Fluminense vs Corinthians

Free

Today’s featured game is in Brazil’s Serie A and is contested between relegation-battlers Fluminense and ever-rich Corinthians. With the season gradually drawing to a close, it’s time for sides with title aspirations and those that wish to avoid relegation to start getting serious. Trailing leaders Palmeiras by fifteen points is something of a given that Corinthians won’t be in this year’s title race, something that could have been disputed given their magnificent early season form. However, no wins in four, including two defeats along the way, seems to suggest that Corinthians are happy to accept mid-table annonymity. Whereas that would be a great achievement for 99% of the sides promoted from Brazil’s Serie B, giants Corinthians would have no doubt liked more but may simply have to bide their time. Hosts Fluminense are having to fight very hard to stay in this division currently. They’re bottom of the league at the present time and are eight points from safety. Their symptoms are all too common for bottom-placed sides everywhere as they’ve not scored enough goals thus not won enough games. However, as I said earlier, it’s time to get serious or get heading downwards. Fluminense have only been beaten twice in their last five games, winning once and drawing twice. They’re actually unbeaten in their last three home games domestically, winning their last home game 3-2 against an impressive Avai. Fluminense need to continue this form to stay in the division so they have all the motivation that a side can possibly require to win a game of football – survival. Corinthians, however, don’t really have a lot to play for. They’re mid-table, out-of-form, no genuine chance of a title challenge and no genuine chance of relegation. Corinthians have only won two away games all season and a trip to Fluminense to play a game they don’t need to win seems the least likely occasion for them to turn up and try to amend that record. Although it’s merely scratching at the surface of the usual value bets I manage to dig out, I’m pretty happy that Fluminense have a good enough chance of winning this game to make 11/8 on the home a worthwhile bet.
