Athletic Club de Bilbao vs Osasuna

Free

Today’s featured game is the Basque derby between Athletic Club de Bilbao and Osasuna. It’s not the main derby in the Basque country – you’ll see that particular bloodbath next weekend – but it’s a derby nonetheless and thus should be approached with caution.

However, Athletic have been the dominant side out of these two for a long time now and look set to continue to it too. Indeed, Osauna have been something of a “feeder” club to Athletic in recent years with Orbaiz and Martinez just two of the various players that have arrived at Bilbao from their local rivals. If only Bilbao had signed Azpilicueta and Monreal in summer then they’d be covered everywhere! However, Azpilicueta departed Spain to play for Olympique de Marseille and Monreal has elected to stay with Osasuna rather than move to one of the many clubs he was linked with in summer.

Athletic are unquestionably the better of these two sides too. You can always tell which Basque sides are the best because talented Basque strikers are beyond rare and the best clubs in that region have the best strikers, simply put. You can count the number of good Basque strikers over the past ten years on one hand – Fernando Llorente, Joseba Llorente, Aritz Aduriz, and Ismael Urzaiz, three of which have played for Athletic. It’s therefore no surprise that both Osasuna, Real Sociedad, and Deportivo Alaves (the other big Basque clubs) all relaxed their “Basque only” policy to basically allow whoever they wanted in. Athletic fans voted in majority that they’d rather be relegated because of a lack of local talent rather than allow non-Basque players to play for them, which shows why Basque derbies are often hotly-contested, moreso than the average derby.

Despite their relaxed policy, Osasuna have had big problems in front of goal. Indeed, for the past two seasons, only experienced Uruguayan striker Walter Pandiani has been scoring goals consistently for them and that really is a big problem. Osasuna especially find games hard away from home due to not scoring goals and although their defence is often hard to breach, if you don’t score goals then you’re not a great threat so I think we’ll see Osasuna struggle here (as usual) because Bilbao will almost certainly score.

Incidentally, Pandiani has been included in the Osasuna squad although he’s still not fit. This demonstrates just how much Osasuna need him and I think he’ll play too. The return of Monreal at left-back for Osasuna is essential as Markel Susaeta has been immense for Bilbao on the wing in recent weeks but he’s been carrying a knock lately so a good left-back like Monreal may be able to quell Bilbao down that side. However, Muniain has shaken off a knock and will most likely carry Bilbao’s attack down the left, which is where Osasuna are vulnerable. Crosses into the box will be fiercely contested between Llorente and Flano, both of which are strong in the air, but Llorente has been immense this season and really should score at least one of the chances that will inevitably come his way.

The stage is set – can Bilbao deliver? The omens look good. They’ve won this fixture 2-0 for three consecutive seasons so the scoreline bet has to be worthy of consideration here. Bilbao have won four out of six home games in the Primera Liga this season with only giants Atletico Madrid and Barcelona having won at San Mames. In their other four games, only Real Zaragoza have even scored here with Bilbao strolling to victory in their other games, even when playing with nine men against relegation-threatened Almeria! Helpfully, Osasuna have lost five out of six on the road this season whilst averaging conceding nearly two goals per away game and whilst scoring just once, thus reinforcing my earlier point about Osasuna relying far too heavily on Pandiani. Osasuna don’t enjoy trips here, generally speaking, and I don’t think that mentality will change today.

Bilbao welcome back Amorebieta and San Jose’s budding partnership in the centre of defence so Pandiani’s threat should be limited, although a good striker’s threat is never totally extinguished so Bilbao will have to be careful here. Miguel Flano has to be marked from set pieces too but aside from that, this game is Bilbao’s to lose. They have more options, better players, and a very strong home support so I don’t see them stumbling here. Odds of just over 1/2 on the home win are probably fair but they don’t interest me, not when you can get the home win without an away goal at generous odds of 7/4. You could even handicap Bilbao here as they do tend to beat Osasuna quite convincingly. However, for me, the best bet in this game is backing the hosts to win without conceding at 7/4.

