aren’t short on goalscoring themselves but the fact that they keep losing on the road will be on their minds and the fact that they’re facing arguably the toughest trip in the Eliteserien today won’t sit well with them either.

I expect a full-blooded display from both sides but Stromsgodset should have too much at home for lowly Sandefjord at generous odds of 4/5.

Verdict: Stromsgodset to win at 4/5.
