Eastern European Football Teams
Free…are going to take over the world! Has anybody but me noticed this? Or is it just another figment of my imagination? Let’s discuss this!
1. Two Russian sides have won the UEFA Cup over the last 4 years. Prior to that memorable occasion in Lisbon where CSKA Moscow lifted the trophy, no Russian side had ever reached the final of the UEFA Cup.
2. CSKA Moscow, Shakhtar Donetsk, Metalist Kharkiv and Dynamo Kiev all overcome opposition that are frankly better than them in the last round of the UEFA Cup. The only vague allowance I’d make is CSKA Moscow perhaps, but even so, given the strength of the English league, I’d still lean towards an Aston Villa victory in a logical manner. But no, the Eastern Europeans are hell-bent on defying all odds.
3. Two of the biggest surprise packages in the Champions League this season were Belarus’ BATE Borisov and Romania’s CFR Cluj, both playing some memorable games and some unlucky football. Not many people can tell you a lot about these two sides, but their performances emphasised a real turning in the tide.

My tips:
Now if you’re looking at trebles then look no further than CSKA Moscow, Dynamo Kiev and Paris Saint-Germain. However, my biggest call of the night is for Zenit St Petersburg to win at Udinese. Why? Because the Italian league cannot cope with other leagues these days – their play is too slow. Udinese have been unbelievably fortunate to qualify as far as they have and they’re facing a very good side, a side that is capable of winning this game. That is my big tip of the night – away win for the Russians! Don’t let me down, Advocaat!
