Today’s secondary featured game is the Bosnia-Herzegovina U21 vs San Marino U21 game in Sarajevo.

Bosnia-Herzegovina enter this game knowing that they really do need a win to give themselves a chance of making the UEFA European U21 Championships. They’re three points clear of third-place Greece with a game in hand, which looks rosy on paper. However, considering that Bosnia’s next game is at home against Greece and the following game is at home against group winners Germany, who have won every game thus far, this game looks to be very important indeed for the Bosnians. That way, a draw against Greece would be enough to see them go through. If the worst comes to the worst, however, and Bosnia lose against Greece, then their goal difference is going to become very important indeed as Germany are likely to win at Bosnia whether they need to or not, such is their nature. That makes me think that the Bosnians will take this game just as seriously as they did against Belarus lately, running out 3-0 winners against their difficult opponents. Bosnia have a pretty decent U21 side, all things considered. Vojvodina Novi Sad attacker Bilbija is the heartbeat of the team and if Bosnia are to beat the handicap today then he’ll play a big part in it, I’m sure. Visca of Istanbul BB, Zahirovic of Spartak Nal’chik, and even late bloomer Duric of Parma all have a good level of ability when compared to the more average players that Bosnia have so I think they’ve got more in the tank here than they let on. Their performances are usually impressive from what I have seen and they tend to put a lot of hard work into their games. There’s a good level of experience in this U21 side, especially in defence, so I do think that the Bosnians will do their job efficiently and impressively today against their inferior opponents.

Of course, everyone is going to be terrified of taking this tip following San Marino’s 0-0 draw at home against Greece a few days ago. They are improving as a footballing nation, San Marino, and it’s in their home form when they did tend to show it. I mean, only Germany have battered them in San Marino this season with everyone else really needing to grind out the wins at San Marino. Most of them got that killer first goal, however, and that was usually enough. Greece surprisingly didn’t get that goal, which puzzled me as I rate this particular crop of Greek youngsters rather highly. Still, these things can happen and San Marino’s hard work paid off with their first point of the group. Away from home, however, it’s still a huge learning curve, hence them losing all of their away games in this group. They’ve been beaten the three goals or more in nine out of their last ten away games – competitive games, that is – and they’ve not scored in any of those games. It’s generally down to the home side as to what the scoreline is and a determined and potent side such as Bosnia really should take the San Marinese apart here. I mean, hell – only two of their players actually play outside of San Marino, just to give you an idea of what level they’re currently at.

Therefore, I’m left with the tempting odds of evens on Bosnia beating the -2.5 handicap. Bosnia have to be motivated for this game as they need to win it and they beat a side two or three times better at defending than San Marino are in their last game. As long as the hosts apply themselves properly here, they should have no difficulty in covering the handicap today.

Verdict: Bosnia-Herzegovina U21 to beat the -2.5 handicap at evens.
