Sampdoria vs Udinese

Free

Today’s featured game is the Serie A encounter between Sampdoria and Udinese. Sampdoria have continued their run of good form from last season into this season (display-wise at least!) whereas Udinese look even more relegation-bound than they did last year with a string of highly unconvincing displays.

Sampdoria perhaps haven’t won as many games as they’ve merited so far this season but they have every opportunity to change that today. Only a capitulation at home to SSC Napoli in their last home game saw them lose 2-1 instead of win 1-0. Aside from that, Sampdoria have claimed a respectable 3-3 draw at Juventus and have beaten a good Lazio side 2-0 at home so they’re still playing rather well. They’ve performed well in Europe too, claiming a 1-1 draw in Netherlands against PSV Eindhoven so I’ve been impressed with Sampdoria on various fronts this year. They do have a European game in a few days times but given that it’s at home to a Debreceni VSC side that were crushed yesterday by lowly Siofok and that it’s in Italy, the hosts aren’t going to be massively concerned about that game and I doubt they’ll rest players as a result. Di Canio’s strike duo of Cassano and Pazzini are spreading fear through Italian defences this season and deservedly so with both posing a constant threat. Sampdoria have beaten Udinese for two out of their last three home games against today’s opponents and have scored a minimum of two goals in each of their last four home games against Udinese, which is not only a strong record but is also a record that is unlikely to change today as Udinese simply cannot defend.

Udinese are rock-bottom of Serie A with four defeats from four games because they average conceding over two goals per game currently. Not scoring goals doesn’t help either but they’ve played some poor football this season and are showing no sign of improvement. They lose Pepe, D’Agostino, and Candreva over the summer so their midfield is barely recognisable from last year and their overall displays are suffering as result. There’s far too much dependance on experienced striker Di Natale and emerging Chilean talent Alexis Sanchez for my liking and Udinese’s attack is suffering as a result. They’re demoralised and struggling in every area of the park so I’m not sure why the bookies have priced the home win as they have here!

Initially, I thought 17/20 was a bit short considering that Sampdoria have struggled to see sides off of late. However, given how bad Udinese are actually playing and how easily they’re conceding, I have to favour the home win here for a frankly superior side at 17/20.

Verdict: Sampdoria to win at 17/20.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Arsenal de Sarandi vs Newells Old Boys – home win at 21/20.

Arsenal are priced a bit too generously today for me to overlook. Newells are a hard side to beat, admittedly, but that’s largely because their defence is hard to breach, not because they’re a particularly threatening side. They’re unbeaten in three away games this season but I’d argue that they’ve not faced anyone that is either good enough and/or in a position to beat them yet. They competed with Estudiantes De La Plata just three days ago in the Copa Sudamericana so they should be a little jaded here and they’re facing an Arsenal side that always score goals. Arsenal have struggled a little of late themselves but an unlucky display against both River Plate and Velez Sarsfield respectively looks a lot harsher on the form chart than their displays actually merited. Leguizamon and Obolo are still a handful in attack and with a history between these two sides of there being plenty of goals in this exact fixture, it’s hard to see the same not occurring tonight.

The call is risky because Newells can be a tough nut to crack but they should be jaded from their mid-week exploits against Estudiantes and they’re facing a potent Arsenal de Sarandi side with no pressure on them so I fancy the hosts to edge this one by a narrow scoreline at decent odds.

Verdict: Arsenal de Sarandi to win at 21/20.

River Plate vs Quilmes – home win with -1.5 handicap at 33/20.

I’ve already pulled off an Argentinian handicap this weekend; can I shatter the space time continuum by doing so again?!

