Today’s free tip is in the Spanish Primera Liga encounter between Deportivo La Coruna and newly-promoted Getafe.

It’s important that Deportivo La Coruna are only backed on certain occasions this season because for now, they look pretty bad in defence. Their overall displays aren’t bad but good attacks are punishing them on every occasion. Real Sociedad did it, RCD Espanyol did it, and even Real Betis Balompie did it. However, there are certain teams that Deportivo La Coruna will get away with it against and I am optimistic that Madrid-based Getafe are one of them.

What I like about Deportivo La Coruna this season is that Pepe Mel has assembled a team with a very strong attack. Instead of it just being Celso Borges trying to feed workhorse Andone, the experienced boss has added rapid Belgian attacker Bakkali and Uruguay’s latest prodigy Valverde to the Deportivo La Coruan midfield. Furthermore, they’ve managed to bring Lucas Perez back to the club where he was a legend and have also loaned Adrian from FC Porto, which gives them better finishers than Andone, although it must be noted that Adrian is absent today. In due course, I expect Deportivo La Coruna to score even more goals because that’s what they’re good at.

Again, I don’t think Deportivo La Coruna have played particularly badly this season – they’ve just defended stupidly sometimes and have lost games because of it. Against RCD Espanyol, there were plenty of signs that their players are getting accustomed with one another and an experienced boss like Pepe Mel will only increase the speed at which that occurs. This is probably the best Deportivo La Coruna side that I’ve seen for some years now, as it goes. They won’t achieve anything, per se, but I at least expect them to stay away from the relegation battle this season when they settle down, especially when Schar and Sidnei become familiar with one another in defence.

Although I have been impressed with Getafe’s performances on their return to the Primera Liga, a trip to Riazor is never one that is relished. Having said that, Getafe had a surprisingly good record in Galicia before they were relegated so they may enter this game with a bit of confidence. Still, they’re going to have to produce a strong display to handle this Deportivo La Coruna side and even a 4-0 win over Villarreal CF does not convince me that they’re capable of producing such. Indeed, Villarreal CF sacked Fran Escriba after that defeat, which should tell you how illogical it was.

Credit must be given where it’s due, though – Getafe are playing well, although ironically they seem to be doing better on the road than at home which is a polar opposite to the way they were for many years before being relegated. Still, they”ve had some rather favourable away games this season, which would explain it. No, I don’t think Celta de Vigo are an easy side to face, and nor are Athletic Club de Bilbao. What I mean is that both teams had new managers that hadn’t settled in and the effects of such are still visible now from both teams, never mind several weeks ago! Furthermore, a trip to Leganes is not so tricky to navigate as long as the side in question won’t get riled by hard challenges and will take the chances that come their way, which Getafe did. Today’s trip to Deportivo La Coruna should be their hardest away trip to date in the current campaign, though, and I haven’t seen enough quality from them this season to suggest that they can handle it.

I do think that Getafe have been shrewd pre-season, signing players that are likely to help them stay up. For example, they signed Moroccan playmaker Fajr from today’s hosts and he’s proven he knows how to make things happen at this level before. Indeed, if Getafe are to score today, it’ll probably be him that bags it! They also signed rapid Ecuadorian winger Montero from Swansea City, which was a very clever move because he’s a fantastic winger when fit. They enter the Primera Liga with experienced players a-plenty too, not least towering Spanish striker Jorge Molina, who is probably best known for his work up front alongside Ruben Castro at Real Betis Balompie some years ago. They’re not novices, Getafe – they might just stay up this season.

Do they have what it takes to get a favourable result at Riazor, though? Not in my opinion. They’ve still got a lot of players absent at the moment including Japanese midfielder Shibasaki, forwards Chuli and Pacheco, not to mention defender Gorosito. Getafe do not have the depth to keep playing with so many absentees. For now they’re ok but they need to get some of the back ASAP – they’ve got some grim games coming up including a period in October where they’ve got three games in seven days. I like some of the players that are available to them today but is there a strong enough to repel Deportivo La Coruna? I don’t see one. I think they lack leadership at the back (they’ve conceded some very sloppy goals this season) and they lack natural creators (other than Fajr) in midfield. I admire their team spirit and cohesion but it’s going to take a display that I don’t believe they’re capable of right now in order to avoid defeat in Galicia today.

My call is for the underrated home side to triumph at 6/5.

Verdict: Deportivo La Coruna to win at 6/5.
