Plymouth Argyle vs West Bromwich Albion

Free

Today’s featured game is the Championship encounter between Plymouth Argyle and West Bromwich Albion in the west country. Hosts Plymouth have had a rough season and it’s not getting any easier for them as they’re now second from bottom of the table. Visitors West Brom are flying high and currently occupy second place in the table so their season is going to plan.

Plymouth Argyle have lost two out of their last three games but have won three out of their last five Championship games. Confused? Plymouth fans sure are! However, what remains a cold, hard fact is that Plymouth have lost seven out of thirteen home games in the Championship this season, which is more than any other side in this division. They’re not big conceders at home but the fact that only fellow relegation-battlers Reading and defensively-minded Swansea City have scored less goals at home than they have indicates just why they’re doing so badly. Plymouth are capable of doing damage to sides at home that they know they can at least match. However, I’d be surprised if any Plymouth fan could genuinely say that they’re a match for West Brom anywhere on the field because they’re simply not, unfortunately!

West Bromwich Albion have scored more goals than any other Championship side has this season – fact. They don’t pay a great deal of attention to defending. In fact, I’m not sure that they know what defending is if I’m honest with you! However, their attacking potency is second to none and this was illustrated perfectly in their 3-2 win mid-week at Blackpool. They didn’t outplay Blackpool, per se – they simply outscored them, which is generally the best way to win a game of football! Don’t get me wrong here – West Brom can be undone against sides that know how to defend but Plymouth are not one of those sides. West Brom average scoring over two goals per away game and have won seven out of fourteen away games this season, losing just once. West Brom are unbeaten in four and have won their last two games consecutively so momentum is good, confidence is good, and potency is as high as ever.

Ultimately, we’ve got a mismatch of sides here. West Brom are a class above Plymouth and I expect their lethal finishing to dismiss the west country outfit with relative ease today.

Verdict: West Bromwich Albion to win at 4/5.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Westerlo vs Germinal Beerschot – home win at 11/8.

Hosts Westerlo delighted me mid-week by winning at Sint-Truiden as I predicted. That win will have given them some momentum ahead of their game with Germinal Beerschot today, which they’ll need. Atypically, I’d consider this to be quite the encounter between two decent sides but Germinal are atrocious at the moment so the ball has to be in Westerlo’s court. Westerlo have been a decent force at home this season as they’ve only been beaten three times in eleven games. This is the kind of record I’d normally expect from them although usually with more than four wins along the way! Nonetheless, Westerlo are something of a sleeping dragon in my eyes – they’re a good side and their win at Sint-Truiden last match may have just awoken what is potentially a good side in the Eerste Klasse.

Visitors Germinal Beerschot should normally provide a lot more resistance in this game than I expect them to but frankly six defeats in twelve Eerste Klasse away games coupled with five consecutive defeats is enough to demoralise any side. Germinal have only scored once in their last five games but have conceded a hefty fifteen goals, which is an average of three goals conceded per game. Germinal aren’t playing well enough to beat anyone at the moment and I’m even including lowly Roeselare in that statement! Don’t get me wrong – some of their games have been tough but Germinal have showed a lack of fight, a lack of interest, and an extreme lack of goalscoring. Ultimately, they should be pure cannon fodder for a partially rejuvenated Westerlo side here today.

Verdict: Westerlo to win at 11/8.

Liverpool vs Everton – home win at 3/4.

I’m going to start getting a reputation for stupid bets like this, aren’t I?!

No, I don’t believe Liverpool are better than Everton at the moment. No, I don’t think Liverpool are playing good football. And no, I don’t believe Liverpool have their best players available to them. Nonetheless…

Yes, I’m backing a Liverpool win. I’m as worried and confused as you are but not as worried or confused as you’ll be when you see my reasoning! I’m backing them to win because Liverpool have slipped from being a big side nowadays. I’m not talking about their prestigious past of trophies and heroes but I’m talking of actual quality and consistency, two things they lack, frankly. Liverpool have now become one of those sides that don’t care much about how they do so long as their rivals suffer. We all like our rivals to suffer but even so – to make it the focal point of your season is ridiclous. For those reasons, however, Liverpool have now got four cup finals per season – two against Manchester United and two against Everton. So long as Liverpool win those games then they’re happy so now all their effort goes into those games. Seriously! Look at the statistics – Liverpool have beaten United in all three of their last three meetings at either ground and have beaten Everton in three out of their last four Premier League meetings. Are you seeing the pattern?

