FC Honka Espoo vs HJK Helsinki

Free

Today’s featured game is in the Veikkausliiga and features heavyweights FC Honka Espoo and HJK Helsinki. These two sides were amongst pre-season favourites to lift the Veikkausliiga crown this year and both are in good positions to maintain their case for a serious title challenge. Hosts FC Honka Espoo are trailing league leaders HJK Helsinki by four points entering this game but a home win here would certainly open things up as we enter the final stretch of the Finnish season. However, FC Honka Espoo have had to endure a torrid game in Azerbaijan mid-week where they crashed out of the UEFA Europa League Qualifiers to surprise package Karabakh Agdam. This trip is one that will test the endurance and fitness of footballers so we’ll have to see just how well FC Honka Espoo can play after that. However, they couldn’t have picked a better time to play HJK Helsinki, who are without a win in three games now. Both sides really need the points in this game so it should be a fantastic game with plenty of goals. Something to bear in mind are that FC Honka Espoo are the biggest goalscorers in the Veikkausliiga at home, averaging nearly three goals per game. They’re also one of the lowest conceding sides at home with an average of less than a goal conceded per home game. FC Honka Espoo have some good momentum for this game as they’ve won two on the bounce now and will be hungry for the title after last year’s unfortunate finish as runners-up. If they’re serious about their title challenge, they have to win this game, no questions asked. There’s no getting away from the fact that these two sides tend to play out a draw but when in Espoo last time around, FC Honka Espoo were victorious. They’re more than capable of doing the same again this time around and I think at 11/8 it’s certainly worth a bet.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

FC Honka Espoo vs HJK Helsinki – home win at 11/8 – see introduction for full details.

SV Ried vs Rapid Vienna – home win at 6/4. As I’ve mentioned previously, SV Ried are one of the best sides in Austra on their own turf. Today they’re boosted by the fact that Rapid Vienna had a very long 120 minutes of football in Cyprus mid-week where they eventually qualified for the next round of the UEFA Europa League Qualifiers. Rapid Vienna have impressed me this season but they’re going to have a weary squad and they’re travelling to a real fortress here. In addition to the above information, SV Ried have won this fixture for two seasons running now without even conceding a goal. For those reasons, a home win at 6/4 looks inviting.

Austria Karnten vs Sturm Graz  – away win at evens. Austria Karten are a poor side in poor form. In fact, they’re pointless, which is an apt double-entendre. Sturm Graz are one of the best sides in Austria and their record of two wins from two games without so much as conceding a goal goes some distance to emphasising that fact. I’m surprised the odds for this selection is evens but I’ll ride it – grudgingly, of course!!

Chernomorets Burgas vs Cherno More Varna – away win at 8/5. This is a bet I’m quietly (how “quiet” can a popular blog actually be?!) liking the look of. These two sides are rivals geographically but it’s not one of the most hostile rivalries around. Indeed, Cherno More Varna actually use Chernomorets Burgas’ stadium Lazur for their European games, the most recent of which was their defeat to PSV Eindhoven mid-week. Returning to this ground is something that Cherno More Varna should be able to do with relative ease – they know the pitch well by now. Out of the two sides, the visitors are some way better than the hosts and will look to prove that today. Despite a frustrating game mid-week for the visitors, I think 8/5 on an away win here looks good.

Slovacko vs Sigma Olomouc – away win at 13/8. I’m racking my brains to find why the odds of an away win are 13/8 but I’m just not finding a reason. The hosts bought their way into the division and have a decent side at the best of times. The visitors are the better side and come into this game with another morale-boosting victory over Scotland’s Aberdeen mid-week. That game wasn’t one that required a great deal of graft. Indeed, I’d probably consider it to be a slightly more energetic training session than anything! Sigma Olomouc will be up for this game and ready to launch an assault on the Gambrinus Liga and I just don’t think Slovacko are good enough to prevent them from winning here today.