Squads:

Athletic:

GK – Gorka, Raul
DF – Koikili, Amorebieta, San Jose, Iraola, Aurtenexte,
MF – Iturraspe, Gabilondo, Muniain, Susaeta, Martinez, Gurpegi, Orbaiz, Lopez
A – Toquero, Llorente, Velez

Osasuna:

GK – Riesgo, Ricardo
DF – Damia, Josetxo, Flano, Monreal, Nelson, Oier, Sergio
MF – Camunas, Juanfran, Masoud, Nekounam, Punal, Soriano, Vadocz
A – Lekic, Pandiani

Verdict: Athletic Club de Bilbao to win to nil at 7/4.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Corinthians vs Vasco da Gama – home win with -1.5 goal handicap at 11/10.

I’m as big an advocate of Vasco da Gama as they come but this Vasco side is not playing well. To be honest, I think it’s fair enough that they’re not playing well. They’ve played with such an intensity under Gusmao due to the desperate fight against relegation that the squad is tired. Vasco have successfully avoided relegation (barring a miracle!) and they know it; their performance are jaded and they lack organisation, two things that you can never associate with a Gusmao side. Therefore, this game is Corinthians’ to do with as they wish, especially as Vasco da Gama hate Fluminense, who are Corinthians’ title rivals so I don’t expect much resistance here. Two games remain in Serie A and Corinthians need to win them both, starting tonight. They’ve won eleven out of eighteen at home already this season whilst averaging scoring nearly two goals per game so the handicap bet is an option here. It also aids my bet that Corinthians are playing well at a key stage of the season with no defeats in seven consecutive games, winning four of them along the way. Corinthians have won three consecutive home games, beating bitter rivals Palmeiras, title rivals, Cruzeiro, and relegation battlers Avai so confidence is high and it needs to be for such a key game too. Vasco are not a side that concedes goals easily, hence the decent odds, but with Vasco having nothing to play for (and even less to try for, if you know what I mean!) I have to fancy in-form Corinthians to win this game by two goals or more at 11/10.

Verdict: Corinthians to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 11/10.

Kaliakra vs Litex Lovech – away win to nil at 20/21.

This bet really speaks for itself. Newly-promoted Kaliakra are hosting giants Litex Lovech, which in itself points to the away win. Kalikra are the joint-lowest scoring side in the A PFG; Litex Lovech boast the second-best defensive record in the division. Kaliakra have scored seven times in six home games, four of which were at home to Cherno More Varna last match, who are notoriously poor travellers. Kaliakra have failed to score in three of their home games this season, including games against fellow newly-promoted side Akademik Sofia and Pirin Blagoevgrad. Kaliakra have proven that they’re not easy to beat in the A PFG at home but they’re facing what is currently the best side in Bulgaria and Litex are playing well enough to prove it today. Litex have won three times and drawn three times on the road in the A PFG this season, which is a fairly mixed record. However, Litex have won eight consecutive games leading into this one, which gives them a massive momentum boost. The only side to score against Litex in five consecutive A PFG games was bitter title rivals Levski Sofia and Litex haven’t conceded in three consecutive away games leading into this game.

The above statistics will point to the away win, something which I agree whole-heartedly with. However, why take the away win at 2/5 when you can take Litex to win without conceding at 20/21? It’s not a dead cert because sides always pick up their game to play the giants of each division but Litex are a lot better than Kaliakra and should really demonstrate that today by winning this game without conceding.

Verdict: Litex Lovech to win to nil at 20/21.

AEK Larnaca vs Anorthosis Famagusta – home win with draw no bet at 5/4.

