Today’s secondary featured game is the English Premier League match between Chelsea and Liverpool. This game has attracted a lot of hype due to the transfer of Spain’s star striker Fernando Torres from Liverpool to Chelsea but this is also quite an important game in Premier League terms too so we should see a decent game here.

Chelsea have struggled this season as they’ve been caught out, basically. They’ve not had the necessary depth to cope with the absences that they’ve had and they don’t have the emerging talent coming through that they were supposed to have, hence Abramovich sacking Frank Arnesen. Instead, Chelsea have been forced into splashing the cash to bring in Torres from Liverpool and Luiz from SL Benfica to boost their attack and defence respectively. A lot of people criticise it but I think the signing of Torres is a great move because he’s a world-class striker and Chelsea’s forwards aren’t getting any younger. I think the fee is fair enough too, by contrast, so Chelsea look to have a good signing here. Luiz – I’m not massively convinced that he’ll make it in the Premier League but time will tell, I suppose. Nonetheless, the addition of Torres to this enthused Chelsea side could prove to be a powerful move in the title race as Chelsea continue to go from strength to strength. My view is to forget the league table here; this title will be between Manchester United and Chelsea and both sides are now starting to warm up so it should get quite interesting.

Chelsea’s form of late has been immaculate with an excellent 2-4 win at a difficult Sunderland side emphasising their belief and finesse. The 7-0 win against Ipswich Town was the much-needed catalyst for this good run of form and since then Chelsea have won three out of four games, scoring an impressive eleven times along the way and disposing of solid defensive sides as if they weren’t there. Lampard is getting back to his best and that’s instrumental for Chelsea, naturally. With him creating the chances, Essien doing the running, and a trio of strikers that most sides would kill to have in their team, you have to feel that Chelsea are a very strong side again now and it’d be a fool who writes them off from this season’s title race, in my view.

Liverpool have also been quite smart in this whole affair, I think. They’ve got a good price for Torres on the basis that he wanted to leave the club either way (which can and has caused problems for clubs in the past, the most recent example of which is the transfer of Ba away from Hoffenheim) and it’s allowed them to bring in other players instead. Liverpool knew that they couldn’t replace the quality of Torres but what they have done is rather astute by bringing in an extremely promising target man in Andy Carroll and a very clever strike partner in Luis Suarez. For me, these two will be dynamite together after a bit of time and from that perspectve, Liverpool have done well here. I have to give credit to Dalglish for these moves though – he’s recognised that Liverpool aren’t a side who have the capacity to play flair football anymore so they’re getting back to basics with a rugged 4-4-2 before presumably attempting to push on to becoming a big club in England again. There’s still work to do at Liverpool, especially in the full-back areas and on the flanks, but they’ve made a step in the right direction.

However, I cannot fathom the odds on a Chelsea win here today because they look too generous! Liverpool have made some good moves with the future in mind but the reality of it at the present is that they’ve brought in Suarez for Torres, who not only isn’t as good as Torres but has played one competitive game in the past couple of months and that was a brief appearance against Stoke City for Liverpool. Therefore, Liverpool are still in the same position as they were a few weeks ago – lighweight in most areas of the field and looking to Gerrard for guidance so I can’t rate their chances too highly here.

As a Manchester United fan, I’m not going to be upset if I’m wrong and Liverpool win this game 0-5 but I’d be very surprised to see it. I think Dalglish has brought a more spirited Liverpool to their games but they’re still a little short in the talent area, especially after the departure of Torres, and especially in comparison to an experienced side like Chelsea. For me, Chelsea will continue their good run of form today and win this game quite comfortably at decent odds of 8/13, which I’d have personally shortened to 1/2 here.

Team news – Chelsea miss Alex, Zhirkov, and Benayoun whereas Liverpool miss Carroll and Spearing whilst having doubts over Poulsen and Cole.

Verdict: Chelsea to win at 8/13.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Argentina U20 vs Brazil U20 – Brazil U20 to win at 4/5.

For me, this is a bargain price. Brazil have a much better U20 side this year than Argentina, which isn’t entirely Argentina’s fault as River Plate spat their dummies out and withdrew some integral members of their team ahead of this tournament and it’s impacted Argentina’s displays. However, Brazil still possess a better team this year than Argentina and the inclusion of the likes of Neymar is proof of that as he’s frankly too good to be playing at this level. Barring a miracle, Brazil will win the tournament if they win this game as there isn’t anybody else remotely close to stopping them from doing so from a quality perspective so they will be motivated against their rivals tonight. Similarly, if Argentina fail to beat Brazil then they can wave their hopes goodbye too so we should see a good open game here. However, for my money, Brazil will outscore Argentina here so the odds of a Brazil win appeal to me at 45/.

