Dinamo Zagreb vs Hajduk Split

Today’s secondary featured game is the clash of the titans in the Croatian Prva Liga between Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split. Dinamo are five points clear at the top of the table and look strong whereas Hajduk look susceptible at the best of times so I don’t rate their chances too highly here.

Twenty-one games played; sixteen wins. That’s Dinamo Zagreb in a nutshell. They’re by far the best side in Croatia at the moment and their efficiency levels are just amazing. Coach Valilhodzic may be a defensive manager but his side sure knows how to win games. They’ve won seven out of their ten home games in the Prva Liga whilst averaging scoring over two goals per home game and conceding less than a goal per home game so you can see why they do well. Creative players such as Sammir and Morales may not be Halilhodzic’s first choice in general as they’re not defensive players but they make things happen and as a result, Dinamo tend to capitalise, especially with Rukavina in attack. The only problem I ever have with Dinamo is that their side is very inexperienced outside of their defence and that can cost them in big games sometimes. However, they’ve got the necessary firepower to overcome Hajduk here, just as they did last season, so I fancy them to win this game given their strong and assured displays thus far this season.

In addition to the above, the January departures of Hajduk Split’s playmaker Ibricic and defender Strinic have lessened the quality, creativity, and reliability of Hajduk massively as you can see from their results since their return from the winter break. They’ve won some games, admittedly, just like their 3-1 win against local rivals Split lately. However, one thing that the statistics don’t show you is that Split matched Hajduk for large portions of the game and it needed some magic from captain Andric to win the game for Hajduk. In short, it’s fair to observe that Hajduk are not the side that they were. Only emerging talent Vukusic in attack and playmaker Sharbini remain leading lights for the Croatian giants but I fear that it won’t be enough for them today, not in an “eternal derby” anyway.

I expect a close game as a win isn’t mandatory for Dinamo and as a draw for Hajduk is a good result. However, Dinamo have the extra edge in ability, especially when it comes to creating and scoring chances, so I fancy their chances here, especially with Strinic having moved on. For me, odds of 4/5 on a superior Dinamo side are too generous here so my call is the home win at 4/5.

Verdict: Dinamo Zagreb to win at 4/5.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Quilmes vs Independiente – away win with draw no bet at 4/5.

Quality-wise, there’s a pretty large gap between these two old Argentinian sides. Newly-promoted Quilmes are beginning to feel it too, especially on the back of five defeats in five Clausura games. Independiente have hardly fared better but the difference between the two sides is that you know Independiente are capable of better whereas Quilmes aren’t really capable of much improving on their current displays. I’d normally avoid this game given the importance of the clash in the relegation battle but Independiente finally got the break that they needed with a 4-0 win at home to Newells Old Boys and the momentum that they bring into this game as a result should be instrumental here. Quilmes are at rock bottom because they don’t score goals but Independiente are very much capable of doing that with Silvera and Defederico in their line-up. In my opinion, I just don’t see Independiente losing this game – they’ve too much quality in each department in comparison to Quilmes. Quilmes are a poor side at the moment and a driven Independiente should be able to at the very least match them here. Thererfore, backing the visitors with draw no bet cover at 4/5 appeals to me tonight.

Verdict: Independiente to win with draw no bet at 4/5.

Godoy Cruz de Mendoza vs Atletico Lanus – over 2.5 goals at 5/4.

Godoy Cruz de Mendoza have made no secret whatsoever of their prioritising of the Copa Libertadores this season and as it’s their first season in the competition, it’s no surprise whatsoever that that is their attitude. However, they lack a lot of depth in their squad so it’s no surprise whatsoever that they tend to struggle before Copa Libertadoes games. To be fair, Godoy are generally an attacking side so over 2.5 goals games are rarely far away but it’s no coincidence that all three of their pre-Copa Libertadores games thus far have easily cleared 2.5 goals due to resting players and their opponents recognising it. With a tie against Independiente looming large next week, I don’t imagine for one second that Godoy will field a full-strength team here. Atletico Lanus are a side that are very much capable of taking adavantage of their hosts here too, with a good attacking side boasting the likes of Camoranesi in their ranks so don’t understimate them here. Four out of Lanus’ last five games have gone over 2.5 goals in their reckless attacking style and although I respect them for their tactical ways, it does hinder their progress from time to time. Nonetheless, they do score goals as well as concede goals so they’re usually good fodder for over 2.5 goals selections and tonight is no exception. With Godoy resting players and Lanus playing for points, I think we’ll probably see an away win here. However, Godoy do attack well, irrespective of who they field, so I won’t enter the 1×2 market here. Either way, over 2.5 goals looks favourable with the above in mind and the odds are generous enough to take so over 2.5 goals is my call here.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 5/4.