Slovan Liberec vs Brno – home win at 5/6. Hosts Slovan Liberec may be without a win after two games in this campaign but they’re still the better side here. They’ve had a mild distraction from the Gambrinus Liga with two games against Liechtenstein’s Vaduz, which they won comfortably. They’re gradually easing themselves into this season and I think today is the day they claim their first three points. Brno aren’t as good as they used to be and they’re notably poor travellers. Interestingly, they’ve taken four points from six this season and are yet to concede a goal, which makes this call a little risky, but not espescially so in my eyes because the hosts are the better side, as I mentioned earlier. 5/6 is a good set of odds for this game but keep punt levels to “cautious”.

Coventry City vs Ipswich Town  – win at 17/10. For those of you that aren’t aware, former Manchester United legend Roy Keane is now in charge of Ipswich Town. He’s notorious for running a tight ship with a hard-working side that functions efficiently. Honestly, I think the partnership of him and Ipswich Town couldn’t be better. Ipswich Town had the home form to gain promotion last season but their away form let them down. Roy Keane will no doubt straighten this out with his miraculous Championship ways. Ipswich Town are actually worth a bet to obtain promotion this season because they’ve got all the necessary credentials to do it. Regarding today’s game though – the visitors are better than the hosts. Coventry City actually seem to be getting worse as the years go by. I’ll be surprised if they manage to stay in the division this year, actually. Odds of 17/10 on an away win are interesting to me and I think it’s worth a bet.

Freiburg vs Hamburger SV – away win at 11/10. People are reading too much into Hamburger’s defeat against Danish side Randers. Whereas I concede that it is a ridiculous result that shouldn’t have occurred, I would hasten to point out that Hamburger SV won the first leg in Denmark with a great deal of ease and probably suffered from a lack of motivation in the home leg. The quality of Martin Jol’s players is still present, as are their impressive new summer acquisitions. Freiburg are a newly promoted outfit who are resilient but shouldn’t be able to compete with a superior Hamburger SV today on any day of the week. An away win here at 11/10 looks good.

FC Twente vs PSV Eindhoven – home win at 6/4. This is a risky call but I’m going to go with it. FC Twente have come on leaps and bounds since Steve McClaren took over. They were desperately unlucky to crash out of the UEFA Champions League Qualifiers earlier this week against Portugal’s Sporting Clube de Lisboa having played very well. Today they’re hosting a PSV Eindhoven side that were stunned by a resilient VVV Venlo at the Philips Stadium in their opening game of the season, drawing 3-3 despite having had the lead twice. PSV Eindhoven seem more focused on selling players and making money this season instead of trying to play well and win trophies. The lack of focus from the visitors and the intensely organised hosts makes me think a home win here is on the cards. Who can complain at odds of 6/4? Obviously, these two sides are both very good so do approach with caution.

VVV Venlo vs ADO Den Haag – home win with -1.75 handicap at 15/8. After their impressive result in Eindhoven on the opening day of the season, VVV Venlo host an ADO Den Haag side that is suffering from injuries. They’re down to their third choice goalkeeper now and look to be favourites to finish bottom of the Eredivisie this year. Despite both sides having been promoted from the Eerste Divisie last year, the hosts are looking a considerable amount better than the visitors and I thoroughly expect them to win today. However, I’ve been bold and stuck my neck out by calling a home win with a -1.75 handicap at 15/8 because I think they can just about do it as they’re not goal-shy at all.

NAC Breda vs Heracles – home win with -1.75 handicap at 6/4. NAC Breda have played well on all fronts this season with five wins from five competitive games. They’re more than well-prepared for this game and will be buoyant from their relentless success in the UEFA Europa League Qualifiers. They’re looking a good deal more established this season than they did last season and could be well-placed to finish powerfully this season in the Eredivisie. Heracles managed to spring a shock against AZ Alkmaar in their opening game but Heracles are one of the sides that can pull this off once in a blue moon but only ever at home – they are definitely not an away side! They’re travelling to a side that has already played a lot of competitive football this season and a I thoroughly expect to beat them with a -1.75 handicap at 6/4.