Verdict: Brazil U20 to win at 4/5.

Newcastle Jets vs Sydney FC – away win at 7/5.

Approach this game with caution as it’s virtually a redundant game!

However, I’m siding with Sydney FC for this one. Sydney have given their fans little to cheer about this season with impotent displays ultimately leading to a very disappointing campaign. Nonetheless, momentum is massively on their side at the moment and I don’t know if it’s the fact that there’s no pressure on Sydney currently or whether the signing of Makela has inspired them but Sydney are playing really good football and are scoring goals for fun so they must be taken seriously here. We all know that they’re a lot better than their league placing suggests – maybe the signing of Makela was the missing piece of the jigsaw. Sydney FC have sold striker Brosque to Shimizu S-Pulse, which I suppose was to be expected, ultimately. However, Sydney have a new hero now and are now unbeaten in five games, winning three times along the way so I think they’ll maintain their run today. Newcastle Jets are all but out of the final stages of the A-League unless they win all their remaining games and require Wellington Phoeni to fuck up consistently for the remainder of the eason, neither of which is likely at al to happen. The Jets continue to have injury problems, problems which have contributed heavily to their run of four consecutive defeats. They’ve scored just once during that run but have conceded ten times so things aren’t great for the Jets currently. They’ve lost defender Milicevic and miss holding midfielder Wehrman, not to mention fellow midfielders Kantarovski, Fiorentina, and Zadkovich, all of which are regulars. The Jets effectively have no midfielders available for this game and that’s quite obviously a gigantic blow and should make them vulnerable here. Sydney FC do miss number one goalkeeper Reddy and long-term absentee Foxe in defence but their absences aren’t irreplaceable so I’m not too concerned here, especially with the talented Brazilian striker Bruno Cazarine ready to step in to cover for the absent Bridge and departed Brosque in attack.

For me, the odds are good enough to take a chance on the away win so that’s my call here.

Team news – Newcastle Jets miss Fiorentina, Bridges, Rooney, Kantarovski, Mooy, Wehrman, Zandkovich, and Griffiths whereas Sydney FC miss Brosque, Reddy, Foxe, Bridge, and Antonis.

Verdict: Sydney FC to win at 7/5.

Germinal Beerschot vs Lokeren – away win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Germinal Beerschot’s home record in the Eerste Klasse is quite good but solely because they’ve defended competently. Only Anderlecht have conceded less home goals than Germinal Beerschot have this season so my hat goes off to today’s hosts. However, in terms of goalscoring, they’re one of the weakest sides in the top flight of Belgian football with just seven goals scored in eleven home games. To be fair to Germinal, they have recognised the problem and signed former Anderlecht striker Kabananga to help them out in attack as only Junior Negrao has been scoring for Germinal. Whether it works or not remains to be seen but I simply don’t rate them as an attacking force currently, something which is backed up by three consecutive defeats without scoring a goal lately. To make matters worse for the well-organised hosts, they miss promising midfield engine Wanyama and regular De Decker, also from midfield, so they’re not at full-strength today.

Visitors Lokeren have disappointed since returning from the winter break, playing a lacklustre goalless draw at Kortrijk, being rather easily outplayed in the derby with AA Gent, and bizarrely losing at home to Eupen, who are easily one of the worst clubs in the Eerste Klasse. However, that run cannot detract from the fact that Lokeren are a good side and they finally showed it again by overcoming Cercle Brugge 2-1 at home last match so they bring some momentum into this game as a result. Lokeren’s missings are minimal with only Tshimanga being of significant importance in terms of the current campaign but Iceland U21 star Finnbogason is on hand to try and forge a lethal partnership with De Ceulaer and when they do, I think we’ll see an even better Lokeren. Lokeren haven’t won many at all away from home this season but they’ve lost a minimal number on the road too, due to them being a very well-organised team with some very good individuals and I expect Lokeren to at least draw this game as a result.

In my view, Lokeren are a much better side than Germinal Beerschot and I can’t see them losing this game as a result. As long as Lokeren turn up as they’re capable of doing then they stand a very good chance of winnng this game, just as they have various times here in Antwerp over the years so it’s not out of the question at all, as this Lokeren side is the best they’ve had for some time. For me, backing Lokeren to win this game with draw no bet cover at 5/6 is a good value be today.