Anorthosis Famagusta are one of the “big three” in Cyprus but they’re still over-priced here. They’ve not played well at all in this campaign and luck has finally deserted them with no league wins for five consecutive games, losing back-to-back games at bitter rivals Omonia Nicosia and at home against Apollon Limassol in the derby last time out so morale is naturally lessened, irrespective of their cup win mid-week. Anorthosis’ problem is not only how well they’re not playing but how badly they’re defending. They’ve only won twice on the road this season – one was against Doxa, who play their home games at Anorthosis’ ground for the season (which ended 2-3) and the other was against rock-bottom AEL Limassol. If Anorthosis faced any kind of organised side (i.e. Doxa, Enosis Neon Paralimni) then they struggle because they’re not the side that Temur Ketsbaia built a couple of years ago anymore. They’re a lot more susceptible than title rivals APOEL Nicosia and Omonia Nicosia and it’s showing too. Unfortunately for Anorthosis, they’re facing one of the success stories of the season today – newly-promoted AEK Larnaca. The recruitment of Jordi Cruyff has proved invaluable for the hosts as he’s coaxed some old Dutch players to play for AEK and they look good for it too. There’s still work to be done for the hosts but they’re scoring goals and playing good attacking football so I fancy them to really rattle an out-of-form Anorthosis today, especially on the back of three consecutive Division 1 victories.

Anorthosis are obviously the better of these two sides nowadays but the quality gap isn’t as big as the odds suggest, in my opinion. I fancy AEK to cause problems in this game and backing them to win the game with draw no bet cover at 5/4 looks far too generous to ignore today.

Verdict: AEK Larnaca to win with draw no bet at 5/4.

Brondby vs OB Odense – over 2.5 goals at 9/10.

The last three meetings between these two sides whilst playing at Brondby’s ground have all gone over 2.5 goals as the power has shifted in the Superligaen from Brondby to OB Odense, although obviously both sides are still behind FC Copenhagen. OB Odense boast a stronger attack than Brondby but Brondby boast a better defence. However, with both sides playing well and seeking points in the Superligaen, I’m anticipating a good game here. Brondby haven’t beaten OB Odense at home for some years and although OB’s defence is bad enough for that to happen, I don’t think it will today. The majority of OB’s problems with the manager etc. in the past few weeks is behind them now; they’re getting back to their best. Djemba-Djemba staying was a good move for OB as he’s very much integral to their play but even he can’t help their defensive issues. Eight out of OB’s last nine Superligaen games have gone over 2.5 goals and seven out of eight Superligaen away games have gone over 2.5 goals for OB Odense too, thus re-affirming my point about their talented attack but indept defence. You’d think that Brondby would look to capitalise on that today but their last five games have gone over 2.5 goals because their defence has been shaky too so I anticipate a fairly amusing and goal-filled game here. Brondby and OB have already drawn 2-2 here earlier this season and the same scoreline today wouldn’t surprise me at all. If I had to choose then I’d offer the advantage to OB but I’d avoid the 1×2 market between these two sides because it’s a tough one. For me, the value lies in over 2.5 goals between two good attacking sides, especially with defending something that has been totally ignored by both sides in the past few weeks!

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 9/10.

Newcastle United vs Chelsea – both sides to score at 4/5.

As a Manchester United fan myself, I’m obviously hopeful that Newcastle United will get something here. As a professional on this site, I’m realistic enough to accept that Chelsea could and really should win this game. However, my angle to approach this game today is on the goals front rather than the 1×2 market.

Why? Well, Chelsea’s defensive problems of late are notorious for anyone with the capacity to read anything remotely sport related in the English media in the past few weeks. Chelsea’s need is so bad for centre-backs that they’ve rushed centre-back Alex back into the team some six weeks ahead of his recovery from injury and it’s a real problem for them, naturally. Chelsea played well against Birmingham City and I’d even say that they dominated the game but the English Premier League is a harsh and unforgiving league. One mistake in defence, Lee Bowyer slipped in and scored, and that has cost Chelsea potentially valuable points. Chelsea’s defensive issues have not improved greatly in terms of who can feature today so I expect burly Andy Carroll in attack for Newcastle to do a lot of damage today and ultimately either create or score a goal. Newcastle have defensive issues of their own without Argentinian international Coloccini to organise the back four as he’s suspended so we should see a fairly goal-filled game today with Chelsea boasting a superior strike force but both sides showing obvious defensive problems in recent times. Over 2.5 goals is a very real possibility in this game but backing both sides to score at 4/5 really appeals to me today if Carroll plays as well in this game as he has for the start of this season.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 4/5.

