As much as I like how Sevilla CF conduct their transfer business, I don’t think they’re good enough to get a result against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano today. It’s a bold statement, perhaps, but I believe it to be true.

Atletico Madrid may have a transfer ban but I believe Simeone is keen on player loyalty and continuity anyway so I don’t think they’d make big changes to their squad even if they could sign players. Therefore, they have a tremendously settled and familiar squad at the moment and that fans love because they’ve all stuck around. Nobody has jumped ship because of their ban, and that makes the bond between everybody even stronger, hence Atletico Madrid being so damn hard to beat.

They’ve lots of quality and lots of experience in their squad, which helps. They’ve got a lethal centre-back pairing of players that love to wind their opponents up whilst also defending well, which is good. They’ve got solid full-backs who are as good at getting forward as they are at defending. They’ve got lethal match-winners like Griezmann, Saul Niguez, Gameiro, Koke, Ferreira-Carrasco, and Correa in their squad to win them games. They’re fast on the break. They’re strong in the middle. They’ve got a safe pair of hands between the sticks. This is a very settled, motivated, and well-organised Atletico Madrid team that will be close to impossible for most European teams to actually beat this season. Let’s not forget that they’ll be able to field Diego Costa and Vitolo in January, too, not to mention Arda Turan if the rumour mill turns out to be correct.

Still, they’re the kings of 1-0 wins so why handicap them here? One reason – their opponents. Atletico Madrid’s biggest struggles come when they’ve got to break teams down that bunker up against them. They hate that. They much prefer to counter-attack with pace, which they’re seldom afforded the opportunity to do nowadays. However, I believe they’ll get the chance to do that today because Sevilla CF are an attacking side. They may not start the game that way, but they’re going to concede at some stage and then Atletico Madrid will be able to break against them and finish the job off. That’s my viewpoint here.

Sevilla CF have a good manager in Berizzo and lots of good players have arrived at the club but it takes time to integrate everybody. Their form guide is more impressive than their recent displays have been, in my opinion. They’ve not played particularly well this season and although I admire their newly-discovered patience, it’s not going by unnoticed that they’re giving a lot of chances away. Now, Girona, Getafe, and Eibar may not take such chances but Atletico Madrid will, and falling behind against them is absolutely fatal, particularly in their new stadium where they’re desperate to impress after a struggle against Malaga CF in their opening Wanda Metropolitano game.

Again, Sevilla CF made good signings to replace the players that left. They’ve got a really good balance to their team, for a change. I don’t see a natural poacher up front, which is a concern, but the likes of Nolito, Ben Yedder, and Muriel should be able to balance goals out between them this season, and Banega, Vazquez, Ganso, and Navas can all contribute too. So, yes – I like where Berizzo’s boys are at. I like what they’ve done to solve long-term problems. I think they’ll do well for as long as they keep things as they are but they need more time before they can challenge the likes of Atletico Madrid on their own patch, which they’ve simply not had yet. I don’t fancy their chances here.

Sevilla CF have not won against Atletico Madrid in the nation’s capital since 2010. They’ve lost two out of their last three visits, conceded seven goals in the process, and have generally been very frustrated by an incredibly solid tactical unit. I expect more of the same today.

Verdict: Atletico Madrid to beat the -1 Asian Handicap at 107/100.