Team news – Germinal Beerschot miss Wanyama, Pacovski, De Decker, and Dudu whereas Lokeren miss De Roover, Fevang, Yagan, and Tshimanga.

Verdict: Lokeren to win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Palestino vs Union Espanola – home win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Palestino lost a few attackers during the break but have still kept hold of star striker Canales so I’m not too concerned here. Not much else has changed at Palestino over the break so I expect quite a lot from them this season in the Primera Division. However, Union Espanola’s star striker Canales (no relation!) left in December and important defenders Cordova and Najera also departed during December too so they’re not in the best position at the moment. They’ve tried to sign replacements in Olarra and Perez but it’s going to take time and I don’t personally think that they’re good enough to do it. They’ve also brought in goalkeeper Lobos from Krylya Sovetov Samara in Russia and striker Jaime from La Serena but again, I have my doubts over the quality of the substitutions. Union Espanola lost their first Primera Division game because they rested players for their Copa Libertadores game, turning out to be very vulnerable at home to Cobreloa, losing without even scoring a goal. Union Espanola playing Bolivar La Paz again last match just three days ago and drew a feisty game 0-0 so they may rest players for this game or risk fielding a tired team for the difficult trip to Palestino. Either way, I don’t envision a full-strength Union Espanola side here but given that Union Espanola have failed to win for two consecutive visits to Palestino, I think there’s value on the home win with draw no bet cover at 5/6 as Palestino is a tough away game at the best of time but even moreso with important players having departed.

Verdict: Palestino to win with draw no bet at 5/6.

Itagui Ditaires vs Independiente Medellin – over 2.5 goals at 21/20.

Itagui Ditaires have been forced to make some swift signings to prepare themselves for a season in one of the hardest leagues in the world – the Colombian Primera A – especially as they lost star striker Luis Paez to Atletico Junior Barranquilla in December. Itagui have drafted in experienced Nestor Salazar and Lionard Pajoy to fill the void and the two combined should be able to give Itagui some threat in front of goal. They’ve also signed midfielders Cordoba and Arango from Atletico Nacional de Medellin, defender Serrano from La Equidad Bogota, and veteran midfielder Patino from Cucuta Deportivo as the bid to dramatically boost their number of experienced players in a desperate bid to try and get something out of their maiden voyage in the Primera A.

Visitors Independiente Medellin are without a doubt the bigger and the better of these two sides. However, they suffered last season due to a lack of threat in front of goal and if they hadn’t had their infamous defence available to them then they’d have finished a lot lower in the table. The news that they’ve now sold vital defenders Ochoa, Almeida, and Valencia to Millonarios Bogota and Atletico Junior Barranquilla respectively will have caused them great concern, despite the signing of replacement Vanegas from Atletico Paranaense. Indeed, Independiente also waved farewell to star striker Arias, who left for Toluca in Mexico, so they could be in for a tough game tonight. They’ve signed striker Trellez from Velez Sarsfield in an attempt to replace Arias but their predominant focus has been on midfield, as they’ve now signed Arboleda from Real Cartagena, Baena and Castrillon from Once Caldas Manizales, as well as Jaramillo from Atletico Junior Barranquilla. Castrillon in particular was a great signing, in my view – one of the best holding midfielder in Colombia – but it’s not really what they need so I’m a bit puzzled by the signature.

As much as I rate Independiente Medellin, I can’t take their chances here seriously at all. The Primera A is notorious for being one of the hardest leagues in the world to win an away game in and they’re going to have a lot of work ahead of them to overcome minnows Itagui tonight with three out of their excellent back four having moved on. Defence was always the strongest area for Independiente Medellin but without it, I don’t know what they’ll do here. Itagui will work their socks off as they’re hosting as massive club in their first game so I expect a rather frantic game here but with Independiente Medellin being the better side and neither side defending with any great ability, I think over 2.5 goals at 21/20 is the way forward here.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 21/20.

Deportivo Cali vs Cucuta Deportivo – home win at 10/11.