VVV Venlo vs AFC Ajax Amsterdam – away win with -1.5 handicap at evens.

This is easily my boldest call of the day!

Everyone else is jumping on VVV Venlo on the handicap here and I just sit back and wonder why that is. Ok – Ajax have lost star striker Suarez to suspension until February next year (for domestic games at least) because of his stupid antics against PSV Eindhoven. Ajax have suffered some demoralising results of late too, losing twice and drawing once in their past three Eredivisie games, failing to score in any of those games. With the above in mind, I can understand why people would jump on VVV here.

However, I’m going in the opposite direction and backing Ajax on the handicap. I’d quickly point out that Ajax’s poor displays have come against local rivals ADO Den Haag (that game was ADO’s cup final), bitter rivals PSV Eindhoven (anything can happen in derbies), and AZ Alkmaar (hard side to score against on their day). VVV cannot bring to this game what any of the afore-mentioned sides did. Indeed, the reason VVV are fighting relegation is because they’re not a good side. Keisuke Honda was this side until he left and ever since he’s left, they’ve been on a slippery slope downwards. Indeed, VVV have already lost five out of seven Eredivisie games at home this season whilst averaging conceding over two goals per home game whereas nobody has scored more away goals in the Eredivisie this season than Ajax with an average of over two goals scored per away game. Ajax’s defence is shaky, certainly, but so is VVV’s attack. Ajax will of course miss Suarez and truth be told, they’ve relied on him far too much this season. However, are people seriously suggesting that the sole difference between VVV and Ajax is Luis Suarez? There’s a whole world of difference between these two sides in terms of quality and I think Ajax have got more than enough quality at their disposal to win this game, and to win it convincingly too. All bad runs come to an end and I personally feel that Ajax will be quite relieved to face little VVV today to try and get themselves back on the map.

Rumour has it that Moroccan striker El Hamdaoui is injured for this game but I personally believe this to be fabrication until it’s confirmed by the club as the media will say anything nowadays to worsen a “crisis”. Mido is a definite absentee but he’s not a big loss for Ajax as he’s barely featured for them since his return to the club. That does limit Ajax’s options in attack, of course. Let’s not forget that captain and centre-back Paauwe for VVV misses this game through suspension, however, so VVV’s defence is very much vulnerable here. I honestly feel that Ajax miss winger Lodeiro more than anyone, who is sadly out with a long-term injury – he’s a very gifted player and makes things happen for Ajax. Nonetheless, they have some very good players here and should be able to expose a fragile VVV defence in this game without any great ceremony.

Ajax played VVV twice last season – they won 7-0 at home and 0-4 away. This is not an identical Ajax side but it’s not an identical VVV side as both sides have lost players over the summer. However, the quality gap is still large and although Ajax’s weak defending does concern me, I still think evens is too big on Ajax to beat the -1.5 goal handicap here so that’s my call.

Verdict: AFC Ajax Amsterdam to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at evens.

Polonia Warsaw vs Wisla Krakow – away win with draw no bet at 4/5.

