Norwich City vs Leeds United

Free

Today’s featured game is the English League One game between league leaders Norwich City and second-placed Leeds United. Both sides have had great seasons and stand very good chances of gaining promotion to the Championship but there’s still time for that to change, particularly if Leeds United lose today.

Norwich City are running away with the league this season and it’s their consistentcy and clinical finishing which is the cause of it. Norwich play some excellent football and have won four out of their last five games with only Swindon Town taking any points off Norwich in their last five goals with a late-minute equaliser to draw 1-1 at home to Norwich in their last game. Norwich bring some strong momentum into this game as a result of their consistency and are currently the top goalscorers in the division with an average of over two goals scored per game. Norwich have won more home games in League One than any other side with fourteen wins in eighteen games, averaging scoring over two goals per home game and only conceding a goal per game at home thus explaining why they win so many games! Norwich have won thirteen out of their last fourteen home games and are a terrifying force on their own turf, something they should show very easily tonight.

Leeds United enter this game in dire form with just one win in their past five games and now face the very real threat of braving the play-offs instead of the automatic places yet again! Leeds United haven’t scored in either of their last two games, losing both encounters with their most recent defeat being a 2-0 defeat at home to Millwall, a result which moves Millwall to within three points of Leeds United. Leeds picked a bad time to lose their form with so much riding on it and look set to frustrate their supporters further by taking a rocky road to the Championship. Leeds may have won the home leg of this fixture earlier this season but were very fortunate to do so in a game that they were outplayed in and not much has changed since then other than that Leeds now have to get something from this game to keep their push for for automatic promotion alive.

However, Norwich City are simply better than Leeds United are, currently. They’re looking frighteningly potent, extremely consistent, and are playing better football than Leeds are. Leeds are looking goal-shy, bereft of confidence, and frankly look like they’ve lost their bottle. I can’t see Grayson’s men taking anything from what is unequivocally the toughest away game in League One currently so the odds on the home win look good value to me.

Verdict: Norwich City to win at 21/20.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Birmingham City vs Arsenal – lay Arsenal at 7/5.

Birmingham City have been a bit unlucky of late. For two games running now, they’ve been the better side but have still lost their games. Birmingham are basically conceding too many goals and that is a worry for them. However, they’re back on home turf and they’ve had a lot of success here this season. Indeed, only Manchester United have conceded less home goals than Birmingham City have this season and Birmingham City have only lost here twice. Manchester United and Chelsea have both failed to win at this ground this season and I can’t see why a more one-dimensional Arsenal would be any different.

Arsenal are a very good footballing side but hate physical sides – fact. Birmingham are a physical side – fact. That in itself gives the possibility of an upset here today. Arsenal are missing both Gallas and Vermaelen for this game which gives Arsenal massive defensive issues against a tactically astute and strong Birmingham attack, problems I don’t think that they’re capable of handling. Arsenal have done well in attack themselves of late when you consider that only shitty Bendtner has been up front on his own and to his credit he has scored goals. However, he’s facing one of the best defences in the league and I don’t envision him winning this battle.

Although the form table shows otherwise, I’m calling an upset today. Arsenal should be exposed at the back and Birmingham haven’t been as bad lately as their form suggests. With the above in mind, Arsenal are too short and the value has to be in laying them today.

Verdict: Lay Arsenal at 7/5.

KuPS Kuopio vs Tampere United – home win at 9/5.

KuPS Kuopio are still one of the poorer Finnish sides in the Veikkausliiga but have been unlucky in the Liiga Cup this season, I have to say. They’ve not taken their chances well enough consistently; that’s true. However, when you have three goals ruled out and then lose 1-0 like they did in their game at home against Haka Valkeakoski. However, KuPS changed their luck last match by overcoming JJK Jyvaskyla 2-1, which will have done their confidence a lot of good as well as giving them something to bring into this game today. KuPS can’t quality for the latter stages of this competition but will want to enter their Veikkausliiga campaign on the back of a win so will look to use their newfound form and potency to take three points today.

Tampere United are the better of these two sides but are also a lot more puzzling. Tampere United don’t travel well as a rule anyway but results like their last match astound me. Somehow, a strong home side – Tampere United – were battered 3-0 by a meager AC Oulu at home without there being any red cards. Sometimes you just get one of those results where you scratch your head and say “What the fuck happened here?” – this is one of those times. Tampere are twice the side that AC Oulu are irrespective of their financial difficulties and the problems that are caused as a result of it. AC Oulu will be lucky to stay in the Veikkausliiga this season whereas Tampere United should claim a standard mid-table place. Tampere United are a capable side but their Liiga Cup campaign this season demonstrates just how haphazard they truly are. They’ve won convincingly at Haka Valkeakoski and at home to Jaro Pietarsaari but have also suffered two embarassing defeats at home to JJK Jyvaskyla and AC Oulu respectively without even scoring a goal despite both sides being considerably worse than Tampere. So what have Tampere and indeed ourselves learned from their Liiga Cup campaign? Absolutely nothing. Brilliant!