Deportivo Cali lost Elkin Calle, Juan Castillo, Juan Dominguez, Edgar Zapata, and Martin Morel during the transfer window. However, they signed Breiner Belalcazaar, Victor Centurion, Gabriel Fernandez, and Gonzalo Martinez, all of which I personally consider to be good signings for tonight’s hosts. I don’t know how quickly Deportivo Cali’s new signings will adapt so be careful here. Indeed, the signing of Gabriel Fernandez was somewhat contraversial given he was recently contracted to Deportivo Cali’s bitter rivals America de Cali so it remains to be seen how he’ll do here. However, one of the fundamental parts of their opponents tonight is experienced striker Carpintero as he scored the vast majority of their goals and they’re generally rather useless without him. Well, the good news is that he’s moved on to Millonarios Bogota and with Cucuta Deportivo already rather woeful away from home in the Primera A, I think it may be time for Deportivo Cali to break the curse and beat Cucuta Deportivo at home, especially as Cucuta’s attempts to replace Carpintero have been rather minimal.

Verdict: Deportivo Cali to win at 10/11.

Millonarios Bogota vs Atletico Huila – home win at 5/4.

This game was very nearly game of the day so cue the inevitable rare away win here!

Either way, I still really fancy this one. Millonarios have really flexed their muscles in the transfer market in the break with new signings Nelson Ramos, Juan Dominguez, Juan Ortiz, Lewis Ochoa, Mayer Candelo, Carlos Preciado, Edison Toloza, Jose Tancredi, and Wilson Carpintero. However, Millonarios Bogota have also parted with a large number of players, namely Jose Amaya, Yovanny Arrechea, Jonathan Estrada, Yoiber Gonzalez, John Jairo Montano, Jose Moya, Juan Obelar, Lionard Pajoy, Elvis Perlaza, Edier Tello, Juan Guttierez, and John Ulloque. The most notable departures from the afore-mentioned are those of holding midfielder Amaya, star striker Arrechea, midfielder Estrada, midfielder Perez, and goalkeeper Guttierez. Nonetheless, Millonarios have lived up to their name by spending big and the capturing of Carpintero and Ortiz have impressed me a lot with Millonarios determined to be a big name in Colombian football again rather than just a big memory.

Visitors Atletico Huila lost a lot of players during the transfer window with all of their midfield moving on (Araujo to La Equidad Bogota, Belalcazar to Deportivo Cali, Carbonero to Once Caldas Manizales, and Castillo to Deportes Tolima) and important defender Martinez leaving for Deportivo Cali whilst experienced striker Velasquez moving to Venezuela to play for Mineros de Guayana. Huila have of course tried to bring in replacements but they’re not a big club so they’ve really struggled and the only signing they’ve brought in that has impressed me is the signature of ex-Steaua Bucharest striker Moreno – the rest don’t do much for me.

Huila have a decent record at Millonarios but I think we may finally see Millonarios start to compete with the big boys of Colombian football again this season and if they intend on doing so then it has to start tonight. It’s asking a lot for the new signings to all gel quickly but I still think the odds of 5/4 on a Millonarios win here are generous, especially given the high number of important players that Huila have lost over the break.

Verdict: Millonarios Bogota to win at 5/4.

SC Freiburg vs Eintracht Frankfurt – home win at 11/10.

Six wins from ten home games in the Bundesliga this season says that Freiburg are better than ever and I can only agree with that sentiment. They average scoring 1.6 goals per home game and enter this game on the back of an impressive 0-1 victory at sleeping giants VfB Stuttgart. They’re unbeaten since November in the Bundesliga and have generally looked very resilient and able. They owe an awful lot of their form to star striker Cisse but he’s fit and likely to start so they should continue their form today. Dinamo Minsk academy product Putsila has settled in well to the Freiburg midfield and new signing Jendrisek provides additional support for the Freiburg attack so I have a lot of faith in the the hosts today – they’ve been immense this season.

Frankfurt have been their typical selves this season – hard to beat but not much going forwards. However, their counter-attacks do remain rather feared, unlike their atypical attacks, which are rather ineffectual. However, morale is dropping like a stone following three consecutive defeats without even registering a single goal and although their injury list is lessening, they’re simply not in a good place right now and nobody envies them for it! Frankfurt will make Freiburg work hard today but Freiburg have beaten better sides than Frankfurt at home already this season so the visitors have every reason to be concerned today.

In my view, Freiburg are a better side than Frankfurt this season. Frankfurt aren’t in the best of form and are really struggling to score goals as the dependancy upon Greek powerhouse Gekkas is made blindingly obvious so I don’t rate Frankfurt’s chances here. For me, the value is on a Freiburg win, which is generously priced at 11/10.

Team news – SC Freiburg miss Pouplin, Krmas, Hofler, Jager, Olle Olle, Schuster, Williams, and Bechmann whereas Eintracht Frankfurt miss Rossi, Chris, Petkovic, Vasoski, Bajramovic, and Clark.