This is another case of a very good side hosting a very poor side, which is basically the foundation for the bet. Don’t get me wrong – River Plate still have a long way to go before they become the side that they were. However, let’s not forget that they have a higher motivation level than most other sides in the division currently as the bizarre Primera Division setup actually means that over the past three seasons (on average) they’re just outside the relegation zone so they really do have to keep winning their games. They’ve been immaculate at home this season with three wins from three home games and although I’m a little concerned that goalscoring is not the forté of the giants of Argentinian football nowadays although natural goalscorer Pavone is finally being eased into the side, which should aid the solution of that particular problem well. Nonetheless, River have enough creativity in midfield with Ortega and Buonanotte to create chances here and they should be able to thus beat the handicap. Quilmes are new to the division and are playing like it too with enthusiastic but ultimately pointless displays. Only Quilmes and Gimnasia De La Plata have failed to score an away goal in the Primera Division this season with Quilmes losing two out of their three away games, conceding five times along the way. Quilmes aren’t going to pose a great attacking threat here so I do expect the lion’s share of shots to be taken by River. Quilmes aren’t clinical enough to make it count but River are and should very easily be able to do so. River have had luck on their side of late so let’s hope it stays with them tonight for them to beat the somewhat generously priced handicap

Verdict: River Plate to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at 33/20.

Torpedo Zhodino vs Naftan Novopolotsk – away win with draw no bet at 10/11.

I won’t often back Naftan Novopolotsk on the road but they’re facing an awful Torpedo Zhodino side so I have to give it a shot. Naftan are making a late dash for the Vysshaya Liga’s European places but they’ll be disappointed barring a miracle. Nonetheless, they bring good momentum into the game with just one defeat in seven games and that was against reigning champions BATE Borisov thanks to a last-minute winner. They’ve held a good Shakhtyor Soligorsk side to a 0-0 draw on the road along the way and have won their only away game of the season so far at today’s opponents Torpedo Zhodino back in August, winning 4-1. Naftan’s league placing is misleading; they’re easily one of the top five sides in Belarus and their form of late is starting to show that. They’re scoring goals for fun and showing great composure along the way so my faith is happily being restored in my beloved Naftan Novopolotsk to a point where I’m content backing them again. A 4-2 win mid-week in the Belarusian Cup brings them three wins in their last four games and against an inferior Zhodino side today, I have to fancy them to take three points. My main problem with this bet (aside from Naftan not being great travellers!) is that Zhodino have gathered some momentum themselves of late in a bid to beat the drop. They surprisingly won at Vitebsk last match and have even beaten Dinamo Minsk here in their last four games, albeit a very under-strength Dinamo Minsk side. They played well against Shakhtyor Soligorsk and lost 1-0 so Zhodino aren’t at the same poor level as they were earlier this season. Their side appears to have galvanised itself into its usual “pain-in-the-backside” manner again and that’s why I’m adding draw no bet for the away win here. I have no doubt whatsoever that Naftan are good enough to win this game but Zhodino can be bizarrely hard to beat sometimes so there’s a possibility of a draw here.

Ultimately, I expect Naftan to win this game comfortably just as they did in August. However, times have changed since then and Torpedo Zhodino have become a lot more desperate for points and we may finally be seeing that desperation taking form. Therefore, although my call remains the away win for the superior of the two sides, I’ve added a “safety” draw no bet to it.

Verdict: Naftan Novopolotsk to win with draw no bet at 10/11.

BATE Borisov vs FC Minsk – lay BATE Borisov at 21/20.

Approach this one with caution because BATE Borisov really have to win this game if you consider that FC Minsk are their direct title threat at the moment and a win here puts an eight point gap between the two sides. BATE don’t necessarily need the gap in general terms but they do if you consider how much they prioritise their European committments. They do have a big squad available to them, yes, but this is the kind of game that can catch them out. They surprisingly lost to rivals Dinamo Minsk 3-1 at home last match, which will have hurt them considerably as Dinamo were a bit low mentally. BATE are still the best side in Belarus; no questions asked. However, they’ve drawn at a very poor and youthful Partizan Minsk, not to mention their loss at home to Dinamo Minsk, so things are far from good at the moment. They’re hosting AZ Alkmaar in a few days time in the UEFA Europa League and they may cast an eye towards that game and rest the likes of Rodionov so BATE have more than one problem ahead of this game. They also have the knowledge that FC Minsk were the first side to win at BATE this season when BATE were in full flow, which shows the advancing of FC Minsk this year as a unit so BATE could and should be afraid here. BATE love to control games and win them without conceding but FC Minsk bring a flambuoyant approach that BATE are alien to, which is why FC Minsk score so many goals. I’m a little concerned that FC Minsk played 120 minutes mid-week but eight wins in thirteen away games in the Vysshaya Liga this season says that FC Minsk are good enough to stop BATE winning this game today. They average scoring nearly two goals per away game and would love to prevent a home win here and with the hosts not playing well, I think the odds are decidedly generous on laying BATE today.