Tampere United’s humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to AC Oulu last match will have hurt them and it should show today. They need to win to secure a place in the next round of the Liiga Cup so have to attack today. However, their woeful defending will catch up with them if they’re forced to attack a rejuvenated KuPS Kuopio, particularly as Tampere United aren’t scoring enough goals, so I think the odds on the home win are rather good value today – possibly even over-priced, too!

Verdict: KuPS Kuopio to win at 9/5.

Zalaegerszegi TE vs Debreceni VSC – away win at 10/11.

ZTE are a good home side in the Soproni Liga as they’ve demonstrated very well this season with six wins in nine games, losing just twice. ZTE’s strength is scoring goals, something they average doing over twice per home game so they tend to cause a lot of problems for their opponents. However, ZTE’s weakness lies in conceding too many goals at home, something that has hamstrung them somewhat silently already this season. It only takes a competent defensive side to break ZTE apart as they concede so many home goals – nearly two goals conceded per home game – and today’s opponents are one of those capable of causing the afore-mentioned problems for hosts ZTE. ZTE have only played two home games in the Soproni Liga since returning from the winter break and have been somewhat disappointing in both with just a narrow home win against MTK Budapest and a disappointing 3-3 draw at home to Ferencvaros. Ferencvaros are a bigger side than ZTE but to concede three goals at home to a side that only averaged scoring a goal per away game prior to that encounter shows a weak defence. If ZTE defend like that today then they’ll lose this game comfortably, which is something I’m banking on.

Debreceni VSC are beginning to look their old selves again now which is clearly worrying league leaders Fehervar. They’ve played three away games consecutively and have beaten Fehervar in the League Cup and Szombathelyi Haladas in the league without even conceding a goal in those two games. They drew their last away game in the Magyar Kupa against Budapest Honved but that again is a respectable result. Debreceni VSC have already won five out of nine away games in the Soproni Liga and their form of late in all competitions suggests to me that that record will only get better in times to come. Debreceni VSC average scoring two goals per game so ZTE’s weak defence should be exposed today.

This should be a firecracker of a game as it always produces lots of goals. There have been three goals or more in the last five meetings between these two sides at either ground so I wouldn’t be too concerned if Debreceni VSC fall behind today at somepoint! However, Debreceni VSC’s quality should tell by the final whistle with their quality advantage, potency, and defensive stability of late so the away win looks good value to me today.

Verdict: Debreceni VSC to win at 10/11.

Kawasaki Frontale vs Shimizu S-Pulse – home win at 11/10.

I like these odds because I feel the bookies are underrating Kawasaki Frontale. Don’t get me wrong – Kawasaki Frontale haven’t had a good start to their campaign per se but they are beginning to find their feet. Kawasaki Frontale do learn their lessons fast though, to their credit. They were embarassed 3-1 at home by China’s Beijing Guoan in their opening Asian Champions League game but followed that up by annihlating Melbourne Victory 4-0 in their last home game a few days ago. Kawasaki Frontale were humbled 4-0 at giants Yokohama F Marinos in their last J-League game but will hopefully deal out swift and accurate retribution today. Kawasaki Frontale score a lot of goals so they’re generally a good side to back as they tend to outscore opponents despite being lax defensively. Kawasaki Frontale have won against Albirex Niigata already at home in the J-League this season, a side who were notoriously good on the road last season. Now they face an over-achieving Shimizu S-Pulse side that are capable of doing well on the road but do tend to lose a lot on the road too so why the bookies are over-pricing a Kawasaki Frontale side that are strong at home is beyond me.

Shimizu S-Pulse have lost two out of their last three visits to Kawasaki Frontale, claiming a draw in their other meeting. They’ve have a good campaign so far as they’re currently unbeaten but they’ve not really faced a tough game with the exception of an out-of-form Sanfrecce Hiroshima. The two sides that Shimizu S-Pulse have beaten are Vissel Kobe and Montedio Yamagata – two of the poorer J-League sides – so don’t get too carried away by their good start to the campaign!

Although the visitors are capable of springing a surprise from time to time, Kawasaki Frontale are a dominating home side and score a hell of a lot of goals. Shimizu’s success so far in the J-League largely stems from being good at the back, something I don’t envision them being able to maintain against their potent hosts today so I think the superior Kawasaki Frontale should really win this game at what I can only describe as generous odds.

Verdict: Kawasaki Frontale to win at 11/10.

Jaguares vs Monterrey – away win at 6/4.