I’m willing to accept it’s a very loose basis for this bet but I just genuinely believe it will happen. I’d love Liverpool to fail against their most bitter local rivals but they always seem to win it by foul means or by fair. To cast at least some level of rational thought onto this fixture – Liverpool have been convincing at home of late with back-to-back wins and clean sheets against Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton Wanderers so at least the hosts have some momentum ahead of this derby. I rate Everton and Manager David Moyes very highly indeed and I feel for them as they’re still in Liverpool’s shadow despite playing better football. However…I just feel Liverpool will win this game as they always do because it’s all they have left to play for.

Verdict: Liverpool to win at 3/4.

Ipswich Town vs Middlesbrough – home win at 7/5.

Hosts Ipswich Town have finally started to show what they’re made of under experienced and strict Manager Roy Keane. It’s taken them long enough but I feel it’s worth the wait as Keane is a cracking Manager, given time. Ipswich are now staggering away from the Championship relegation zone and just one defeat in their past five Championship games shows that they’re starting to become a force again. They’ve won two of those games and both were home games with Ipswich scoring three goals each time. Their last home game was a respectable 1-1 draw at home to a potent West Bromwich Albion side and it took a heartbreaking late goal for the Baggies to steal a point from Keane’s side but it does at least show that Ipswich are heading the right way. Their belief and momentum is strong and they’re starting to find the net again, making them very dangerous opponents and also a side that I feel the bookies are under-pricing at the moment.

Visitors Middlesbrough are a very capable side but are also extremely capable of not showing up. They’re unbeaten in three games and even kept a clean sheet in their last match at home to Bristol City but they’re simply not playing good football. They won convincingly at Doncaster Rovers, a result I respect a lot because Doncaster are a tenacious side, but then again this is the kind of game that Middlesbrough really should be winning convincingly. Middlesbrough ultimately aren’t scoring enough goals and although Strachan has done a lot of good for their defence (who haven’t conceded more than a goal in a game for four consecutive Championship games now) he’s not improved their attack. The signing of Scott McDonald from Celtic in the January transfer window could prove to be an inspired move but ultimately the loss of winger and general creator Adam Johnson in the transfer window will have hurt them a lot more than McDonald is capable of aiding.

If this game was a month or two down the line then I’d possibly consider a draw as I believe it’s only a matter of time until Strachan sorts Middlesbrough out. However, they’re not ready for this game currently and they’ve lost their best player so I think the momentum, confidence, and potency of Ipswich will be too much for the North-East side today and we’ll hopefully see a home win!

Verdict: Ipswich Town to win at 7/5.

Leyton Orient vs Brighton & Hove Albion – home win at 6/5.

Leyton Orient are on a terrifyingly good run of late and I’ve no real way of explaining why! They’re not a great side by any stretch of the imagination but they’re playing good football with confidence so what else do you need? They’ve won three out of their last four games and drew the other game. Three of those results were unexpected and highly respectable with wins away to local rivals Charlton Athletic and a demolition at home to Bristol Rovers whilst claiming a respectable 2-2 draw at tricky Carlisle United. Still, it’s not my job to explain why Leyton Orient are playing well; it’s simply my job to take advantage of when they are playing well. Leyton Orient have a presentable home record of six wins, three  draws, and five defeats in fourteen home games so they at least have capability to do well at home. They average scoring nearly two goals per home game and are playing well enough to increase that average at the moment. I expect Orient’s momentum to do them proud here today and make it four wins in five games.

Visitors Brighton are another tricky side though! They’re far better away from home than they are at home so they won’t be lying down for this game. They’ve only lost four out of fourteen away games, winning five times in the process. They’ve been beaten just once in their past five games and have played some impressive games lately away to Walsall and Aston Villa, most notably. However, they’ve fallen a tad flat of late with a disappointing draw at rock-bottom Stockport County and a defeat at home to a good Millwall side but a Millwall side that had previously only won twice on the road all season. Brighton’s record away from home stems from their ability to score goals, something they’ve done more times than any other side in League One barring league leaders Norwich City. However, Brighton also have one of the biggest numbers of goals conceded on the road so let’s just say that they have some interesting away games!

Had Brighton not had two consecutive disappointing results prior to this game then I’d be less happy about backing the home win. However, Brighton are struggling at the moment but Leyton Orient are doing anything but struggle so I think the value on them to continue with their excellent form is pretty damn good!

Verdict: Leyton Orient to win at 6/5.

Swindon Town vs Charlton Athletic – home win at 8/5.