Polonia Warsaw’s chairman is in a very bad position now as he seems to be totally overruling anyone who he employs at the club to manage the team. Wojciechowski has tried changing managers, signing some of the best and most promising Ekstraklasa players, and even freezing player wages in a desperate attempt to make Polonia Warsaw the immediate best side in Poland. However, we all know that it doesn’t work like that in any league and unsurprisingly it’s not working here either. The sacking of Bakero was a colossal joke; he did miracles with this club and they won’t find a better manager than him to take charge of what is rapidly becoming a joke club. The new manager is already under pressure because he’s not guided Polonia to 10-0 wins in every game and it’s basically creating a ludicrous scenario here to which there is no solution other than for the chairman to back off or to leave the club to resolve the problems. The lack of focus from the players is there for all to see in recent games, most notably against GKS Belchatow in their 3-2 defeat, and although Polonia undeniably have some very good players, I cannot take them seriously with such an idiot in charge behind the scenes.

Wisla Krakow, however, I can take very seriously indeed. Dutch manager Maaskant has got them playing very efficiently indeed with three consecutive wins and three consecutive clean sheets to boot, including a 4-0 win against bitter rivals Legia Warsaw. Wisla are starting to look assured again and that’s a pleasing sign after such a disheartening start to their season. Pawel Brozek is looking in good form and if Wisla give him the chances that he craves then I’m sure he’ll take them. If Wisla adhere to Maaskant’s tactics in this game then they really should make this a fourth consecutive win.

Wisla have beaten Polonia on all four occasions since Polonia were promoted a few years ago and Polonia have failed to score in both games against Wisla that were played in Warsaw. Admittedly, this Polonia is a very different side to the one that Wisla faced a couple of years ago but big names don’t make a side necessarily good – it makes them have more individual talent. Wisla look a stronger united force than Polonia and to be blunt, I fancy them to win this one today. The outright away win is tempting but with the quality at Polonia’s disposal, I’m covering my selection with draw no bet as I’d be surprised to see Wisla lose this one.

Absentees – Polonia miss defender Jodlowiec (suspension), striker Ebi Smolarek (injury), and have a doubt over goalkeeper Przyrowski. Wisla have doubts over Gargula, Boukhari, and Sobolewski for this game.

Verdict: Wisla Krakow to win with draw no bet at 4/5.

Portimonense vs Uniao de Leiria  – home win with draw no bet at evens.

This is a bold call but it interests me immensely because of one man; Renatinho. The Brazilian attacker absolutely ran the show for J-League side Kawasaki Frontale before newly-promoted Portimonense brought him to the Liga Sagres and he’s impressed whenever he’s played for his new club. I think he’ll be moving on to one of the bigger clubs in Portugal before the start of next season but that’s a discussion for another time.

Renatinho brings to Portimonense a classy edge that they tend to lack without him. He scores, he creates chances, he can beat a man, and he can pass a ball. I hate to appear dismissive of the Liga Sagres but the number of players in this division that are devoid of such abilities are innumerate outside the bigger clubs. It’s players like that which win games and I think he’s good enough to give them a win today too. It’s no coincidence that Portimonense have looked good at home lately and that Renatinho has bagged in three consecutive home games as he seeks to single-handedly drag this side out of the relegation mire. I don’t know if he’s good enough to manage that much but he’s certainly good enough to give the hosts a bit of much needed quality here. Portimonense have scored four times in their last three home games in all competitions so they’re not playing as badly as their league placing would suggest. This is very much a six-pointer so the hosts will be up for the game. Leiria are unbeaten in three games, which will naturally make them a more stubborn opponent than usual, so a draw is obviously a possibility here. However, Leiria’s weakness is not scoring goals on the road. Indeed, they’ve failed to score in three out of their five away games in the Liga Sagres this season and although Portimonense aren’t great in defence, the impotent ways of Leiria are comforting as Portimonense need all the help they can get to claim three points in this game.

Either way, pricing Portimonense at 7/4 to win this game looks far too long to me. Leiria can defend well but they’re not a great attacking side. Portimonense have found a new hero, a new champion, someone who can win games for them and I think this is very much a game that the hosts can win and let’s face it – they need to starting picking up points fast. Therefore, my call for this game is a home win with draw no bet cover at evens as the odds look too generous to me.

Verdict: Portimonense to win with draw no bet at evens.
