Mainz 05 vs Nurnberg

Free

A quick warning – today’s games look bad for accumulators as there’s only one side I like as a “definite win” so be very careful here if placing anything other than a single.

Today’s featured game is the German Bundesliga encounter between Mainz 05 and Nurnberg. Mainz 05 have been over-achieving so far this season and interestingly still occupy second place in the table despite a barren run of form lately. Visitors Nurnberg are perched mid-table but the threat of relegation is ever-present in a side somewhat devoid of stars but they’ll be partially pleased not to be in the bottom three of the Bundesliga as we near the pivotal Christmas period.

Hosts Mainz 05 finally broke their dreary run of four consecutive games in all competitions without a win by winning 2-3 at Borussia Moenchengladbach. Mainz 05’s manager Tuchel spoke about this game favourably, as if Mainz 05 had turned a corner and were ready to demonstrate their apparent ability again. To be fair, there’s not a lot else that a good manager can say in such scenarios but I still think he’s lying! Mainz 05 are a very good home side and are very hard to beat but they’re not a Bundesliga top six side – they lack the finesse and consistency to be one. Nonetheless, even before this season, Mainz 05 have long been a force at home and few sides have known that moreso than opponents Nurnberg, who have lost here for four consecutive visits. Mainz 05 will bring confidence into this game following their away win last time out and with no injury concerns ahead of this game, I fancy Mainz 05 to get back on track with their fans behind them and the ever-present potential of Andre Schurrle in attack.

Of course, being strong at home isn’t necessarily enough on its own, which is why I’m pleased to report that Mainz 05 are hosting Nurnberg. Nurnberg have gotten drastically worse in their last two games by leaking six goals (including three at home to newly-promoted Kaiserslautern last match!) and losing both games. Morale is getting lower and it’s unlikely to improve tonight. Why? Well, to defeat Mainz 05, you have to prevent them from scoring the first goal as they’re a damn good defensive unit and can generally hold a lead. To do that, you need a good, solid, defensive backbone. Nurnberg occasionally do demonstrate their defensive ability but are unlikely to achieve that tonight with centre-back Javier Pinola suspended and partnering centre-back Per Nilsson injured. Even midfielder Judt is allegedly a doubt for this game, although you know what mind games are like before games nowadays. So, to be blunt, Nurnberg have big defensive issues here and if they fall behind then I thoroughly expect them to lose this game.

Therefore, the big question is whether Mainz 05 will score or not. I won’t lie to you here; scoring is not a forté of Mainz 05’s. Hell, they’ve not managed to score a single goal in three consecutive home games so this bet certainly carries some risk. Nonetheless, if they can’t score against a potential relegation-battling Nurnberg side that is devoid of both centre-backs then they’re nowhere near as good a side as manager Tuchel believes. Mainz 05 really should have too much for Nurnberg with the above in mind, enough so for me to bravely state that Mainz 05 could and probably should be shorter to win this game. I quite fancy Mainz 05 to win to nil at 11/5 as the odds are generous, Nurnberg are poor travellers, and Mainz 05 are excellent in defence. However, I’ll stick with the home win here as my call and let you guys decide if you want to take the bolder option.

Verdict: Mainz 05 to win at 9/10 – why not bet on this game now at Bwin?

Friday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Gimnasia De La Plata vs Godoy Cruz de Mendoza – home win with draw no bet at 21/20.