Hosts Swindon Town continue to impress me as they battle onwards through League One. They’re currently fifth in the table and have won five out of their last seven League One games, drawing twice but remaining very efficient and convincing throughout. Their run has seen them overcome Leeds United convincingly and claim an impressive draw at Charlton Athletic so they’ve gained a lot of momentum in recent times as a result. Swindon have already won eight out of thirteen home games this season, tasting defeat just once along the way. They average scoring nearly two goals per game and only a handful of League One sides have conceded less home goals than they have this season. Bluntly – Swindon are well-placed to cause Charlton Athletic problems today.

Visitors Charlton haven’t looked themselves for some time now. In my opinion, they’ve not been convincing for at least ten League One games now. We’ve seen them scrape victories against poor sides like Wycombe Wanderers and Hartlepool United but similarly we’ve seen them struggle and falter against the likes of Walsall, Leyton Orient, Tranmere Rovers etc. The thing is that sides are finding it too easy to defend against Charlton at the moment. Charlton haven’t been convincing defensively for ages – they’re a bit like a League One version of the Championship’s West Brom in that aspect – but their goalscoring is now faltering too. They’ve scored six goals in their last five games and considering that three of those games were at home and all of those games were games that they were capable of winning, it’s not really good enough. Charlton’s confidence is now beginning to be affected so they’re losing momentum, something proven by their tally of zero wins in their past three games. Ultimately, Charlton are not playing well and they’ve got a very difficult away game today so could struggle here.

Charlton may have only lost twice on the road all season long but they’ve seldom looked more likely to do so than they do today. Swindon are workers, they’re efficient, and they’re playing well – they’re everything that Charlton aren’t at the moment so I feel Swindon can “do a job” on Charlton today.

Verdict: Swindon Town to win at 8/5.

Rochdale vs Crewe Alexandra – lay Rochdale at 11/10.

This is a bold call but it’s got potential! Rochdale have parted with a couple of their wingers in the January transfer window and it’s really affected their play hence their disappointing performances of late. They look less able to score goals, something backed up by a total of zero goals scored in their past two games, and have proven to be easily defended against as a result. Port Vale know how to defend but they came up to Rochdale and got a point, which they shouldn’t really have been able to do. Rochdale are rapidly losing momentum as a result of their lost players and don’t look a substantial enough threat at the present time for me to consider them likely to win this game.

Crewe Alexandra aren’t a great side but they’re a competent side on their day. They’ve only been beaten twice in their last five League Two games and have taken something from five out of their last seven away games in this division, which is a worrying statistic for Rochdale. Crewe have actually won more away games than home games this season and have won more away games than most sides in this division so they’re at least showing on some levels that they are competent as I mentioned earlier. Only today’s opponents Rochdale have scored more away goals than Crewe have this season with Crewe average scoring nearly two goals per away game. Although I don’t expect Crewe to come here for the win today, I do expect them to turn up, score goals, and make life difficult for Rochdale, which they’re more than capable of doing. Who knows – they may even win the game! However, I’ll be surprised to see them lose the game given the form of both sides at the moment.

Verdict: Lay Rochdale at 11/10.

Jaro Pietarsaari vs Haka Valkeakoski – home win at 9/5.

This is a fairly loose call but one I think will come off. Both of these two sides have weakened significantly over the winter break and Jaro especially have issues with injuries at the moment. However, Jaro have at least proven that despite defensive casualties at the moment, they can still score goals. They played newly-promoted AC Oulu away in their opening Liiga Cup game and scored twice although eventually succumbed to a 3-2 defeat. The fact that they scored encouraged me because they’re a capable side on their day and are capable of outscoring sides, something that they’re going to have to be good at for as long as they have defensive issues!

Visitors Haka over-achieved last year and I think we’re going to see that a lot this year. They’ve already lost at home in the Liiga Cup to a JJK Jyvaskyla side that were very nearly relegated to the Ykkonen last season and that was without even scoring a goal. I predicted that JJK wouldn’t lose that game due to the issues that Haka had over the winter break but I didn’t envision Haka even failing to draw the game! Haka are already struggling to score goals and that’s always a dangerous problem to have.

Even though it’s still early on in the Liiga Cup, we’re started to see what the winter break has done to some sides. Haka look devoid of innovation and look goal-shy as a result whereas Jaro look potent as well as suicidal. Ultimately, Haka should have their chances against Jaro today but Jaro are at least taking their chances so are certainly worth a bet. Frankly, I feel the bookies are overrating Haka far too much so there’s value in the home win potentially!

Verdict: Jaro Pietarsaari to win at 9/5.