Alta vs Moss – home win at 4/5. The hosts have been in good form lately with three wins from five games and are unbeaten in their last three. Their home form shows that Alta prefer their games on the road rather than at home. That said, they’re entertaining a Moss side that have tasted success just once away from home this season, suffering five defeats from eight games on the road. Despite that fact, Moss have played well lately and will be hard opposition for Alta. I predict you’ll see two sides lock horns with a lot of blood, sweat and tears in this game. However, I think the lengthy trip north for Moss might just work in favour of the hosts as legs grow tired and I think a cheeky punt on a home win at 4/5 could be worthwhile.

Stavanger vs Honefoss – away win at 3/4. Honefoss are well and truly the form side in the Adeccoligaen currently with five straight wins. Their away record is very admirable; five wins, two draws and just one defeat from eight away games. Today they face Stavanger, a side they are battling hard to pull away from the relegation zone but this battle just isn’t going their way at all. With just one win and three defeats in five games, this season is beginning to look very ominous for Stavanger, particularly with their goal-shy home record of just one goal per game. They’re also one of the biggest conceders in the division at home. For those reasons, an away win at 3/4 for Honefoss has some good value to it.

Korona Kielce vs Lech Poznan – away win at 10/11. After a bizarre game with Norway’s Fredrikstad mid-week, Lech Poznan will be looking forward to returning to winning ways with what should be a relatively simple game with newly-promoted Korona Kielce. The visitors weren’t exactly over-exerted mid-week as they’d won the first leg in Norway 6-1 so they should be fresh enough to take the game to Korona Kielce today. The hosts may have humbled a decent Polonia Warsaw squad here in their opening game of the season but Lech Poznan are a very different opposition with a lot of talent, particularly in young striker Lewandowski. I can see why the bookies are giving 10/11 on an away win here but I feel it should come in with some ease.

Arka Gdynia vs Legia Warsaw – away win at 5/6. Now these odds do surprise me! How on earth can bookmakers justify odds of 5/6 on an away win here? Legia Warsaw are arguably the best side in the country and are relentlessly boring efficient in disposing of sides. What could be a better game for the visitors after their difficult tussle with Danes Brondby mid-week than to travel to arguably the worst side in the division, a side I consider very likely to be relegated this season? I’m scratching my head but I’m not getting anywhere so I’ll just blurt out “BACK LEGIA TO WIN!” and promptly run to the nearest bookmakers to do the same thing myself.

Politehnica Iasi vs Poli Timisoara – away win at evens. The scourge of Shakhtar Donetsk, Poli Timisoara, travel to face relegation candidates Politehnica Iasi today with the knowledge that they’re more than capable of winnig this game. They’re buoyant from their unlikely mid-week success and will look to carry that momentum into this game. I was surprised that Politehnica Iasi managed to stay in the division last year; I’ll be baffled if they do the same again this year. Summarised; two sides of different footballing classes compete today but there surely can only be an away win on the cards? Evens looks great value here.

Steaua Bucharest vs CFR Cluj – home win at 6/5. Hosts Steaua Bucharest are looking to build on their impressive start to the season with victory over title rivals CFR Cluj. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t feel CFR Cluj carry the same threat as they did a few seasons ago. They seem weaker; more predictable, perhaps. The hosts are in a very strong position to win this game in terms of momentum and morale. The visitors won their opening game of the season so they won’t be too short on momentum themselves. However, I’m calling a change to occur here via a home win instead of this game descending into a draw as it normally does! Odds of 6/4 could be great value.

Ruzomberok vs Slovan Bratislava – away win at 5/4. Slovan Bratislava are rapidly becoming the side to beat in the Corgon Liga. They’ve got a very impressive record in their current campaign with three wins from three games without even conceding a goal. They’ll be disappointed to have lost to Olympiakos Piraeus over two legs recently but will no doubt concede that they faced a very good side. I’m calling them to bounce back with victory today over relegation-threatened Ruzomberok, who find themselves second from bottom with no win in four games. The hosts are capable of playing better and being hard to beat but I think Slovan Bratislava have too much momentum to not win this game. Odds of 5/4 are very much worthwhile in my eyes.