For me, the odds are set incorrectly for this game. The Argentinian Primera Division does not operate like the average league table and thus the tables you’ll see in most places don’t reflect the actual standings or the relevance of the fixtures.
The first thing to take into consideration here is that the hosts need the points more than their opponents. Gimnasia De La Plata are four points away from safety with four games remaining in the Primera Division – if they’ve not passed River Plate and Huracan by then then they’ll be relegated. Gimnasia have trips to two massive clubs remaining too – Boca Juniors and Racing Club Avellaneda respectively – and I don’t see them winning either of those games. Therefore, Gimnasia have to target their two home games (the other against newly-promoted All Boys) to try and keep their Primera Division status. You can see the desperate nature of tonight’s hosts in their last few games in which they’ve kept three consecutive clean sheets despite facing both Banfield and Velez Sarsfield respectively, both of which are better than Gimnasia by some distance. Gimnasia’s other game was a 1-0 win at home to a very poor Quilmes side and to be honest, that exposes Gimnasia’s weakness massively – goalscoring. They’re good in defence when playing at home but in front of goal they’re somewhat wasteful.

However, that could be aided by the injury of Uruguayan defender Curbelo, who misses this game for Godoy Cruz de Mendoza. The visitors won’t be overly concerned as their ethos is to attack and score goals, which is rather admirable in a rather tactical Primera Division nowadays. The attacking prowess of Godoy Cruz de Mendoza does bother me; they’ve played really well this year. However, Gimnasia are really stubborn at home and they need to get something from this game so I’m not sure Godoy will have it all their own way here, especially if they fall behind.

Returning to my point earlier though – Godoy do have motivation to win this game too, albeit not as much as their hosts. Godoy Cruz de Mendoza need just one more point from their last four games to claim a historic Copa Libertadores place and they’ll be keen to achieve that for obvious reasons. However – to me, that says “don’t lose any game unnecessarily and the job is done” rather than “go and win the next game”. Godoy’s mentality on the field is attacking but I’m not sure they’ll go for the win here when a draw will suffice. With that in mind, and the injured Curbelo, I’m not sure why Godoy Cruz de Mendoza are such blatant favourites to win this game.

This is obviously a risky call as Gimnasia simply don’t score enough goals, hence their predicament in the first place. However, Godoy Cruz de Mendoza have not only lost two out of their last three visits to face Gimnasia but they also lost their last away game against a very poor Quilmes side so I think they’re gradually being exposed and the chance is there for that to occur again tonight. Either way, I don’t see Gimnasia losing this game – they simply can’t afford to do so – so my call is the home win with draw no bet.

Verdict: Gimnasia De La Plata to win with draw no bet at 21/20.

Racing Genk vs AA Gent – under 2.5 goals at 13/10.

This has to be the boldest call of the day, given the statistics on show!

However, I do seriously think this game will go under 2.5 goals. Why? Well, Genk have amassed an impressive tally of forty-three goals in sixteen Eerste Klasse games, which is a very dangerous record, I’m sure you’ll all agree. Twenty-eight of those goals have been scored by strikers, fourteen of which have been scored by prodigy Jelle Vossen. Vossen is basically the heartbeat of their attack despite the ability of both Barda and Ogunjimi. However, Vossen is injured – he won’t be playing again until after the winter break. Therefore, Genk’s patchy form looks set to continue. They won easily at Charleroi in their last game but to be honest, I think if me and you guys got a team together to play Charleroi right now then we’d do pretty well – Charleroi are in a terrible state at the moment. Gent are a much better side than Charleroi and they’ll be very keen not to lose this one. Gent have additional motivation to do this in front of their small group of travelling away fans after their unbelievable 4-4 draw at home to Westerlo despite having been in cruise control for the majority of the game. Gent got complacent and were punished, to be blunt. I don’t even remember the last time Westerlo scored four goals on the road because they just don’t do that – that tells you how bad Gent were, or how lazy they became, more accurately. A bigger game calls for bigger attention, however, and I think Gent will smell blood here. Genk are not playing as well as their league position suggests of late and I think a stubborn Gent side could prove very tough opponents for Genk here, particularly without the star of the Genk team.

Two out of the last three games between these two sides at this ground have gone under 2.5 goals. Both sides are in massive “over 2.5 goals” phases at the moment, hence the risk element of this bet, but I think the odds on this occurring are a little longer than they should be so under 2.5 goals is my call for this game tonight.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 13/10.

