Corinthians vs Ceara

Free

Today’s featured game is the Brazilian Serie A encounter between heavyweights Corinthians and minnows Ceara. Both sides are at the opposite end of the table as we enter this game but both sides desperately need points for different reasons so we should see a passionate game between these two sides today.

With twelve games remaining in Serie A (for most of the sides), it’s time to stand up and be counted as to which part of the table each side wants to finish in. Corinthians are one of the title favourites so it’s no surprise that they’re in second place and are just three adrift of the league leaders with a game in hand. It may come as some surprise that their challengers for the Serie A title are currently Fluminense and Cruzeiro, however – I wouldn’t have expected either to be there at the start of the season so credit to them for that. It’s been largely contested between Corinthians and Fluminense with the two sides playing yo-yo of late but back-to-back games without a win for Corinthians has seen them fall away from Fluminense a little. Corinthians lost an epic game with Internacional 3-2 but then failed to overcome a potent but generally poor-travelling Botafogo side at home so morale isn’t as high as it could be currently. However, this is the ideal game for Corinthians to bounce back in because they’re facing what I would personally label as the worst side in Serie A – Ceara. Corinthians are always strong at home as their unmatched record of eleven wins in thirteen home games indicates all too well, particularly as they average scoring over two goals per game to boot! They’ve beaten the -1.5 goal handicap in six out of their last nine home wins so it’s not beyond them to do so against such a feeble opponent. If Gusmao was still at the helm of Ceara then I’d leave it but he’s not and they look a lot worse for it so I’m all over Corinthians like a rash tonight!

Little Ceara’s Serie A dream may just end in a nightmare with their new attacking tactics not working out at all. They’ve lost eight out of thirteen on the road this season because they’re the joint lowest-scoring side with Vasco da Gama and because their style has changed as they change managers like the weather! They’ve won just one game in their last eleven attempts and they’ve lost seven out of their last eight away from home, losing by two goals or more in their last three away defeats, the most recent of which was a 5-0 humiliation at out-of-form Avai. Ceara have failed to register a goal away from home for three consecutive games and against one of the finest defences in Serie A, I don’t see their misfortune changing tonight. Ceara had the opportune moment to get some points on the board as they hosted Atletico Mineiro last match, who traditionally don’t travel well, and they drew another blank in a 0-0 draw. Things are looking increasingly bleak for the newly-promoted outfit and Corinthians is not the away game to play in when things aren’t going your way as I expect Ceara to discover tonight. Their attacking tactics under their third manager of the season are not working at all well and yet they have no choice with relegation looming closer and closer following a barren run of form so Ceara have a lot of problems ahead of this game tonight.

Ultimately, there’s a massive class difference between these two sides and it really should show by the final whistle. Ceara are not good enough to get something here, in my humble opinion, so the question is how many Corinthians will score. They were a little poor against Botafogo for my liking but they were missing players so it’s partially understandable. However, Corinthians love their home games and they’ve got such a wealth of attacking talent available to them so I have to favour them to beat the handicap tonight against a very poor Ceara side.

Verdict: Corinthians to beat the -1.5 goal handicap at evens.

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Austria Vienna vs Sturm Graz – home win at evens.

I feel quite sorry for Sturm Graz. Whenever they think that they’re beginning to break apart the bigger trio of Austria Vienna, Rapid Vienna, and Salzburg by playing particularly well, they then go and lose to one of the afore-mentioned sides. In this particular instance, it was the reversal of this fixture last weekend that saw Sturm Graz yet again concede that they’re not as good as the other heavyweights in Austrian football as they lost 0-2 against Austria Vienna, who weren’t playing particularly well at the time. It’s becoming an all-too-familiar scenario for Sturm Graz, however, being brought down a peg or two by the better sides in the Bundesliga, unfortunately. They’re going to struggle today too with hosts Austria Vienna in such good form with wins at both Sturm Graz and bitter rivals Rapid Vienna leading into this game, not to mention their draw with reigning champions Salzburg. Austria Vienna are keeping clean sheets, most importantly, and that’s a big factor in my decision to back Austria Vienna today because Sturm Graz do not score enough goals in general, let alone away from home. Sturm Graz have lost three consecutive visits to Austria Vienna and haven’t scored in any of those games. In fact, Sturm Graz have failed to beat Austria Vienna in eight consecutive attempts at either ground so you know they’re going to have problems in this game. Austria Vienna should welcome back number one goalkeeper Linder for this one – it’s just a shame that Acimovic is still out with a long-term injury as Austria Vienna have missed his creativity this season. Nonetheless, striker Roland Linz is in great form since being signed from Gaziantepspor and Austria Vienna are beginning to deal with the loss of Acimovic so I fancy them to edge this one today against a partially demoralised and fairly impotent Sturm Graz at decent odds.