Hosts Jaguares have had a poor Primera Division campaign with just one win in their eleven games played this season. They average conceding nearly two goals per game but only average scoring just over a goal per game so it’s easy to see why they’re not doing too well! Jaguares were on a decent run of four games without defeat prior to their defeat at Pumas UNAM last match but that result should really have knocked the already fragile confidence of Jaguares further still and I expect to see them somewhat demoralised tonight, which should be enough to allow in-form Monterrey in.

Visitors Monterrey enter this game on the back of a morale-boosting win at home to Guadalajara. They needed that win to end their run of three consecutive draws and to give them something to take into the potentially arduous trip to Jaguares. Monterrey actually have a very poor head-to-head record against Jaguares but they’ve not played as well as they are now for some time, in my opinion, so have a good chance to break the voodoo curse on them! Monterrey have won four out of their last five Primera Division games and have won eight out of eleven Primera Division games this season so they look a very menacing side currently.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Monterrey are the better of these two sides and they’ve got great momentum to back it up so I’m finding it hard to not back them tonight. Jaguares will make this game difficult for Monterrey so I expect quite a close and low-scoring game tonight. However, I feel Jaguares’ defeat at Pumas UNAM last match will have hurt them and broken their momentum so you have to feel that the value is with the in-form Monterrey side tonight.

Verdict: Monterrey to win at 6/4.

Real Mallorca vs Barcelona – lay Barcelona at 8/5.

I don’t like to go against Barcelona given choice but these odds are too good to ignore. Where else would you find odds of 8/5 on laying the away side against a home side that have won twelve out of thirteen home games this season but the Primera Liga? Nowhere!

Real Mallorca aren’t as good as Barcelona; let’s be quite clear on that before we begin. However, there’s a damn good reason that they’re currently fourth in the Primera Liga and it’s because of their unbelievable home form which has seen them win twelve out of thirteen home games this season. They boast the best defensive record in the division at home with an average of just over a goal conceded per every two games and they average scoring nearly three goals per home game. I can’t really explain why there is such a gulf between Mallorca’s home form and away form but what I do know is not to go against them at home!

Visitors Barcelona have been getting the results lately but without playing the beautiful football. In fact, they’ve found the more physical sides harder to deal with and break down and Mallorca are one of those sides. Barcelona lost here last season so will be a tad uneasy about the trip east but confident with their recent run of form. Little Lionel Messi has been scoring goals for fun of late and I tend to find that this makes Barcelona play better football with more confidence. However, it can’t be denied that they’ve not looked nearly as potent this season and have even looked poor a lot more than they should be. They looked to be missing the surging runs of Daniel Alves against Osasuna in their last game and any weakness shown against Mallorca tonight will be exposed so Barcelona will have to be at their best to take something from this game. What has to concern Barcelona is not only that they’ve only won once in their last three away games in the Primera Liga but also the fact that they’ve conceded two goals in each of those games irrespective of the poor level of opponents that they’ve faced en mass. That kind of record will hurt them tonight if they don’t play their football to its maximum and I don’t feel they’re ready to do that tonight.

Barcelona will have half a mind on their game at Arsenal next week but also know that they need to win this game to keep up the pressure on Real Madrid in the Primera Liga so Josep Guardiola has some tough decisions to make. I can see him resting at least a couple of players at somepoint during this game which should work to Mallorca’s advantage. Either way, however, there’s tremendous value in laying Barcelona tonight and there’s a lot of good reasons behind doing so logic says give it a whirl!

Verdict: Lay Barcelona at 8/5.

Levante vs Huesca – home win at 4/5.

Although Levante have struggled lately, these odds are too long for me, happily – I’d expect Levante to be 4/6 to win this game at least. Levante have won nine out of fifteen home games this season and have been beaten just once along the way. They average scoring nearly two goals per home game whilst not even conceding a goal per home game. Levante are one of the more efficient home sides in this division but left their efficiency behind in their last home game by annihlating Gimnastic de Tarragona 6-1. Levante may have lost their last game at Real Sociedad but Levante are a different side away from home. The fact is that Levante have won five out of their last six home games and are the better of these two sides so I expect them to do the business tonight.

Huesca have already lost seven out of fourteen away games in the Segunda Liga this season so they already look set to struggle at Levante tonight. Huesca don’t defend badly but their goal-shy displays ensure that goals conceded tend to be fatal ones. In fact, no Segunda Liga side has scored less goals on the road than Huesca with tonight’s visitors having scored an average of just over a goal for every two away games played, a statistic which largely overshadows their rather competent defensive form. Huesca have only won once in their last four games, losing their last two away games consecutively without even scoring a goal against out-of-form Numancia and in-form Girona. The results might not appear that bad on paper but the fact is that they’re playing a side tonight that are better than those two sides and a side that are better at home than those two sides so they’re going to have real issues tonight.

Although I expect a rather droll game with few goals scored, there’s almost certainly value in the home win for the better of these two sides playing on their own turf.

Verdict: Levante to win at 4/5.