Lokomotiva Zagreb vs Hrvatski Dragovoljac – under 2.5 goals at evens.

Somehow, Lokomotiva Zagreb have been deemed 1/2 favourites to win this game. Why?! They’re nowhere near the side they were last year and goalscoring has been a terrible problem for them this season in the Prva Liga. They’ve got no problems in defence – they can keep the majority of the division out, if they so desire – but they really struggle in front of goal. I’ll accept that Lokomotiva are playing the worst side in the Prva Liga in this game but even so – seven goals in eight home games this season does not impress me at all. Four out of Lokomotiva’s last five home games have gone under 2.5 goals due to them not even scoring in three of those games and although I would accept that they’ve faced some tough opponents lately, the absence of potency from their game since last season is evident. Returning midfielder Males will help Lokomotiv’s cause but in his place on the absentee list will be another midfielder (Antolic) and defender Bagaric, although Antolic’s absence is more significant in terms of Bagaric having missed most of the season already. Hrvatski are nothing more than a battling side – they simply cannot score goals in general though. However, a barren run of form due to no goalscoring threat has left them bereft of confidence and even energy in some games. Lokomotiva may miss Horvat in defence through suspension but it really shouldn’t matter with the above in mind as the visitors simply don’t take their chances. It doesn’t help Hrvatski’s limited attack that three important midfielders miss this game – Plazonic, Jurin, and Jazvic respectively – so I really don’t see an away goal here.

As long as the visitors don’t do anything stupid here, like scoring a goal, then I really fancy under 2.5 goals in this game. I just don’t see enough in Loko’s front line to damage Hrvatski substantially and although the visitors do tend to leak goals, I don’t see Loko scoring more than two against them. I don’t think Loko are worth 1/2 to beat anyone in the Prva Liga, including Hrvatski, but under 2.5 goals at evens definitely appeals to me here.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at evens.

Swansea City vs Portsmouth – Swansea City to keep a clean sheet at 11/10.

I see a lot of people backing Swansea City at ludicrously short odds and often find myself sat here wondering “why?. I’m a big advocate of Swansea – I admire that a side like them can do so well without having the big names of bitter rivals Cardiff City, or moneybags Queens Park Rangers. However, Swansea’s biggest flaw is having an inconsistent and fairly impotent attack. They don’t score enough goals, simply put, so how anyone can consider backing them to win in most of their home games at odds of 3/4 and shorter is unbelievable. However, Swansea’s massive strength is their defence, which is the best in the division when playing at home. They’ve only conceded twice in nine home games in the Championship thanks to a stout backline and only once in their last six home games so their defensive prowess is there for all to see. I rate visitors Portsmouth as a better side than the league table suggests but still – they’ve failed to score for two consecutive away games and they’ve scored six goals in nine away games this season so I’m going to take a chance on their attack not showing up for a third consecutive away game today.

I can’t deny that Swansea should win this game but I’m not touching them at such short odds when their attack isn’t as good as it could be. However, backing them to keep a clean sheet in this game at 11/10 looks something of a gift, as good as Portsmouth can be. Therefore, my call is for Swansea to keep a clean sheet in this game!

Verdict: Swansea City to keep a clean sheet at 11/10.

Lombard Papa vs Debreceni VSC – away win at evens.

Evens on the best side in Hungary winning away from home? Crazy bookies!