Verdict: Lay BATE Borisov at 21/20.

Belshina vs Shakhtyor Soligorsk – away win at evens.

After a dismal run of form, Shakhtyor Soligorsk have finally decided that they do want to be in the Vysshaya Liga title race after all and have thus won two consecutive games to boost their chances. Their most recent Vysshaya Liga was a surprisingly emphatic 3-0 win against giants Dinamo Minsk so confidence is high in the Soligorsk camp currently. Their extra-time victory over little Volna mid-week in the Belarusian Cup does concern me a little but they’re still a good side with a large enough squad to cope with it. It also helps my cause that they’re facing a “spent” Belshina side. Belshina started this season very brightly indeed – too brightly, in fact – and they’re suffering now as a result. They’ve drawn back-to-back Vysshaya Liga home games, one of which was surprisingly against relegation-threatened Torpedo Zhodino but it does re-affirm my point regarding their burnout. Belshina also went to extra-time mid-week in the Belarusian Cup but unlike Shakhtyor Soligorsk, they don’t have the squad to deal with that kind of fatigue. Couple that with the fact that they’re already struggling to maintain their form and we have a Belshina side that could very easily capitulate very soon indeed.

Shakhtyor are yet to beat Belshina in two attempts this season; third time lucky perhaps? The odds are good because Belshina are a well-organised unit but tiredness makes a unit less organised which is why Belshina are slipping up a lot so I expect a superior Shakhtyor Soligorsk side to edge this one today at decent odds.

Verdict: Shakhtyor Soligorsk to win at evens.

Avai vs Ceara – home win at 17/20.

I can’t go into much depth with this one because I’m basing it entirely on a quality mismatch. You can look at Avai’s form of late and question three defeats in four games or you can look at who they played and where they played them and realise that they’ve had some hard games. Avai haven’t been themselves, it’s true, but the fact is that they shouldn’t be at 17/20 to beat anyone in Serie A on their own turf – they’re bloody good at home! They always have been, ever since promotion! If Avai were in-form they’d be 1/2 to win this game and rightfully so because the other side of this tip is that Ceara are a woeful side at best. Their new manager is making them attack which exposes their defence, which is their only strong point. I can understand his perspetive but that doesn’t make it a good idea! Ceara aren’t a goalscoring side but they’ve rapidly become one that concedes easily. They’ve won just once in nine Serie A games and they’ve lost five of those games, which is practically two thirds of the games they’ve lost all season long, which should tell you all a great deal about their current place. Fuck the statistics – Ceara are a poor, poor side that Avai really should beat tonight. Avai’s lack of form of late does concern me but I won’t pass up on 17/20 for an Avai home win – they could and certainly should win this by a couple of goals if they turn up and I think it’s worth the risk to take them to win this game.

Verdict: Avai to win at 17/20.

Union Berlin vs MSV Duisburg – away win at 5/4.

It can be dangerous to wade into the Bundesliga 2 too early in the season but I feel there’s some value here. Union Berlin were the surprise package in this division but they’ve lost their spark over the summer and now look little more than cannon fodder. They’ve disappointed in all of their games barring their derby with Hertha HSC Berlin by conceding far too many goals and that doesn’t bode well for the trip of a good Duisburg side that are always capable of scoring goals. Duisburg are one of the favourites to be promoted this year and it’s their ability to score goals that plays a large part in that. Duisburg have won three out of four so far this season and did the double over Union Berlin last season so they know they can win here. Union Berlin aren’t the side that they were and their abject defending is truly terrifying at times. Duisburg’s attacking is incisive enough to make it count today and 5/4 on the away win intrigues me as a result.

Verdict: MSV Duisburg to win at 5/4.

