Today’s secondary featured game is the Brazilian Serie A game between Corinthians and Fluminense.
Despite possessing a large amount of quality players and a lot of financial support, Corinthians are still missing something and I’m not 100% sure what it is. Team spirit, perhaps? Their organisation isn’t lacking; they can beat anyone in South America by a 1-0 scoreline if they feel like it. Maybe that’s the other problem – this side doesn’t score enough goals. Playing in Brazil without scoring many goals can often cause issues as there really aren’t many sides in Serie A that don’t score goals. There’s a lot of experienced players in this side so composure is rarely an issue. Not having a definite starting two up front is proving to be an issue, though. One thing is for sure, though – Corinthians must be motivated to win games and I don’t see them being 100% motivated today due to their Copa Libertadores commitments. They’ve drawn 0-0 at Vasco da Gama a few days ago and the return leg is approaching rapidly so I’ll be surprised if Corinthians field a full-strength side today. However, unlike a lot of Brazilian sides, they do have depth on their side, which is most probably why the odds are shortening on the Corinthians win here despite the Copa Libertadores always taking the priority for every club in South America.
Atypically, you could be forgiven for giving Fluminense a shout to win here with Corinthians’ attention elsehwere but Fluminense themselves have Copa Libertadores commitments as they trail Boca Juniors 1-0 from the first leg a few days ago with the return leg coming up in the next few days. Under Abel Braga, Fluminense have looked almost as good as they did under Muricy, in my view. Braga has sorted out their defence and made them almost as good as their hosts when it comes to frustrating sides. As far as goalscoring goes, Fluminense are starting to improve now that they have more than just Fred scoring the goals. Deco and Thiago Neves are still dominating their midfield and that allows Rafael Moura, Fred, and Rafael Sobis the freedom to wreak havoc. I’m actually pretty impressed with what I’ve seen of Fluminense so far this year so perhaps another Serie A title push is on the horizon for the Tricolor; who knows? However, they’re almost certain to rest players here too so I’m not sure they’ll do anything against Corinthians.
Considering that both sides are built on a strong defence and will attack with caution unless trailing, I think we’re in for a low-scoring encounter here. We might see a few first-team players either start or enter the field at some point in the game but I don’t see it being enough to send this game over 2.5 goals. For me, under 2.5 goals is worth taking at 4/5.