Verdict: SC Freiburg to win at 11/10.

Vitesse Arnhem vs Feyenoord Rotterdam – home win at 13/10.

I’ve mentioned before that Vitesse are well on their way to becoming a power in Netherlands following heavy financial investment and an astute managerial appointment with former Barcelona full-back Albert Ferrer at the helm and today is the opportune moment for the hosts to demonstrate their capabilities. They drubbed Roda JC Kerkrade 5-2 in their last home game and have since signed talented Ivorian striker Wilfried from Sparta Prague, although he’s actually unavailable to play for the hosts today. Vitesse have a largely full squad to choose from, which means that Slovenian playmaker Stevanovic should have a whole host of options when Vitesse attack and play their mock Barcelona styled football. Vitesse are lacking a finisher, in my view, but Pedersen and Wilfried are both well placed to become that missing link and when that inevitably happens for the hosts, I think we’ll see a lot more from them. Either way, I really rate the way that Vitesse play so I have to give them a chance here, especially after such a convincing display last match.

Visitors Feyenoord – well, what can I say that I’ve not already said before? They’re full of kids, bereft of important players, and generally terrible away from home. They’ve made some movements during the transfer window to secured experienced Danish target man Soren Larsen and loan Hungarian winger Simon, to name a couple, but there’s still a lot of work to do here, especially with star striker Castaignos rumoured to be joining Internazionale. Feyenoord do have some talented youngsters but away from home they tend to look very inexperienced, hence Feyenoord having lost so many away games and conceded so many goals.

Although I think Feyenoord wil gradually get better with the signature of Larsen, I still think that there’s value on a Vitesse win today – they simply play better football and create more chances.

Team news – Vitesse Arnhem miss Wilfried and have doubts over Matic whereas Feyenoord Rotterdam miss Tomasson, Darley, Cisse, Schenkeveld, Fernandez, Schaken, Auassar, and have doubts over De Cler and Bruins.

Verdict: Vitesse Arnhem to win at 13/10.

FC Utrecht vs Twente Enschede – away win at 5/4.

I’m a little nervous with this one having seen Utrecht destroy Ajax here, albeit a very young Ajax team. However, Twente have demonstrated incredible maturity this season and I was very impressed with what I saw of them during their win at Groningen in their last away game, inflicting Groningen’s first home defeat of the season despite Tim Matavz’s outstanding opener. Twente have won seven out of eleven on the road in the Eredivisie thanks to astute tactical displays, the aerial prowess of Marc Janko, and a solid backline so I have to favour Twente here. I’d probably avoid this game if Utrecht were at full-strength but star striker Van Wolfswinkel is still absent due to injury and I think Utrecht finally have a game where his absence will really show. Twente took an age to overcome Feyenoord last match but the fact alone that they did indicates the strong sense of belief that they currently possess.

Although I’d leave it if the odds drop, I think there’s value in a Twente win today.

Team news – FC Utrecht miss Mulenga, Van Wolfswinkel, Oar, Silberbauer, and have doubts over Demouge whereas Twente Enschede miss Kuiper and Bannink.

Verdict: Twente Enschede to win at 5/4.

Valencia CF vs Hercules Alicante – home win with -1.5 handicap at 7/5.

I don’t like backing Valencia CF at the best of times but I have to here because Hecules don’t score goals away from home. I’d utilise some caution here as this is a Valenciana derby but Valencia themselves really should be too good for Hercules today. I don’t rate Valencia anywhere near as much as most people but they’ve got some good players i.e. Mata, Banega, and Pablo Hernandez, players who can make things happen for their semi-decent strikers Aduriz and Soldado. Valencia win games if they dominate midfield and I’m not seeing who will stop them for Hercules today. Hercules have brought outcast Drenthe back into the team – I wonder if that will cause tension given the rumoured bust-ups between him and his boss? Either way, Hercules miss two important defenders today – Pamarot and Paz – and given that they don’t score goals away from home, I have to take a convincing Valencia win on board here.

Hercules were destroyed 0-3 at home by Barcelona last match whereas Valencia were held to a 1-1 draw at bogey team Racing Santander. Valencia are very strong at the Mestalla, however, so if they take their chances against a defensively inept and under-strength Hercules side, we really should see Valencia beat the -1.5 goal handicap at generous odds.

Team news – Valencia CF miss Costa whereas Hercules Alicante miss Pamarot, Paz, and Sarr.

Verdict: Valencia CF to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 7/5.
