Today’s secondary featured game is the Romanian Liga game between Petrolul Ploiesti and Otelul Galati. This one is particularly notable for the fact that the moneybags are hosting the side that simply have no money, which actually plays a large part in this tip.
Petrolul were a bit of a “nothing” side last season but were bought out pre-season and now have a lot of funding and a lot of good players in their side too. They still have a large amount of gelling to do but they’ve already demonstrated their attacking capabilities by thrashing Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt 5-0 on the opening day of the season. A trip to experienced Vaslui came too soon for the newbies and Petrolul took a bit of a beating there. The goals that they’re conceding are a bit sloppy and they need to improve in that area especially. However, their attack is strong with experienced players such as Oprita, Marinescu, and especially Cristea in midfield. They’ve got the potential to do very well in a league that has no clear superior side right now and as challenging as it’ll be for them to achieve anything in their first season as a good side, I won’t rule it out.
Otelul Galati infamously won the Liga a couple of years ago. However, they won it via industry and efficiency rather than flair and firepower. I still respect that aspect of their play but their style has worn a little old and they’re not as impassive as they used to be. Otelul can be broken if the right side takes the lead against them. If Otelul score the first goal then they become a tough task but they’re not the side that they once were, to phrase it rather bluntly. Otelul have had their monetary support withdrawn and subsequently players are debating whether to leave or not. It’s not a particularly unified camp right now and if Otelul don’t have 100% unity and determination then they become very vulnerable, which is what I am banking on today.
For my money, Petrolul have to be worth a flutter at evens, even without the influential Cristea.