Boulogne vs Montpellier HSC – away win at 11/10.

A heroic draw at home to Girondins de Bordeaux last match, Boulogne now enter this game having taken just one defeat in their past five games. They’re not playing good football – far from it! However, they’ve learned to master the art of defence and have drawn four games out of their last five in Ligue 1, with their three most recent draws all being 0-0, unsurprisingly. Basically, if you score against Boulogne then you’re going to beat them. Boulogne have scored just ten goals in ten home games this season whereas they average conceding just under two goals per home game. Logic dictates that they’re going to lose most of their home games with this record and indeed Boulogne have lost six out of ten home games already, unsurprisingly. Whether this late spell of determination and cleen sheets galore has come too late to keep Boulogne in the division or not remains to be seen. However, the fact that they’ve not scored in four consecutive Ligue 1 games means that some things don’t change i.e. a goal scored against Boulogne will generally be the winning goal!

Visitors Montpellier HSC have impressed me greatly this season following promotion from Ligue 2 and although I don’t believe that they’ll sustain it until the end of the season, they’re certainly sustaining it well at the moment. They won their most recent Ligue 1 game 2-0 at home to giants Olympique de Marseille, which was an impressive feat. They’ve won four out of their last five Ligue 1 games, including an even more impressive win at Stade Gerland, beating Olympique Lyonnais 2-1. Montpellier sure as hell know what they’re doing and they’re doing it well too! Their momentum is incredibly strong at the moment and they’ve already won five out of eleven games in Ligue 1 this year, which gives them even more impetus to overcome lowly Boulogne tonight.

Although I don’t genuinely believe there’s much quality gap between the two sides, momentum massively favours Montpellier and I can’t see the visitors not netting here so the away win should be fairly straightforward tonight.

Verdict: Montpellier HSC to win at 11/10.

Sochaux vs AS Nancy-Lorraine – home win at 11/10.

Sochaux were an excellent home side last season in Ligue 1 and only of late have they re-awakened that side of them. They’ve now won seven out of eleven Ligue 1 home games this season with their most recent being a very impressive win to dismantle a momentum-driven power run by LOSC Lille. Sochaux aren’t big goalscorers but there’s just something about their home games that they take great pride in which allows them to do better than you’d consider possible at home! Sochaux have now won four out of their last five home games and it’s refreshing to see them back to their best and causing problems for other sides at home. Few sides have an easy ride here and even fewer manage to score here, which is largely why Sochaux enjoy their home wins so much! Overall, Sochaux have got plenty in their favour ahead of this game and should be able to take three points tonight.

Visitors AS Nancy-Lorraine are a puzzling side. They’re very capable but they rarely like showing it. They’ve won two out of their last five Ligue 1 games, which isn’t a particularly good record until you consider that their wins came away to in-form Montpellier HSC and at home to a Lorient side that were playing well too, each without conceding a goal. However, Nancy then ruin their ability by scoring an abnormally few amount of goals, at least in recent times. Nancy are actually better on the road than they are at home, which proves my point about Nancy being a puzzling side. They’re just one of those sides that you have to hope don’t turn up or you could have real issues although that side rarely turns up in general!

Nancy have lost here twice in their last three visits, drawing the other time, so they don’t enjoy their visits here despite being a generally decent away side. Sochaux have the rub of the green over most sides at home and I can’t see that changing today with momentum favouring the hosts.

Verdict: Sochaux to win at 11/10.

Racing Club Lens vs Le Mans – home win at 3/4.

There’s not much I can write about this game without feeling depressed at how badly these two sides are playing of late. Neither has won in their last three Ligue 1 games and only visitors Le Mans have even scored in that time! Both sides are capable of being much better than they are but each have their own issues. What I’m hoping to take advantage of today is the fact that Racing Club Lens are a reliable home side in general with five wins in eleven home games in Ligue 1 this season, losing just three times, and averaging scoring at least once per game. Visitors Le Mans are the worst away side in Ligue 1 with ten defeats from ten away games. They concede two goals per away game on average and score just over a goal per every three away games that they play.

Summarised – this game is going to be one of the most boring in the history of man but that away record is one that you cannot overlook for a side like Racing Club Lens’ potential and actual ability. The hosts know how to win at home and if they can’t do it today against the worst away side in the division then they (and I!) should just retire!

Verdict: Racing Club Lens to win at 3/4.

OGC Nice vs LOSC Lille – away win at 5/6.