Arsenal de Sarandi vs River Plate – home win at 6/4.

Arsenal de Sarandi have been one of the trickier sides to face away from home in Argentina for a couple of years now and this season is no exception either with Tigre and Independiente both having lost here comfortably this season whilst Arsenal have kept two clean sheets along the way. The Obolo-Leguizamon partnership is finally beginning to flourish for Arsenal and Leguizamon will be very keen to score against the club that raised him as a player tonight so Arsenal do have some additional motivation to win this game. Argentinian sides are always motivated against the likes of River Plate and Boca Juniors as it is and with the knowledge that River haven’t won here for four consecutive visits, including a defeat here last season, Arsenal should be quite confident tonight.

River Plate’s biggest problem ahead of this game is not scoring goals. I’ve mentioned it before and I’ll mention it again; they lack a target man and it really hinders them. Pavone has not turned into the signing that many expected him to be and it’s hurting their battle against relegation. As is always the case with River Plate, they’ve got a lot of talented academy players but you know as soon as they’re ready to become a regular in the side, they’ll have been signed by leading Spanish or Portuguese clubs. Their current star in attack is Mori and Lamela isn’t far behind him (he should feature tonight too after shaking off an injury) but what are the chances that they’ll both be there for the Apertura next season? Not likely, in my view. Buonanotte was carrying the team and although he’s still on loan here, he was snapped up by Spanish moneybags Malaga and will join them at the end of the Clausura. That’s the way it goes for River nowadays and with a lack of creavity, experience, and finesse in their team, I find it hard to take River seriously here.

For me, the home win for Arsenal at 6/4 has value here. Arsenal always score goals at home and with River failing to score more often than not, I think it’s worth a flutter here.

Verdict: Arsenal de Sarandi to win at 6/4.

Millonarios Bogota vs Itagui Ditaires – home win at evens.

I’d love to substantiate it more but I simply cannot find the words to express that Millonarios are better than Itagui in anything but a direct way! Itagui have started well but Millonarios have the home advantage, more experience, and frankly have better players than their opponents. It isn’t always the case that things go as planned in Colombia but Millonarios should not be so generously priced here, in my view, so my call is the home win.

Verdict: Millonarios Bogota to win at evens.

Blackburn Rovers vs Blackpool – home win at 5/6.

Blackburn welcome back New Zealand centre-back Nelsen for this game, importantly – he’ll add stability to their defence, a defence that is very hard indeed to break. Only Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur have conceded less goals at home than Blackburn have this season and the only thing that separates Blackburn from the afore-mentioned is their ability to convert chances. Indeed, that’s been their problem that has led them to five consecutive games without a win, losing four times along the way. However, I would point out that Blackburn have played three away games during that time – which is where they always struggle – and their two home games have been against Spurs (tough game) and Newcastle (one-off). Blackburn do need to convert their chances more often but the return of legend Santa Cruz should aid them there. Blackburn have the creativity in midfield to help out on that front and with their opponents being so woeful defensively, I think Blackburn can find a seventh home win of the season today.

Blackpool welcome back playmaker Charlie Adam from suspension for this game but important DJ Campbell is still suspended for his antics against Wolverhampton Wanderers and that should prove to be a costly blow to Holloway’s side. Considering that only Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur have scored more goals away from home than they have, the statistic that Blackpool have lost eight out of fifteen on the road in the Premeir League just isn’t good enough. I like Blackpool a lot and I admire their determination to play good football but their defensive ineptitude costs them regularly, especially of late, so it’s hard to give them a break in what is a very difficult away game here. They’ve conceded twelve goals in their last three Premier League away games and if they give a Blackburn side with a strong defence that kind of lead then Blackpool are going to lose here, which is what I expect to happen.

Blackpool work hard and will almost certainly do so here, possibly even scoring too. However, Blackburn are a better unit and if they have the ability to score against Blackpool then their defence should aid them in seeing out the victory. For me, the home win is too generously priced at 5/6 so my call is a Blackburn win here.