Debreceni VSC have been very poor on the road this season, no questions asked – they’ve simply not found their rhythm and they’ve been duly punished in most of their games. They’ve not scored goals and they’ve been leaking goals like a relegation candidate rather than a reigning champion. In fact, had this game been two/three weeks ago then I’d have layed the fuck out of Debreceni VSC as Lombard Papa were in good form. However, despite Lombard Papa’s strong home record, they’ve been absolutely annihlated in their last two home games, losing 1-3 against Ujpest and 0-5 aganist Ferencvaros. They’ve conceded over three-quarters of their goals at home this season in their last two games and although both sides faced have been superior to Lombard Papa, the results by scoreline alone are very unacceptable. Lombard Papa’s game is attacking and if they’re not doing that then they’re sitting ducks because they cannot defend. Lombard were crushed here 1-5 by Debreceni VSC last season and only managed to prevent Debreceni VSC leaving with three points the season before because they scored three goals themselves in a 3-3 draw. Lombard have to score a lot of goals to beat Debreceni VSC traditionally, as does any Soproni Liga side, so I fancy the visitors here in light of Lombard’s recent displays.

Approach with caution as Debreceni VSC have been dire on the road this season but evens is far too generous on the away win here and thus is my call.

Verdict: Debreceni VSC to win at evens.

Atalanta Bergamo vs Livorno – both sides to score at 9/10.

Unlike the average Serie B side, Atalanta Bergamo have no concept of defending. As far as attacking goes, they’re one of the top sides in the division but defensively they’re all over the place. Every time Atalanta have faced a good side at home this season, they’ve conceded i.e. Padova, Torino, Reggina, and even tonight’s opponents Livorno in a cup game. Atalanta will almost certainly score in this game – there’s only been one Serie B game this season where they’ve not scored at home – but their defence can and should be breached here. Livorno’s away record isn’t flattering at all in Serie B but make no mistake here – they’re still one of the top sides in it. Livorno have scored for six consecutive games now and enter this game with confidence, having inflicted Empoli’s first Serie B defeat of the season in their last game. Both sides will fancy this and are good enough to match each other. It therefore makes sense that this game will see both sides scoring and I even fancy a sly dabble on over 2.5 goals at 11/10 as I feel someone is going to win this game, most likely Atalanta (but they’re too short to interest me in the 1×2 market), but my main call is going to be both sides scoring in this game as it looks decent value.

Verdict: Both sides to score at 9/10.

Cambuur Leeuwarden vs RBC Roosendaal – home win at 4/5.

I appreciate that Cambuur aren’t experiencing the greatest of Eerste Divisie campaigns but 4/5 to beat a side that they’re a lot better than is laughably good value! Cambuur struggled at the start of the season because they weren’t taking points at home but that’s changed ever since the 1-1 draw with high-flying RKC Waalwijk. They then overcame a weak Telstar side before more impressively beating Sparta Rotterdam 3-1. Cambuur are finally producing consistently decent displays at home and are finally scoring the goals that we expect them to. I still can’t fathom why they’re 4/5 to win this game, though. RBC are an average side at the best of times and five defeats in seven away games in the Eerste Divisie this season is not a convincing record whatsoever. They’ve lost four consecutive away games, including trips to weak Emmen and AGOVV Appeldoorn sides respectively, so why they’re being given so much respect here is beyond me. Cambuur miss defender Kapralik through suspension but given as they’ve totally abandoned defending this season already, it shouldn’t prove to be too big of a problem. Ultimately, I expect an open game here, which should suit Cambuur far more than RBC, and thus 4/5 on the home win looks far too generous here, despite Cambuur’s fairly sporadic displays this season.

Verdict: Cambuur Leeuwarden to win at 4/5.

Cracovia Krakow vs GKS Belchatow – away win with draw no bet at 4/5.

Mere words alone cannot express my hatred of backing GKS Belchatow away from home in the Ekstraklasa because they’re unreliable as hell! However, here goes…

Cracovia Krakow are in dire straits, to be horribly blunt. The chairman is getting far too involved in the club – he (Filipiak) demoted Slurarski, Stuart, and Matusiak (some of their best players) for effectively “not trying hard enough”. He froze the players’ wages (all the team) because of their frustrating displays and now the players don’t know where they stand. Cracovia could have had a good campaign this year but it’s all going horribly wrong and could end in relegation if they’re not careful. Goalscoring isn’t a problem for Cracovia, which has to be a relief for them, but their defending is atrocious. They’re the only side in the Ekstraklasa that averages conceding over two goals per game and thus their own ability in front of goals is somewhat redundant. They’ve already lost five out of six at home this season so why not again today?