OGC Nice are another capable side that aren’t producing the goods. The fact that they’ve won and lost four home games in Ligue 1 this season shows that they have ability but rarely appear to harness it. Nice’s biggest problem is scoring goals, something they don’t do anywhere near enough which is largely why they’re lingering just above the drop zone currently. Well, that and some atrocious away form anyway! I’d normally be more hesitant about backing the away win against Nice but frankly their recent form is shocking with no wins in nine Ligue 1 games and seven defeats along the way. Nice have played some tough sides but they’ve also played some easy sides and haven’t won any so Nice are looking low on confidence and their momentum doesn’t even exist currently.

Visitors LOSC Lille had the stuffing knocked out of them when they lost to plucky Sochaux in Ligue 1 of late but regained some of their composure by overcoming Racing Club Lens in a 1-0 home win. You sense that it’s going to take something big to dislodge this confident bunch of players, especially young Eden Hazard in midfield. Lille are looking more stubborn, resilient, and efficient than ever before and still have some good momentum from their magnificent run prior to their defeat at Sochaux so they’ve got the capability to do damage. An early goal today should settle them with a bit of luck and the downward spiral of Nice’s form will help them to no end. I’m not expecting a lot of goals in this one but the visitors should win comfortably nonetheless.

Verdict: LOSC Lille to win at 5/6.

FC Nurnberg vs VFB Stuttgart  – away win at evens.

Nurnberg have already lost five out of nine home games in the Bundesliga this season and have claimed just two wins along the way. This record largely shows why Nurnberg are second from bottom in the table and most likely won’t be in the division come next season. They average scoring less than a goal per home game and concede around 1.5 goals per home game, which is actually quite good considering their league placing but irrelevant as they’re not scoring enough goals to make use of it. They’re on a mini-run of late with no defeats in two games, even winning their last encounter away to Hannover 96, which was a real feather in their cap. However, they’re taking on an actual side with ability today and I think they might get caught out, especially as they don’t score enough goals.

VFB Stuttgart have torn up the statistics guide to the Bundesliga and are completely re-writing the script! I can’t use their away form as a basis for backing them because it’s not good enough to warrant it but their intense level of momentum is enough for me to consider backing them against anyone at the moment! I figured that their run would end against a competent opponent after it started against an out-of-sorts Hoffenheim at the end of December but since then they’ve beaten VFL Wolfsburg, won away to Freiburg whilst keeping a clean sheet, and have battered BV09 Borussia Dortmund 4-1, who were the other form side in the Bundesliga entering this game and had one of the best defences in the league! Who can possibly oppose Stuttgart after a run of this calibre? Not me! We all know what Stuttgart are capable of and odds of this kind on a Stuttgart win whilst Stuttgart are playing as well as they can are frankly a gift as they’re twice the side that Nurnberg are!

Verdict: VFB Stuttgart to win at evens.

Villarreal II vs Cordoba – home win at evens.

Hosts Villarreal II have done a lot better following promotion from the Segunda B than I ever expected them to. They’ve actually got some really good players in their side, players which have been catching the eye of a lot of clubs around Europe if the rumours are true. Villarreal II have only lost one home game in the Segunda Liga all season whilst winning five times and drawing four times. They don’t concede many goals which helps them hide the fact that they don’t score too many either. They’ve won three out of their last four Segunda Liga games and have strong momentum as a result of those wins. I don’t rate Villarreal II as a particularly good side but they’re a united side and they’re playing well so I feel that “riding the wave” is the best way to approach this game.

Atypically, I wouldn’t normally bother backing Villarreal II at home because I just don’t think they’re that good. However, when I saw tha they were playing Cordoba I simply had to have some of that pie! Cordoba are an awful away side. They’ve won just once on the road all season in ten attempts, which isn’t good enough. They’ve only lost three but the fact that they’ve drawn six tells you exactly how they set their side up on the road – to keep a clean sheet. They’ve only scored six away goals all season, which is the joint-lowest goalscoring record on the road in the whole of the Segunda Liga. The fact that Cordoba have only conceded twelve goals tells you that their defence is stubborn but Villarreal II have some creative players that can unlock this type of defence easily and I expect them to do so tonight.

Cordoba can be a force, don’t get me wrong, especially at home. However, despite their astute defending on the road, Cordoba have been poor overall lately having only scored in one of their last five games. Sides never have it easy with Cordoba but you get the impression that an in-form Villarreal II will score at least once against them and that should be enough to take the points tonight.

Verdict: Villarreal II to win at evens.

Recommended bets in no particular order:

Aris Salonika, PSV Eindhoven, SL Benfica, VFB Stuttgart, and Sochaux at 8/1.