Team news – Blackburn Rovers miss Givet whilst having doubts over Andrews, Dunn, Grella, and Jones whereas Blackpool miss Campbell, Basham, Sbai, Clarke, Gilks, and Rachubka.

Verdict: Blackburn Rovers to win at 5/6.

Lorient vs Saint-Etienne – home win at evens.

Lorient have already won eight out of fifteen Ligue 1 home games this season whilst averaging scoring nearly two goals per home game and conceding just over a goal per home game so it’s easy to see why they’re a force in Ligue 1. In addition to that, their artificial turf makes this one of the hardest away games in Ligue 1 and although Lorient haven’t been firing on all cylinders lately, they should be today, especially with the news that Gameiro has been called into the France national team for their upcoming game. If he’s in-form then Lorient tend to win and with that morale-boosting news, I fancy Lorient to edge this game.

Saint-Etienne haven’t lost that many away from home in the current campaign but the absence of ex-Lorient defence Marchal is a costly blow for them as it weakens their defence so they may suffer here. Saint-Etienne have lost four out of their last five games whilst scoring just four times and conceding nine times along the way so their problems are more than evident here. Saint-Etienne are a resilient side and I don’t like betting against them but with no Marchal and on a tough pitch, I don’t rate their chances here, irrespective of their last game resulting in a much-needed win or not.

I’d leave it if the odds drop but Lorient should have too much for Saint-Etienne here so my call is the home win, especially with Perrin a doubt for this game!

Team news – Saint-Etienne miss Marchal whilst having doubts over Andreu and Perrin.

Verdict: Lorient to win at evens.

BV09 Borussia Dortmund vs Mainz 05 – under 2.5 goals at 43/40.

Maybe it’s just me but Dortmund have looked quite jaded and uninterested lately and have grown complacent as a result. They’ve struggled to score goals in their last two home games despite facing inferior opponents and I expect more of the same today, especially as they know that the Bundesliga title is virtually theirs already. Dortmund’s defence has proven to be strong lately, however, so I think they’ll contain a fairly impotent Mainz 05 side here rather well. Given that both sides would take a low-scoring game here though, I have to favour under 2.5 goals for this game. Mainz 05 would take a draw from Dortmund and Dortmund would take a 1-0 win and given that neither side concedes many when they play their respective games, I think that going under 2.5 goals at 43/40 is appealing here.

Team news – BV09 Borussia Dortmund miss Focher, Hornschuh, Owomoyela, Sobiech, Kagawa, Kringe, Ginczek, Le Tallec, Stiepermann, and Zidan whereas Koln miss Gopko, Low, Caligiuri, Grimm, Jeffrey, Karhan, Simak, and Szalai.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 43/40.

Nurnberg vs Werder Bremen – home win at 6/5.

I always have a morbid fear when betting against Werder Bremen because I simply cannot name a side more likely to score against the odds than them. They turn up at the most inconvenient of times (from a betting perspective) and I’m just hoping that it’s not today!

Nurnberg have already won an impressive nine out of thirteen Bundesliga home games this season whilst averaging scoring nearly two goals per home game so they need to be taken seriously here. Bremen, on the other hand, have lost seven out of thirteen on the road due to importent displays and inept defending. Nurnberg have won six out of their last seven games so they’re on a massive run of momentum, especially with four consecutive wins accompanying four consecutive clean sheets despite hosting Leverkusen and Hamburg along the way so this side is very much a force at the moment. Visitors Bremen have some fantastic players but as usual this season, most of them are injured so I have my doubts over them today. They’ve played rather well lately, worryingly enough, even winning at in-form SC Freiburg! However, one thing that you can always associate with Bremen is their ability to concede goals and they’ve not lost that ability so I have to go against them here, especially with so many players still absent, their defence vulnerable, and only Pizarro having the ability to put the ball in the net.

Team news – Nurnberg miss Batz, T.Ochs, Bieler, Judt, Frantz, Sauter, Bunjaku, and Schieber whereas Werder Bremen miss Vander, Wiedwald, Andersen, Boenisch, Naldo, Prodl, Samuel, Bargfrede, Husejinovic, Ikeng, Jensen, Kroos, Vranjes, Ayik, Schindler, Testroet, and Thy.

Verdict: Nurnberg to win at 6/5.

Hamburger SV vs Koln – both sides to score at 4/6.