Four defeats in six away games isn’t a convincing record for GKS to be entering this game with. However, it’s only goalscoring which is causing their problems, ironically – their defending has been fine. An emphatic 3-2 win at home to Polonia Warsaw last match should have quelled such issues, however, at least temporarily. Why? Well, GKS have found a new hero in Novak, who bagged a well-earned hat-trick against moneybags Polonia Warsaw and as a result, Novak has now been linked with a move to Polonia Warsaw in the winter transfer window. For now he remains a GKS player, however, and if he plays like he did against Polonia again today then GKS have a very real chance of winning this game.

Like I said earlier – I hate backing GKS away from home because they’re virtually a totally different side on the road. However, even GKS have a good chance here, given the state of disarray that Cracovia are in. Ironically, GKS have a very good away record against Cracovia with two wins from their last three visits to face the minnows from Krakow, so I’m somewhat comforted here as GKS need all the help they can get on the road. Nonetheless, I’d be surprised to see GKS lose this one given the morale they’ve got from their win and given the massive problems that their hosts have. The hosts miss important Mierzejewski and if they miss the players I mentioned earlier (which hasn’t been confirmed specificially for this game yet) then they’ve got real problems here. Therefore, the away win with draw no bet cover at 4/5 intrigues me here.

Verdict: GKS Belchatow to win with draw no bet at 4/5.

Polonia Bytom vs Legia Warsaw – both sides to score at evens.

Legia Warsaw are clearly by far the better of these two sides but there’s something preventing me from taking the obvious away win and it’s one man; Urban, Polonia Bytom’s manager. Why? Well, he was in charge of Legia Warsaw between 2007 and 2010 so there’s not much he doesn’t know about Polonia’s opponents today and to be honest, Legia do have a lot of flaws that can be exploited. I mean, consider their 3-0 win versus Arka Gdynia last week, for example – it’s a very convincing result on paper but it wasn’t a convincing display at all. Indeed, most of the goals appeared to come from Arka’s inability rather than Legia’s ability, which sounds about right in accordance with how sporadically Legia have actually played this season. On paper, they’ve arguably got the best side in the Ekstraklasa but on the field – it just depends who shows up. With the likes of Bruno Mezenga and re-born Radovic, Legia will always present a threat in attack. However, they are prone in defence and if anyone knows their weakness there then it is Jan Urban. Polonia Bytom were unlucky to lose against Lech Poznan last match. Indeed, the blame has been squarely planted on the shoulders of goalkeeper Gasinski, who is expected to be dropped for this game and replaced by Juszczyk. Polonia Bytom are not a particularly good side; in fact, I’d call them one of the weaker sides in the Ekstraklasa. However, they’re still a difficult side to beat at home and I think Legia will have a much harder game than recent results suggest here. Rather than take the obvious away win here, I’ll take both sides to score as I think Legia have too much firepower to not score here and Polonia have too much inside information on Legia not to and the odds are good enough to take a chance on.

Verdict: Both sides to score at evens.

Vaslui vs Pandurii Targu Jiu – over 2.5 goals at 11/10.

The key to this selection is going to be Pandurii scoring, as obvious as that might sound. Vaslui have only conceded in four home games this season but three of them have gone over 2.5 goals. Generally, Vaslui look to score and then control play to see out a low-scoring win, which is quite frustrating as they’re actually a very good side. Still, to make them prove it, you have to score against them and that’s the risk here, hence the good odds available on the selection. For the Pandurii side of the last couple of years, I wouldn’t put anything on Pandurii to score, even if someone gave me the money to do it. However, their new manager has got them playing confident, attacking football and they’ve now scored for four consecutive games, which totals eight goals, which is a record virtually unheard of for a usually defensive Pandurii side. They look better as each game goes by and I really fancy them to cause Vaslui a lot of problems in this game today. Vaslui are definitely good enough to win it but by being a low-scoring side facing an in-form and rejuvenated Pandurii side, there’s something about 1/2 on the home win that really doesn’t appeal to me. However, this game should boast goals one way or another and although I’d steer clear of the 1×2 market, I think over 2.5 goals at 11/10 is worth a shot here as long as both sides play as I expect them to.

