Huracan vs Quilmes

Today’s secondary featured game is the Primera Division encounter in Argentina between Huracan and Quilmes. Both sides are in deep relegation mire in the Argentinian averages table and thus points are very valuable indeed in this game so don’t be surprised to see some cards flying around here.

A lot of people write Huracan off rather easily but I can’t say that I’m one of them. Defensively-speaking, Huracan are a stout unit and have shown a lot of promise in this campaign, in my view. They’ve only lost once during their four Primera Division games but have yet to win any, which is presumably why people are going against them so frequently. However, Huracan’s decision to strengthen their attack over the transfer window has paid huge dividends, in my view, with Huracan bagging five goals already in this campaign, which is nearly a third of what they scored in the Apertura over nineteen games so you can see what I mean. They brought in Campora and Quiroga from Colo Colo in Chile, not to mention midfielder Maidana from Spartak Moscow and Guerra from Universidad Catolica so this Huracan side is definitely stronger offensively now that they’ve got someone to work with big Rolando Zarate in attack. Huracan have generally scored goals so far this season too so it will logically take goals to stop them, something which I don’t believe Quilmes can bring to this game.

Following Quilmes’ defeat against Tigre, manager Madelon resigned and was subsequently replaced by Ricardo Lombardi, who is well-known for his defensive tactics with Tigre prior to his appointment. However, I don’t think there’s much he can do to bail Quilmes out here as he’s got no time to sign players and from a quality perspective, Quilmes are the weakest side in the Primera Division right now. They’ve played four Clausura games thus far, some of which were hard and some of which were easy, but all of which were lost. They’ve scored just two goals during that run whilst conceding seven goals, which is an average of nearly two goals per game, hence their predicament. Defensively, Quilmes were actually surprisingly strong away from home in the Apertura, conceding just over a goal per away game and only losing four out of their nine away games. However, the way they’ve been playing so far this season is just poor and it’s no wonder that they’ve shipped so many goals. Quilmes need their solid defence because their attack is ineffectual and if they adopt such tactics here against a goalscoring Huracan side then they’re going to lose, to be frank. I don’t expect Lombardi to take that approach whatsoever though – it’s not his style. Instead, I expect Quilmes to sit back and test how good Huracan’s attack actually is and that’ll make this game a tight one, if indeed it does go that way.

However, from what I’ve seen of Huracan so far this season, they’ve got enough firepower to break a stiff Quilmes resolve tonight. I’m a bit concerned about whether Quilmes will give their new manager a “honeymoon period” by springing a surprise here but barring superstition, there’s no real reason that Huracan can’t win this game. They’re a better side than Quilmes, they’re playing quite well, and they’re far more experienced in this type of position than their opponents are. For me, the home win at 11/10 represents some value tonight.

Verdict: Huracan to win at 11/10.