If Hamburg hadn’t sacked Veh after their 6-0 annihlation at Bayern Munich last match then I’d have been all over the laying of the hosts here. However, they’ve brought in Oenning as boss and you don’t need me to tell you all what affect a new manager can have on a team so I’d rather not risk it here. Instead, I’d rather go for the more likely option of both sides scoring here as Hamburg will be out to impress their new manager whereas Koln are in great form with Podolski scoring goals for fun so I think both sides should at least score here. I’m not entering the 1×2 market for reasons I’ve already mentioned but with Hamburg’s defence still likely to be shaky and Koln’s attack being surprisingly incisive for a change, my call is for both sides to score at decent odds.

Team news – Hamburger SV miss Drobny, Besic, Sowah, Stepanek, H.Behrens, Castelen, Gross, and Choupo-Moting whereas Koln miss Horn, Schwabke, Basala-Mazana, Cullmann, Geromel, Giannoulis, McKenna, Schorch, Vaassen, Buchtmann, Niedrig, Yalcin, and Uth.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 4/6.

Palermo vs AC Milan – away win at 11/10.

I can’t phrase it any more simply than to say that Palermo have looked dodgy at the back lately without Romanian defensive rock Goian there and that they’ve looked poor in front of goal. AC Milan aren’t the force that they once were and they do miss Ibrahimovic here through suspension but in terms of scoring goals, AC Milan should be able to score enough here against a demoralised Palermo side to make this tricky trip to Sicily a happy one and the odds are decent enough to take a chance on for a change!

Team news – AC Milan miss Ibrahimovic and Pirlo.

Verdict: AC Milan to win at 11/10.

Heracles Almelo vs Heerenveen – home win at evens.

Heracles have under-achieved a lot this season and although they’re hardly world-beaters, they’re still worthy of a better Eredivisie placing and their artificial turf will no doubt help them out yet again today as they seek to improve their position. They’ve won eight out of thirteen at home this season despite not having a particularly good campaign (in my view) and have averaged scoring over two goals per home game so they should be taken seriously here, especially on the back of three consecutive games in which they’ve bagged fourteen goals. Heracles won here 3-1 last season and in such a rich vein of form, I wouldn’t bet against them doing the same again, especially with Heerenveen looking vulnerable currently. Heerenveen are without a win in four games, losing three times along the way, so morale is lessening. They needed a last-gasp equaliser against Vitesse Arnhem last match to claim a much-needed point to stop the rot but things still aren’t great and they could really struggle against their in-form hosts today as a result. Heerenveen have only scored in two out of those four games and with important defender Jong-A-Pin, important midfielder Elm, Serbian starlet Djuricic, and even back-up full-back Kopic so Heerenveen are in for a long game, in my view.

Therefore, my call is the home win here.

Team news – Heracles Almelo miss Rendla and Maertens whereas Heerenveen miss Vandenbussche, Jong-A-Pin, Elm, Kopic, and Djuricic.

Verdict: Heracles Almelo to win at evens.

Libertad Asuncion vs Olimpia Asuncion – over 2.5 goals at evens.

Three out of Libertad’s four home games this season have gone over 2.5 goals whereas four out of Olimpia’s five away games have gone over 2.5 goals. Libertad are focusing on the Copa Libertadores and due to that fact, they should really rest players tonight after their tough game in Peru a few days ago against Universidad San Martin and also considering that they’re hosting Colombian side Once Caldas Manizales in a few days times so I don’t see we’ll see a full-strength Libertad here, hence the away win appealing at 9/5. However, Olimpia bafflingly lost at home to Rubio Nu last match and need to bounce back to remind themselves why they’re where they are in the table – because they score goals. Defensively, Olimpia are vulnerable and they could struggle here if they don’t convert their chances but this is an “eternal derby” so they should really be motivated and should get a good result here too. Head-to-heads don’t reflect favourably on my selection because Olimpia haven’t been as good as they are now for some years but I think we’ll see a change tonight so my call is over 2.5 goals at evens.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at evens.

Union Comercio vs Universidad San Martin – over 2.5 goals at evens.