Interblock Ljubljana vs Celje – home win at 10/11. After their demoralising defeat at home to Metalurg Donetsk mid-week, supposed title-contenders Interblock Ljubljana will be looking to bounce back with victory over Celje. The visitors are a little weaker than normal having lost talented full-back Jure Travner to English Championship outfit Watford in July. They’ve won just one game from three and that was against current bottom club Drava. Today they face a good Interblock Ljubljana side that are a little short on confidence at the moment. However, a home win does look somewhat imminent so it’s worth taking at 10/11.

Rudar Velenje vs Domzale – home win at 4/5. I’m a little unsure on this game because it’s one of those that just looks too inviting, you know? Rudar Velenje had a very good season last year and are well on their way to having another good season with three wins from three games. In fact, they’re not yet conceded a goal in the Prva Liga. However, the side they’re hosting today – Domzale – is a sleeping giant of sorts. There’s no doubt in my mind they’re capable of putting up a fight but their form is luring me into some sense of security, as they’ve not managed a win in any of their three games yet. With the above information, feel free to make up your own minds but I think a home win could be worth taking at 4/5.

Orgryte vs IFK Goteborg – home win with double chance at 5/4. This is the perfect “ride the wave” game. IFK Goteborg are on a crazy downward spiral and just can’t seem to pull themselves out of it. Orebro haven’t been playing too well lately with just one win in five games but to their credit, they’ve only lost once in those five games. They’ve only lost two games at home this season and are a tough nut to crack when they want to be. This has to be one of the last sides IFK Goteborg wanted to play at the moment given their lacklustre football, but they’re stuck with playing the game. IFK Goteborg have only won twice on the road this season and can boast a meager one win from five games, including two defeats, both of which were on the road. Frankly, 5/4 for a home win with double chance looks really, really good.

Halmstads vs Kalmar – away win at 10/11. Kalmar are enjoying a rich vein of form lately with six straight Allsvenskan victories, including an impressive win against title rivals Elfsborg Boras. They’re one of the best sides in the league and are travelling to face Halmstads, a side with no wins in five games and that has suffered two straight defeats. They’re edging dangerously close to the relegation zone and should be worried. The visitors are in too good form here to let it slip, however, and I thoroughly expect them to win this game comfortably. Odds of 10/11 are a complete gift here!!

Assyriska Sodertalje vs Mjallby Solvesborg – away win at 8/5. I should give up writing about Mjallby Solvesborg because you all know the drill – they’re the best side in this league and there’s not a hope in hell they’ll still be here next season – they’re destined for the Allsvenskan. This magic run of theirs has to end sometime but I can’t see it today. Assyriska Sodertalje have had a good season but two straight defeats has bruised their morale and increased the chance of an away win here. I can’t quite fathom why it’s 8/5 for an away win here but this is very much recommended for you all!

Bursaspor vs Kasimpasa – home win with -1.75 handicap at 7/5. I’m expecting big things from Bursaspor this year after an impressive campaign last year. They’ve got the players to make it into a European spot for next year. They’re playing host to newly-promoted Kasimpasa, a side who aren’t good enough to be on the same field as Bursaspor. If the hosts turn up for this game, which they should, then I’m happy to take the -1.75 handicap at 7/5. However, do approach with caution as this is the first game of each side’s season.

Denizlispor vs Fenerbahce – away win at 5/6. Fenerbahce have strengthened their squad over summer and enter this game on the back of a win against Besiktas in the Turkish Super Cup and with the knowledge that they’ve reached the next round of the UEFA Europa League after two-legged success over Budapest Honved. They’re travelling to a decent Denizlispor but one they’ve beaten here for two years running now. 5/6 is a good set of odds for an away win when considering the above information!

Gaziantepspor vs Galatasaray – away win at 5/6. The visitors have strengthened their squad over summer with their most notable addition being playmaker Elano. They’ve already got a good squad but this is an impressive acquisition. They’re travelling to an average Gaziantepspor but they shouldn’t be troubled, really. They’ve played some competitive games this season so I do expect Galatasaray to win this game and it’s certainly worthwhile at 5/6, particularly as they won here last year too.