Verdict: Austria Vienna to win at evens.

Litex Lovech vs Cherno More Varna – to win to nil at evens.

Litex Lovech fucked me over in their last game so I hope they don’t do it again today!

New manager Penev has shown his intent with Litex Lovech by guiding them to strong defensive displays before working on their offensive ways. However, whichever way Penev is doing it, it’s starting to work and that’s the main thing! The only side to have scored against Litex Lovech in their last four games was title rivals CSKA Sofia in a 1-1 draw so you can see how tight their defence has become. They’ve not been scoring as many as they should have done but a comfortable 3-0 win at Rakovski last match will have eased goalscoring fears and it also gives Litex momentum to bring into this match. Litex have won three out of four at home this season with just one draw marring that record so you can see how strong they are even from early season form, particularly as they’ve only conceded two goals during those games. Although Litex are unquestionably missing Ivelin Popov since his departure, Penev is beginning to guide Litex forward without him and to his credit, it’s beginning to work, although there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Visitors Cherno More Varna will help Litex’s defensive cause today as they always line-up very defensively away from home. They’re a good enough side to make Litex work hard here and possibly even get a result but their problem is not being adventurous enough to try to and thus they tend to lose or draw most of their away games. They’ve lost their last two visits to Lovech without scoring and have only actually scored at Lovech in two out of their last seven games here. Cherno More Varna are sound defensively as their record of just three goals conceded in three away A PFG games this season indicates all too well. However, they’ve lost two of those games, which should tell you where their problem lies – goalscoring. Only newly-promoted Kaliakra have can match Varna’s dismal record of one goal scored in three away games and I really don’t see that changing today against a rejuvenated Litex Lovech.

With newly-promoted Rakovski being the only side that Cherno More Varna have scored against on the road this season, their offensive threat in this game doesn’t bother me; Litex should be able to deal with them rather easily. However, Varna are tough to play against because they’re hard to beat so Litex need their strikers to be taking their chances. If they go in front then Litex really should ease to victory here but they have to be incisive as Varna will seldom venture out of their own half. A goal should be enough to see Litex win this game and given their form of late, I think backing them to win without conceding at evens looks intriguing today.

Verdict: Litex Lovech to win to nil at evens.

Mainz 05 vs Hoffenheim – home win at 23/20.

The magnificent run of Mainz 05 just keeps going and going and I’ve no idea how long it’s going to last for! They’ve now won six out of six Bundesliga games and considering that their three away games during that run were at title contenders VfL Wolfsburg (despite trailing 3-0 at one point!), potent Werder Bremen (without conceding!), and reigning champions Bayern Munich, you can only be impressed with how well this side are playing. There was never any doubt over their defensive strength; they’ve shown enough of that over the past year or two. However, the additional potency that they’ve shown so far this season was not only unexpected but decidedly clinical in terms of the games that they’ve played in. They don’t have a recognised goalscorer in this side, per se – target man Rasmussen hasn’t played enough, Hungarian striker Szalai doesn’t score enough in general, and new signing Allagui from Greuther Furth has started well but he’s yet to prove on a consistent basis that he’s a Bundesliga player. However, emerging talent Schurrle in attack has really brightened Mainz 05 as a unit – talented youngsters can often galvanise a side in such a way (i.e. Lukaku at Anderlecht) and it’s working fabulously well for Mainz 05. I doubt they can last the season but they’re certainly a force to be reckoned with at the moment as they’re on top of the world mentally and momentum is favouring them massively. Mainz 05 are traditionally very strong at home and showed that on numerous occasions last year, not to mention this year. Mainz 05 did the double over Hoffenheim last season too so I don’t see why they can’t prolong their excellent run today.

Visitors Hoffenheim are a side that are worthy of your respect for their tenacity and clinical nature but they’re not good travellers. They lost eight out of seventeen on the road last season and wheras that record might not seem to condemning, if we consider that only six Bundesliga sides lost more away games than they did and that three of them finished as the bottom three in the table, you can see where I’m coming from. Hoffenheim are compact enough defensively to hold their own and you’ll rarely see them get battered on the road but the simple fact is that they don’t score enough goals away from home. They’re actually unbeaten in their three Bundesliga away games this season but two of their games were against newly-promoted sides and the other was against a fairly impotent and inferior Koln side so I don’t read too much into that. Bosnia-Herzegovina striker Ibisevic is a constant threat in attack for Hoffenheim, particularly when linking up well with fellow countryman Salihovic in midfield. We also shouldn’t overlook new Icelandic midfielder signing Sigurdsson from Reading as he can be a threat to goal and Demba Ba in attack is always a handful.