Newly-promoted hosts facing the biggest club in Peru currently? Over 2.5 goals looks good to me. The hosts have everything to prove here and nothing to lose so I think Union Comercio will look to make life hard for Univeridad tonight. Universidad had a draining game with ten men against Libertad Asuncion of Paraguay just a few days ago and with a trip to Mexico to face San Luis looming large, I think we’ll see them resting players here. However, they do possess one of the strongest benches in Peru in my eyes so they should still give their hosts a good game here, enough so for them to win the game, in my view. That said, the 1×2 market is dubious here so I’m staying with the option of goals. Either way, with the hosts eager to prove themselves and the visitors being a very potent side even at the most average of times, my call is over 2.5 goals here.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at evens.

Lech Poznan vs Jagiellonia Bialystok – home win at 4/5.

The pitch in Poznan may be terrible but I have to fancy Lech here. The odds are decent despite Lech not really impressing under Bakero lately as they’ve become a very machine-esque side with little flambuoyancy. That said, on this pitch, it’s easy to see why because you can’t play a passing game on it. However, Lech’s ability to attack hasn’t changed and that’s why they do tend to still win games and I think that they should here. Jagiellonia have had a great Ekstraklasa campaign thus far but they’re missing Grosicki immeasurably with Frankowski really struggling to hold the attacking line on his own. Replacements and alternatives have been tried and Jagiellonia are a decent side but I don’t see them scoring against Lech’s iron defence today. If Lech take the lead then they should edge this game and with Latvian starlet Rudnevs being arguably the best striker in Poland currently, the chance is always going to be there for Lech to win so my call is the home win at 4/5.

Team news – Lech Poznan miss Bandrowski, Murawski, Chrapek, and Wojtkowiak whereas Jagiellonia Bialystok miss Burkhardt, Grzelak, and Makuszewski.

Verdict: Lech Poznan to win at 4/5.

Cracovia Krakow vs Korona Kielce – over 2.5 goals at 11/10.

Desperate displays from Cracovia Krakow versus one of the most potent sides in the Ekstraklasa at the moment? Over 2.5 goals for me, assuming that the below players are indeed passed fit. Cracovia have no concept of holding a lead at the moment but they’re somehow scoring a lot of goals whereas Korona are scoring goals due to their quality and defending like idiots for reasons unknown. Cracovia are confident as they’re unbeaten in four games whereas Korona have had their confidence knocked by results going against them lately. However, with Korona likely to dictate play here and their last two games having gone over 2.5 goals due to scoring freely and defending poorly, I think we’ll see over 2.5 goals here, especially with experiened Niedzielan in attack for Korona and defender Golanski absent.

Team news – Korona Kielce miss Vukovic, Puri, and Golanski whilst having doubts over Niedzielan, Korzym, and Hernani, although all three of those doubts should have recovered from their illness in time for this game.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 11/10.

Gorzow Wielkopoloski vs Kolejarz Stroze – home win at 7/5.

This could be Gorzow’s last game as a club due to financial issues and their players are likely to give a rousing display as to impress potential future employers rather than to honour the club that they play for. Either way, they have to do that or end up on the scrap-heap and I doubt any of them can afford that. Gorzow are strong at home and although their players haven’t been paid in about fourth months approximately, they’re still battled hard and even got a credible draw at Ruch Radzionkow last match. Gorzow work hard and if they take their chances then they should beat a poor away side like Kolejarz today. Kolejarz just don’t score goals away from home whilst conceding freely so in some ways, this is very much the ideal opponent for Gorzow at the moment. As this could be the last game ever for Gorzow as we know them, I think odds of 7/5 on the home win against such a poor away side are rather generous here so my call is for Gorzow to win at 7/5.

Verdict: Gorzow Wielkopoloski to win at 7/5.

Alcorcon vs Cartagena – home win at 11/10.

I’ve waxed lyrical often enough about Alcorcon in these past few weeks due to their outstanding home record and I’m going with them again today. Cartagena have ben dismal on the road lately, losing two consecutive games without even scoring a goal so I don’t rate their chances here, especially with ex-Real Zaragoza playmaker Longras absent, not to mention defender Chus Herrero. To beat Alcorcon away from home, you need to either score a lot of goals or defend really well and at the moment, Cartagena don’t look capable of doing either of those things. Alcorcon are a good attacking side and score goals for fun so I do think that they’ll improve on their already impressive record of eleven wins from fifteen Segunda Liga home games today against a good but susceptible Cartagena side with a couple of notable absentees today.

Team news – Cartagena miss Chus Herrero and Longras.

Verdict: Alcorcon to win at 11/10.