Otelul Galati vs Steaua Bucharest – home win with draw no bet at 13/10.

Otelul Galati have made a great start to their Liga campaign and will look to prove that yet again today against Romania’s biggest club – Steaua Bucharest. Steaua have a mixed record in Galati depending on how well they’re playing at the time because the trip to face Otelul is always one of the harder ones to make in this division. Persistent closing down and an unrelenting tenacity makes Otelul a very strong home side indeed and four wins from four home games this season shows that very well indeed. They average scoring two goals per home game currently and have only conceded one goal in four home games so you can see my point about Otelul’s strength at home. They’re top of the table currently, which isn’t a realistic finishing place for them, but I’m happy to ride the wave with them whilst they’re winning game and they’re certainly doing that currently. A mid-week defeat at Astra Ploiesti in the Romanian Cup will have undoubtedly disappointed them but if you can’t motivate your team for a match against giants Steaua Bucharest then you definitely have problems. It assists matters greatly that new manager Dumitrescu has now followed in the footsteps of predecessor Piturca by leaving the club after arriving at Steaua literally weeks ago. Therefore, caretaker manager Iordanescu should be in charge for this game. In case you didn’t know it already – Steaua are a very fucked up club with Gigi Becali wheeling and dealing as he sees fit, hence a lack of consistency from the giants. Steaua are not in a good shape for this game at all with yet another manager having departed and also with the knowledge that they host SSC Napoli in a few days time in the UEFA Europa League so I think we may see Steaua fall foul to Otelul’s rampant home style. Otelul may not be able to shatter the resilient Steaua defence but I don’t think they’ll lose the game so taking the home win with draw no bet appeals to me today.

Verdict: Otelul Galati to win with draw no bet at 13/10.

Dinamo Moscow vs Spartak Nalchik – home win at 17/20.

I hate betting on Dinamo Moscow because of their unpredictable manner but I have to give them their dues today. Only Zenit St.Petersburg has won at Dinamo Moscow this season and that was back in March so the strength of Dinamo is there for all to see. What they’ve lacked along the way, however, has been goals. Voronin is a worker, not a goalscorer, so the onus has been on “German” striker Kevin Kuranyi who is dutifully scoring the necessary goals with five in his six appearances this season. As a result, Dinamo have turned their multitude of draws into wins and they’ve now won four out of their last five home games in all competitions, including a 3-0 win against rivals Lokomotiv Moscow, so Dinamo do bring momentum into this game. They’ve notched up nine goals in their last three games so you can see what Kuranyi has brought to this Dinamo side.

Visitors Spartak Nalchik have finally had their bubble burst as they enter this game following four consecutive matches without a win. Worryingly, they’ve lost their last two games consecutively in comfortable fashion without scoring any goals so you have to worry for them at the moment. They’ve done enough to stave off the expected relegation battle but they’re in for a rough ride in the second-half of this season if they’re not careful. I can just about accept the fairly unusual defeat at rejuvenated Krylya Sovetov Samara but to lose their atypical home advantage against a sporadic Spartak Moscow side last match isn’t good enough. Nalchik heads are dropping and their lack of experience is finally beginning to show. They don’t travel well as it is with just two wins in eleven away games this season, losing five along the way. They’re not a bad side defensively – that’s how they got to where they are in the table – but their lack of a natural goalscorer hinders them a lot, which is ironic as that was Dinamo Moscow’s problem! The worrying statistic for Spartak Nalchik is that only three sides in the division have scored less on the road than they have and they’re all in the bottom four so Nalchik have problems on the road. They’re going to struggle against in-form Dinamo Moscow today as it is but if they have to match them goal-for-goal then they’re going to lose so I expect them to lose here today, to be blunt.

As long as Dinamo’s attack turns up as it has done of late then I have doubts over them winning this game. They create plenty of chances and finally have someone to finish them off so a demoralised Spartak Nalchik should eventually succumb to their wishes barring a miraculous display. Nalchik don’t score enough goals to concern me in this game so my call is the home win at decent odds.

Verdict: Dinamo Moscow to win at 17/20.