However, these names – barring Sigurdsson – are not new issues to Mainz 05. Mainz 05 have dealt with these players before and can do so again today as long as they take the lead in the game. It also helps that star playmaker Carlos Eduardo left Hoffenheim in summer for Russian reigning champions Rubin Kazan. Hoffenheim are a pain in the backside to take points off if they have a lead but if they fall behind then I thoroughly expect a Mainz 05 victory and the odds are good enough to take a chance on today.

Verdict: Mainz 05 to win at 23/20.

Zaglebie Lubin vs Cracovia Krakow – home win at 23/20.

Zaglebie Lubin have started to look a bit better of late, especially at home. They were a bit unfortunate prior to that to have not gained a good result but as ever, their finishing let them down. However, back-to-back home wins against fellow relegation battlers Arka Gdynia and giants Legia Warsaw gives them some momentum to take into today’s game. I’m not including their defeat at Jagiellonia Bialystok in this equation, incidentally, because that fixture is a write-off for most sides and I doubt Zaglebie viewed it otherwise. They know that their home games are their priority to stay in the Ekstraklasa and I expect to see that today.

Cracovia Krakow finally enter a game on the back of a win after their 2-0 win at weekend at home to relegation-threatened Arka Gdynia. It’s hardly the most groundbreaking result ever but Cracovia needed to get a foot on the ladder and they’ve done that. Cracovia miss Sacha and Sasin for this game and whereas I don’t believe either are integral to their play, a club like Cracovia is not big on the “depth” front so any loss is a loss, especially in difficult times like these. The return of Mierzejewski has done them the power of good in defence but let’s not overlook the fact that this side in the Ekstraklasa that currently averages conceding over two goals per game. Cracovia still have a lot of work to do to impress me and despite the likes of Slusarski and Matusiak being better strikers than their opponents have to offer, I doubt the ability of the players behind them to support them, particularly against a tricky opponent like Zaglebie.

Cracovia haven’t won at Zaglebie since 2004 and although Cracovia do have the attacking potential to change that statistic in the near future, they certainly don’t have the defence for it just yet. If Zaglebie take the lead here then I think they’ll have enough to hold Cracovia off but the odds on the home win are intriguing anyway as an inept Cracovia defence will surely gift many required chances to Zaglebie’s fairly ineffectual attack line!

Verdict: Zaglebie Lubin to win at 23/20.

Legia Warsaw vs Lechia Gdansk – lay Legia Warsaw at evens.

This is a bold call as Lechia Gdansk haven’t got a result (or even scored here) since the dawn of time! However, Lechia are a stubborn unit of a team that are hard to beat at the best of times and I’m banking on that an awful lot today as Legia are inconsistent as fuck! Lechia lost some big players in the summer, unfortunately, but their displays haven’t suffered as a result yet so I’m still encouraged enough to back them. Legia managed to somehow beat a far superior Lech Poznan last match with just ten men so they will bring momentum into this game. The problem is that I don’t believe they’re consistent enough to utilise that momentum, simply put. This is the kind of game they can easily fail to win because Lechia will not attack like them Lech did – they’ll defend deep and every time Legia has encountered that this season, they’ve struggled to score goals. Lechia have won three games leading into this one so confidence is high and with recent reports published in Poland about Lechia Gdansk actually being the best-off club in Poland currently following investigations into expenditure and income at all of the Ekstraklasa clubs, they may just have an additional motivational factor here today. Bruno Mezenga finally got his name on the scoresheet for Legia, which bodes ominously for the remainder of the Ekstraklasa season as he’s a damn good striker when he gets going. However, Legia do have problems with missing players ahead of this game as key defender Choto is injured and so is striker Chinyama so we’re unlikely to see them at their best, especially as captain Vrdoljak is also missing from midfield. Don’t get me wrong here – Legia are definitely good enough to win this game – I just find the odds on them to do so laughable because they’ve been anything but consistent and reliable in the Ekstraklasa thus far and this is the type of game they could very easily come unstuck in against a very well-organised Lechia Gdansk side.

Verdict: Lay Legia Warsaw at evens.

Arka Gdynia vs Polonia Warsaw – home win with draw no bet at evens.