Ironically, this fixture ended 2-1 last season! It’s fairly irrelevant now as Pandurii is a very different side to the side that came here last year but it’s interesting to note the possibility of it occurring.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 11/10.

Eskisehirspor vs Manisaspor – away win with draw no bet at 23/20.

This should be a fascinating game! Defensive moguls Eskisehirspor host the flambuoyant Manisaspor – these two sides are a complete contrast of each other so which one triumphs will be the interesting part here.

However, I don’t see the winner being Eskisehirspor, to be blunt. They’ve got their defence playing as strongly as usual, not giving an inch against anyone. Indeed, they somehow fended off Trabzonspor in their last away game to claim a 0-0 draw. However, their points are coming from other sides not scoring rather than themselves causing problems and I expect more of the same today. Although statistics don’t show it too well, Manisaspor are one of the finer attacking sides in the Super Lig and Eskisehirspor know it – they won’t line up in an attacking, open manner here because they’ll be torn apart. Manisaspor’s attacking three with Makukula in the middle are lethal, especially away from home on the counter-attack! Just look at who Manisaspor have played on the road and the results they’ve obtained – they lost 4-2 at Fenerbahce, won 1-3 at Trabzonspor, won 2-3 at Besiktas JK, and won 0-2 at Galatasaray. This Manisaspor side is more than capable of scoring against Eskisehirspor tonight and if they do then the hosts have a real problem because not only are they not a good attacking side but if they become an attacking side then they’ll be destroyed with Manisaspor’s pacey counter-attacks that are currently terrifying the majority of the Super Lig. Whatever happens in this game, I really don’t envision Manisaspor losing this game – they score too many goals, more than I believe Eskisehirspor are actually capable of scoring. Despite the hosts being extremely adept in defence, I’m going to take a chance on the away win with draw no bet at 23/20 as I believe that if this game has a winner then it really should be Manisaspor.

Verdict: Manisaspor to win with draw no bet at 23/20.

Illichivets Mariupol vs Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih – over 2.5 goals at evens.

I can’t write an in-depth preview of this game because writing at great length about two terrible side etches my soul with lava.

However, what I can say is that this game surely to God must have more than 2.5 goals! Both are terrible sides that generally can only defend. However, this season, both have decided to abandon defending and start attacking, which has proven to be an almighty failure. I can’t deny that it’s made the Ukrainian Premier League more entertaining to watch but it’s not in a necessarily beneficial nor complimentary way! Amusingly, only the top three – Shakhtar Donetsk, Dynamo Kiev, and Metalist Kharkiv respectively – have scored more goals at home than Illichivets Mariupol have this season with today’s hosts averaging scoring 1.5 goals per home game. However, even more amusingly, nobody in the division has come close to conceding as many as the hosts do with an average of nearly three goals conceded per home game. Similarly, only a handful of sides have conceded more than Kryvbas have on the road this season so suffice to say that I am expecting goals in this game.

Six out of Illichivets’ eight home games this season have gone over 2.5 goals (their last home game somehow ended 2-6 against a Vorskla side that rarely scores six away goals per season!) and four out of Kryvbas’ last six away games have gone over 2.5 goals too. Neither side is playing particularly well but they’re playing open football and as neither side can defend at the moment, this game has to yield over 2.5 goals here, surely! Both sides need the points and with both sides being seemingly fearless, my call is over 2.5 goals priced generously at evens.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at evens.