It’s all doom and gloom in the Polonia Warsaw camp following the bizarre sacking of Bakero. He did such a good job yet a couple of defeats and their chairman Wojciechowski sacked him controversially and replaced him with Janas, who is yet to show he can do the job. They’ve looked quite poor since Bakero left, understandably, although it’s fair to say that Polonia Warsaw were robbed last match at home against Polonia Bytom as the second goal for Bytom was scored via handball. Polonia Warsaw now haven’t won in three consecutive Ekstraklasa games and the pressure is already mounting on new managers Janas. It doesn’t help that star striker Artur Sobiech totally lost control lately and the club has suspended him for two games. They’re also missing defenders Mynar and Brzyski, which are hefty losses, particularly for a tough game at Arka so I think Polonia’s problems may be prolonged today. Arka Gdynia are not a good side but they’re a terrible side to face away from home because they’re tight defensively and will fight for everything. No side has won at Arka this season with Arka beating both Gornik Zabrze and Jagiellonia Bialystok in two out of their three home games, drawing the other game 1-1 with Widzew Lodz. Their football is far more effective at home as they’re a physial side and their fans give them great support. Polonia haven’t won at Arka for two consecutive visits now and I don’t see that changing today, especially not with Sobiech missing. Arka will frankly kick the shit out of Polonia on their quagmire of a pitch in Gdynia and I genuinely think they can get something here. Let’s face it – every game for Arka nowadays is life-or-death whereas Polonia don’t really know where they’re heading although they’d love to be at the top of the table! The only player that Arka are missing of any consequence is defender Szmatiuk but they should still present a strong and united from against an unconvincing Polonia Warsaw side so my call is the home win with draw no bet here today.

Verdict: Arka Gdynia to win with draw no bet at evens.

Valencia CF vs Athletic Club de Bilbao – home win at 7/10.

Valencia haven’t had the best of records against Athletic in recent years because Athletic play a physical game that Valencia hate, not to mention the fact that the Mestalla suits Bilbao because it’s on the compact side and Bilbao love to pack their midfield. However, there is one factor here that has me backing the hell out of Valencia and that’s because Amorebieta is suspended for Bilbao. For a change, the suspension isn’t merited for the Bilbao nutcase as he walked against Barcelona for a fairly rash challenge but not a dangerous one – no more than a yellow card in my eyes. Nonetheless, this leaves the unfamiliar duo of Ocio and San Jose in defence. Ocio is a good defender but he’s spent a long time on the sidelines and age is catching up with him whereas San Jose is going to be a good defender but he’s not there yet. Couple that information with emerging talent Aurtenetxe likely to start at left-back and we have a potential disaster at the back for Bilbao today. Caparros has recalled Balenziaga for the trip east so he may field him ahead of the youngster or else this Bilbao defence could really be caught short by some talented Valencia attackers. Pablo Hernandez will give Aurtenetxe a thorough examination in this game and if he plays like he did mid-week against Manchester United then they’ll have a lot of joy. Iraola can’t get forward as much because of Mata on the other side, which will hinder Bilbao’s game. Ocio will be able to prevent Soldado in the air but if I was Unai Emery, I’d have to pick Aduriz ahead of Soldado because his pace and finesse can cause a lot of problems for Bilbao, not to mention the fact that he’s played for them twice so he knows this defence pretty well! With no Amorebieta to hold this defence together, however, I’m almost certain that Bilbao will capitulate in this game when they inevitably fall behind and they could lose this game alarmingly easily. Bilbao have a nasty habit of either having a man sent off or conceding heavily in a short space of time whenever they fall behind and I have a sneaking suspicion that this may happen today.

Caparros has still taken a strong line-up to Valencia for this game and the inclusion if youngster Ibai Gomez interests me as he’s supposed to be a real talent on the wing. I doubt we’ll see much of him however! Llorente can’t possibly have the same service as normal as the full-backs are going to have to stay back for Bilbao so I don’t think they’ll be anywhere near as effective in attack although pacey Igor Martinez will undoubtedly cause a few problems if fielded, although I’m not sure if he will as Toquero has returned from injury and has been named in the squad. I think Bilbao are coming here for the draw as opposed to their usual attacking tactics against Valencia and I don’t blame them as they could be on the receiving end of a beating here if they’re not careful. Valencia lack penetration in the final third but they should be able to register at least one goal today and that really should be enough to see them win the game. Amorebieta missing = suicidal Bilbao and therefore the odds are something of a gift here if Aduriz starts for the hosts.

Verdict: Valencia CF to win at 7/10.
